Ballreich The famous Marcelled chips It was 1920 in Tiffin, Ohio when Fred Ballreich and his wife, Ethel, opened their homemade potato chip operation in a dirt floor garage, using a copper kettle heated with wood scraps. It was an all day process that produced only 14 pounds of potato chips. Ballreichs
chose to call their potato chips marcelled which means wavy taken from the popular ladies wavy hairstyle of the 1920s. The quality of Ballreichs Potato Chips created a huge demand that couldnt be met by a husband and wife operation, so Fred contacted his brother, Carl Ballreich. With the combination of Freds sales and baking skills along with Carls strong work ethic and management skills, the company was well on its way to success. Carls wife, Emma, and Freds wife, Ethel, worked hard peeling, sacking, and packing. Both couples lived side by side at 180 & 186 Ohio Avenue in Tiffin, Ohio. Eventually a small factory was built behind their homes. With the addition of warehouses, new equipment and processing plants the local company continued its rapid growth producing everything from pretzels to corn puffs! Rudolph Foods Pork Rinds and Morei Rudolph Foods is a Lima, Ohio-based producer of snack food, in particular pork rinds and cracklins. The company has six
facilities in the United States and three international ventures; it was founded in 1955, by John Rudolph. The home of the corporate offices, main pellet production facility, and a packaging facility is in Lima. The town claims the name of Pork Rind Capital of the World and is the center of the operation. Throughout the years, the complex has changed and expanded to grow with the company.
However, one thing remains the same Mrs. Rudolphs secret recipe, which is why they can say, Nobody makes better tasting pork rinds! When John Rudolph first started the business in 1955, he bought rinds already smoked, on the bacon, as they had been for decades. But just two years later, the meat industry stopped smoking the rind on bacon, and the Rudolphs were met with a challenge. So, putting her home economics background to work, Mrs. Rudolph created the perfect pork rind. From there, her sure-fire recipe and her husbands leadership they created the snack industry success story that is Rudolph Foods, the worlds largest producer of pork rinds. Frito-Lay The King of Corn Chips In 1932, C.E. Doolin entered a small San Antonio cafe and purchased a bag of corn chips. He then bought the recipe from the manufacturer and began to sell FRITOS Corn Chips from his Model T Ford. That same year, Herman W. Lay began his potato chip
ence from Tulane University and serving in the Armed Forces during World War II, he returned to San Antonio, Texas in 1945 and began a career in the food industry. Pace began his own food business of bottled syrups, as well as jellies and jams, and all were made, packed and shipped out of a small space in the back of a liquor store. In 1947 he decided the real syrup of the Southwest was Mexican sauce - which is now known as salsa. Pace pursued his new idea passionately and urgently. Starting with a basic recipe, he dove into experimentation with different blends of ingredients, testing the results on his golf buddies, before settling on the winning mix of jalapenos, onions and tomatoes. He named his creation picante sauce - Spanish for piquant, meaning flavorful or spicy. Whats a party without great casual food to nibble on? Odds & Ends Nothing like a good home renovation project to jump start your juices. In a decision I can only chalk up to temporary insanity, I decided to tackle several home repair projects all at once, the result of which involved a weekend move of everything from the upstairs of my home. As if hoisting the furnishings up and down steps werent taxing enough, I today face the unenviable task of sorting through the leftover remnants of clutter, to assess if there were anything of value (sentimental or otherwise) before heading to the
dumpster. Ever the multi-tasker, I looked upon the chaos and pondered, What possible connection can I make of word origins and the miscellaneous junk now cluttering my floors? Then it hit me! Odds and ends! One might not think of odds and ends as a matter of home repair, but truth be told, the origin of the phase did begin with construction. While the original odds and ends had nothing to do with the odd gloves, files and paper clips now staring me in the face, they did have to do with building, as odds and
from the Mid West or Canada, but I digress.) Think jockey, and you think horse riders and for good reason. Linguists tells us term jockey was a derivative of the generic name Jack (a.k.a. their version of John Doe), which was the nickname given those farm hands who worked with horses. By the mid-17th century, these jacks (think jack of all trades) evolved to jockeys, covering a wider range of horse-whisperin professionals, including carriage drivers and race trainers. The first jockey boxes were small locked containers found under the drivers seat, used to store tools or other personal belongings. As cars replaced horses, glove box replaced jockey box as the term of choice for that same space found in cars today, used for more or less the same. And that, as Paul Harvey would say, is the rest of the story!
Nearing retirement?
As we say goodbye to 2012 and prepare for the New Year, resolutions come to end. While everyone can benefit from a year-end financial health check-up, if youre in the final stages of your career now is a good time to make sure you have your affairs in order. Consider adding these resolutions to your list to help ensure a smooth transition from the workplace to retirement. Review your monthly expenses and budget. By JoAn It is useful to know exactly what you spend each month and create a budget that makes sense for your long-term needs. Examine what is costs to cover the es-

Upon retirement, one of the best moves you can make is to replace the paycheck you used to receive on a regular schedule so you have a predictable amount of income every month. To do so, you will want to carefully examine your retirement account balances, your lifestyle needs and wants and any additional major financial changes on your horizon (proceeds from the sale of a home, for example). The process might seem complicated, especially if you want to structure your withdrawal in the most strategic and efficient way. A financial advisor and tax professional are two great resources to turn to for help and advice. With expert input, you can create a plan for your retirement years and rely on this road map to help alleviate stress that might come with managing a fixed income. If youre nervous about your retirement accounts and invested assets, meet with a financial advisor and review your portfolio. Perhaps your investments fluctuated during the recession. Maybe its time to reallocate assets to a stable set of funds that wont waver widely with the market. Either way, knowing exactly where you stand will help you sleep peacefully each night. A financial advisor can help evaluate how your assets are allocated and make investment suggestions that can help offer a level of growth, income or preservation thats right for you. If its your habit to watch the 24/7 financial news networks do yourself a favor and find a new hobby as you enter retirement. A steady stream of economic news puts many people on red alert status. The constant swings of the market can even cloud good judgement and prompt you to make sudden changes to your investment strategy. Its just not healthy. When you retire, try to adopt and maintain a steady as she goes philosophy. Making risky investments, buying or selling property or withdrawing all of your money from liquid investments may seem like a good idea today, but might cost you financial security in the long run. Instead focus on stabilizing your financial situation. Consider developing a retirement network of friends and family members with whom you can talk candidly about financial decisions. This network will help you through anxieties and keep you on solid footing when it comes to financial decision making. If you dont already have a will, resolve to get one in the New Year. If you have one in place, make sure it reflects your current wishes and double check your beneficiary designations. Also set aside time to discuss your plans with your spouse or significant other as well as your children - and tell those closest to you where they can find your important documents. These can be difficult conversations for everyone involved, but they will help reduce the amount of stress you and your family may face in the future. Developing a good relationship with a financial advisor - and staying in touch with him or her during these crucial years - should also be a part of your retirement plan, a financial advisor will help keep you on the right path to ensure your years of retirement meet your expectations.
