Despised producer creates TV idol

By Paul Niemann George Washington Trendle was born on the Fourth of July in 1884. You probably dont recognize his name, but youve seen his most important contribution to society. He was a writer and producer who brought us one of the Wests most popular characters. George is not the lone producer to be featured in this column; a few years ago we introduced you to Ian Fleming, who created the James Bond character. No one would ever accuse George of having a heart of gold or even a heart of silver; in fact, he was a ruthless business owner. He created a show around his character in order for his WXYZ radio station to compete with the other stations in the Detroit area. His show began in 1933 during the golden age of radio, in the thrilling days of yesteryear. George was known for his refusal to pay his employees a fair salary. Despite large royalties flowing in from sales of the radio shows spin-off products, including a weekly TV show, books, movies and merchandise, the writers and actors never received a dime of any royalty money. In fact, George Trendle was such a skinflint that he hired many of his employees for no wages, promising them that they would someday get paid when things got better. Even the writer who created the character, Fran Striker, was refused any royalties and had to scrape by on the meager salary that George paid him. In a move that would make Scrooge jealous, George fired 26 of his employees on Christmas Day in 1936. Why would his employees tolerate all of Georges mistreatment? Because it was during the Great Depression, when people would take and hold onto any job they could find. So what character did George Trendle produce? Now that you know the background of the owner, lets Scout out the facts so we can unmask this mystery. The radio show was adapted for TV in 1949 and the series ran until 1957. It was made into a movie in 1981. The main characters name was John Reid, but thats not much of a hint because his name was never revealed in the show, just like the fact that no one ever called Gilligan by his first name. Or MacGyver, for that matter. In fact, none of the other characters on the show even knew John Reids name. His brother, along with four other law enforcement colleagues, were shot and killed by the evil Cavendish gang. John Reid was the only one to survive. He was found by an Indian friend and nursed back to health in a nearby cave (there always seems to be a cave nearby in these Western shows when you need one). His friend became one of the stars of the show, along with their horses. John Reid was The Lone Ranger. Now that you know the mystery behind George Trendles idol, the answer could be found in the clues given above: The lone producer, a heart of Silver (Silver was the name of his horse), the thrilling days of yesteryear, lets Scout out the facts (Scout was the name of Tontos horse), and so we can unmask this mystery. The Lone Ranger and his loyal friend Tonto recognized each other because the Lone Ranger saved Tontos life after his family was killed when Tonto was a boy. As the Lone Ranger was recovering from being shot, Tonto dug six graves in order to mislead the Cavendish gang into thinking that all six rangers had died. He wore a mask to hide his identity from the Cavendish gang, and he made his mask out of his deceased brothers vest. (As a side note about Trendles penny pinching - Trendle specified the music on his shows should be non-copyrighted classical so the music was royalty-free. This is the reason that the William Tell Overture was adopted as the Lone Ranger theme and The Flight of the Bumble Bee became the theme for the Green Hornet show ( another of Trendles creations). In case youre still trying to figure out what Gilligans first name was, it was Willie. And MacGyvers first name, which was revealed in a dream on the show, was Angus.
In 1936, The Green Hornet was added to the roster of WXYZ programs under George Trendl. The Green Hornet was a modern day masked crime fighter, named Britt Reid and was descended from the Lone Rangers nephew Dan Reid. He was assisted by his Japanese valet Kato,(changed to Filipino after Pearl Harbor), who used martial arts.

Fighting the Shopposition

I just returned from a shopping trip with my husband. Let me tell you, Id rather stick a thousand needles in my eye than go shopping, especially with my husband, and he would rather do the same. But the recent Christmas season, and our busy schedules (aka our proclivity to procrastinate) compelled us to grab our coupons and sales flyers, gas up the van, put our names on the churchs prayer list and take off together for the Great American Mall Adventure. Let it be known that I am not the stereotypical female shopper. I do not shop recreationally. When my girlfriends and I find ourselves at a mall, I usually end up in a nearby bookstore, reading (and possibly napping) in a corner chair with a stack of potential buys in my lap. While I do love a bargain, and I enjoy finding the perfect gift for someone, I am basically a random, drive-by shopper who puts very little planning into my efforts. Long forays in while he ran in to JCPenneys, grabbed the first thing he saw in the ladies department, threw it on the counter along with some cash and dashed back out to the car. Happy Birthday! he said, with a look of triumph on his face. It was a hideous plaid dress, three sizes too big. Knowing what a big step he had just taken, I couldnt be too upset. But I did return the dress. While we have both increased our shopping stamina somewhat over the years, the two of us on a shopping excursion remains a losing combination. Its bad enough on the rare occasion when we get groceries together (I admit: I only have him come along when Im tired and dont want to carry all those bags to and from my vehicle. I accept that my bill will be twice as big, the junk food twice as numerous and the trip twice as long). But put us in a mall together and its a battle of the brainsthe easily distracted kind. We went for DVDs, a pair of jeans, a set of towels and a

Ballreich The famous Marcelled chips It was 1920 in Tiffin, Ohio when Fred Ballreich and his wife, Ethel, opened their homemade potato chip operation in a dirt floor garage, using a copper kettle heated with wood scraps. It was an all day process that produced only 14 pounds of potato chips. Ballreichs

chose to call their potato chips marcelled which means wavy taken from the popular ladies wavy hairstyle of the 1920s. The quality of Ballreichs Potato Chips created a huge demand that couldnt be met by a husband and wife operation, so Fred contacted his brother, Carl Ballreich. With the combination of Freds sales and baking skills along with Carls strong work ethic and management skills, the company was well on its way to success. Carls wife, Emma, and Freds wife, Ethel, worked hard peeling, sacking, and packing. Both couples lived side by side at 180 & 186 Ohio Avenue in Tiffin, Ohio. Eventually a small factory was built behind their homes. With the addition of warehouses, new equipment and processing plants the local company continued its rapid growth producing everything from pretzels to corn puffs! Rudolph Foods Pork Rinds and Morei Rudolph Foods is a Lima, Ohio-based producer of snack food, in particular pork rinds and cracklins. The company has six

facilities in the United States and three international ventures; it was founded in 1955, by John Rudolph. The home of the corporate offices, main pellet production facility, and a packaging facility is in Lima. The town claims the name of Pork Rind Capital of the World and is the center of the operation. Throughout the years, the complex has changed and expanded to grow with the company.

However, one thing remains the same Mrs. Rudolphs secret recipe, which is why they can say, Nobody makes better tasting pork rinds! When John Rudolph first started the business in 1955, he bought rinds already smoked, on the bacon, as they had been for decades. But just two years later, the meat industry stopped smoking the rind on bacon, and the Rudolphs were met with a challenge. So, putting her home economics background to work, Mrs. Rudolph created the perfect pork rind. From there, her sure-fire recipe and her husbands leadership they created the snack industry success story that is Rudolph Foods, the worlds largest producer of pork rinds. Frito-Lay The King of Corn Chips In 1932, C.E. Doolin entered a small San Antonio cafe and purchased a bag of corn chips. He then bought the recipe from the manufacturer and began to sell FRITOS Corn Chips from his Model T Ford. That same year, Herman W. Lay began his potato chip

Pace began his own food business of bottled syrups, as well as jellies and jams, and all were made, packed and shipped out of a small space in the back of a liquor store. In 1947 he decided the real syrup of the Southwest was Mexican sauce - which is now known as salsa. Pace pursued his new idea passionately and urgently. Starting with a basic recipe, he dove into experimentation with different blends of ingredients, testing the results on his golf buddies, before settling on the winning mix of jalapenos, onions and tomatoes. He named his creation picante sauce - Spanish for piquant, meaning flavorful or spicy. Whats a party without great casual food to nibble on? ODDS & ENDS AND THE GLOVE BOX

ends were, in their original context, created from lumber mills of old. The first odds were pieces of wood split irregularly by sawmills, worthless to the project at hand, but sold as remnants in large piles or bins. Ends were (as the name suggests) end pieces trimmed from boards that had been ordered to specified lengths. Dishonest merchants were said to have sold their odds and ends by re-adding the inches of the scraps to the total footage count. But whether sold as bit pieces, or added back to the builders tab dishonestly, the first odds and ends did have some perceived value, (which is more than I can say for the heaps in my hallway). Glove Box Why do we call that space in our cars dash, a glove box (or glove compartment) And have you ever heard the same referred to as a jockey box? Short answer: yes! Now heres the scoop For starters, that the box held gloves makes sense, but jockey? (Youve either got a very short driver, or a different form of garment being stashed all together. Those of you thinking of the same joke I am, please refrain.) A glovebox is, as the phrase suggests, a compartment where once, early drivers stored their gloves. But before you say duh you might find it interesting to note that in the earliest automobiles, gloves were necessary equipment. Why? Well, believe it or not, the first big consumer complaint of Henry Fords horseless buggy was the freeze factor as the first cars were not fully enclosed and those up front got cold fingers and noses. But jockey box? (For starters, call it that and Ill know youre not from heremore likely

As if hoisting the furnishings up and down steps werent taxing enough, I today face the unenviable task of sorting through the leftover remnants of clutter, to assess if there were anything of value (sentimental or otherwise) before heading to the

Odds and ends! One might not think of odds and ends as a matter of home repair, but truth be told, the origin of the phase did begin with construction. While the original odds and ends had nothing to do with the odd gloves, files and paper clips now staring me in the face, they did have to do with building, as odds and

from the Mid West or Canada, but I digress.) Think jockey, and you think horse riders and for good reason. Linguists tells us term jockey was a derivative of the generic name Jack (a.k.a. their version of John Doe), which was the nickname given those farm hands who worked with horses. By the mid-17th century, these jacks (think jack of all trades) evolved to jockeys, covering a wider range of horse-whisperin professionals, including carriage drivers and race trainers. The first jockey boxes were small locked containers found under the drivers seat, used to store tools or other personal belongings. As cars replaced horses, glove box replaced jockey box as the term of choice for that same space found in cars today, used for more or less the same. And that, as Paul Harvey would say, is the rest of the story!

Nearing retirement?
As we say goodbye to 2012 and prepare for the New Year, resolutions come to end. While everyone can benefit from a year-end financial health check-up, if youre in the final stages of your career now is a good time to make sure you have your affairs in order. Consider adding these resolutions to your list to help ensure a smooth transition from the workplace to retirement. Review your monthly expenses and budget. Upon retirement, one of the best moves you can make is to replace the paycheck you used to receive on a regular schedule so you have a predictable amount of income every month. To do so, you will want to carefully examine your retirement account balances, your lifestyle needs and wants and any additional major financial changes on your horizon (proceeds from the sale of a home, for example). The process might seem complicated, especially if you want to structure your withdrawal in the most strategic and efficient way. A financial advisor and tax professional are two great resources to turn to for help and advice. With expert input, you can create a plan for your retirement years and rely on this road map to help alleviate stress that might come with managing a fixed income. If youre nervous about your retirement accounts and invested assets, meet with a financial advisor and review your portfolio. Perhaps your investments fluctuated during the recession. Maybe its time to reallocate assets to a stable set of funds that wont waver widely with the market. Either way, knowing exactly where you stand will help you sleep peacefully each night. A financial advisor can help evaluate how your assets are allocated and make investment suggestions that can help offer a level of growth, income or preservation thats right for you. If its your habit to watch the 24/7 financial news networks do yourself a favor and find a new hobby as you enter retirement. A steady stream of economic news puts many people on red alert status. The constant swings of the market can even cloud good judgement and prompt you to make sudden changes to your investment strategy. Its just not healthy. When you retire, try to adopt and maintain a steady as she goes philosophy. Making risky investments, buying or selling property or withdrawing all of your money from liquid investments may seem like a good idea today, but might cost you financial security in the long run. Instead focus on stabilizing your financial situation. Consider developing a retirement network of friends and family members with whom you can talk candidly about financial decisions. This network will help you through anxieties and keep you on solid footing when it comes to financial decision making. If you dont already have a will, resolve to get one in the New Year. If you have one in place, make sure it reflects your current wishes and double check your beneficiary designations. Also set aside time to discuss your plans with your spouse or significant other as well as your children - and tell those closest to you where they can find your important documents. These can be difficult conversations for everyone involved, but they will help reduce the amount of stress you and your family may face in the future. Developing a good relationship with a financial advisor - and staying in touch with him or her during these crucial years - should also be a part of your retirement plan, a financial advisor will help keep you on the right path to ensure your years of retirement meet your expectations.
