SESSION 7
ELIGIONS HAVE EXISTED across all time and locations. Nearly every people group has some set of beliefs that guides their thinking about the afterlife. The beliefs are as varied as the people that believe them. The one commonaliy between them all is the fact that we humans must do something to appease the wrath of the gods. There is always a list of things we are to do, and in many cases a list of things not to do. In the end, you add it all up and hope the good you have done outweighs the bad. That in a nutshell is religion. But the gospel is something completely different. This week, we will see that God provides a way for acceptance through Jesus Christ. How? Through Jesus living up to the righteous standard God requires of humanity. By obeying Gods Word, Jesus reversed the curse that sin has brought upon Gods people and His creation. Unlike Adam in the garden and Israel in the wilderness, Jesus proved Himself to be the faithful Son who obeys Gods Word.

AFFIRMED
Luke 3:21-22 When all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized. As He was praying, heaven opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in a physical appearance like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: You are My beloved Son. I take delight in You! IMAGINE THE SCENE THAT DAY . Jesus is making his way to the Jordan River where John the Baptist has been baptizing people . John spots Jesus approaching and declares, Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1:29) . The people must have been amazed at such a declaration . However, their amazement is only heightened as Jesus enters the Jordans waters and is baptized and God Himself declares, You are My beloved Son . I take delight in You! (Luke 3:22) . This scene is amazing! There are many incredible things happening in this text . We see the Triune God on full display: the Son is being baptized, the Father declares His pleasure, and the Spirit descends to rest upon the Son . We also see the inauguration of Jesus earthly ministry with this event . But perhaps the greatest thing we see in this text is God the Fathers verbal affirmation of Jesus qualifications to fulfill the righteous requirements that expected of us . This is great news for us . Jesus was the unique Son of God . He was fully God and fully man . As fully God, he alone was able to come and be the sinless Savior for man . As fully man, he alone was able to pay the debt that humanity owed to God . When the time had come for Jesus to begin his earthly ministry, and make his first step toward the cross in Jerusalem, God the Father declares His approval of His Sons worthiness for the task . Because of this we rejoice! For as God is satisfied with His Son, He is also satisfied with all who are found with faith in His Son .

PROPHECIES FULFILLED
Luke 4:40-41 When the sun was setting, all those who had anyone sick with various diseases brought them to Him. As He laid His hands on each one of them, He would heal them. Also, demons were coming out of many, shouting and saying, You are the Son of God! But He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew He was the Messiah. HOW DO WE KNOW if Jesus is the one who can save us? Is there a way to judge if Jesus was the expected Savior? To prove He was who He said He was? Jesus anticipated and answered questions like these . On one occasion, Jesus went to his hometown of Nazareth on the Sabbath Day and went to the synagogue to preach . Upon arrival He is given a scroll of the prophet Isaiah . He opens it to Isaiah 61 and reads the first two verses and then declares to them, Today as you listen, this Scripture has been fulfilled . (Luke 4:21) . What did he mean by this? He meant that He was the one doing the things that passage predicted the Messiah would do . He was the anointed proclaimer of Good News . He was the healer of the sick, blind, and lame . Jesus came to fulfill the Word of God . He came to do all that Gods Holy Word commanded, and in doing so, He proved He was the One all history had been pointing to and waiting for . What is the aim and intent of Jesus fulfilling of the Word of God? To bring forth restoration to the fallen race of Adam and to make all things new (Rev . 21:5) . Jesus came to bring forth the Kingdom of God . In the bringing forth of the kingdom, He is inaugurating a new reality . When sin entered the Garden, creation became broken . He is reversing the effects of the fall, both in the descendants of Adam and the creation . His obedience to those written prophecies show that he alone has the authority to bring forth this new reality, and He expects us and enables us to take part in this new reality .

God has provided a way for us to be accepted by Him. How? Through Jesus living up to the righteous standard God requires of humanity. By obeying Gods Word, Jesus reversed the curse that sin has brought upon Gods people and His creation.
Be Our Righteousness.
Religion is about what you must do in order to be accepted before God; Christianity is about what God has done for you in order to accept you.
We all want to be accepted. Whether
its from our parents, friends at school, or even strangers, we all want to be accepted and affirmed. Have you ever considered how many of your actions and desires are impacted by seeking the affirmation and acceptance of others? Where are you most motivated by others acceptance and affirmation? What are some things you do that is motivated by affirmation?
The Bible tells us that our sin makes us unacceptable. If even our best deeds are in vain, is there any hope of being accepted and affirmed by God? How do people try to overcome the fear of not measuring up to Gods standard? To the standard of people around them?
Do you struggle with believing the Father has accepted you in Christ? How does understanding the message of Christianity, the gospel, liberate people from bondage to sin?
Succeed Where Wehim, which made us Failed. When Adam sinned against God, we sinned with
guilty and unacceptable before a holy God (Rom. 5:12,18-19). In our individualist society, it is difficult for people to understand how one persons sin can affect other people. Why is it important that we maintain the biblical teaching that Adams sin is passed down to us? What evidence of this do we see in our own lives?
up to his old tricks of distorting Gods Word and deceiving us into thinking it says something other than what God has spoken. Can you think of other examples when Gods Word has been misused to justify sin? Have you ever been confused about Gods Word and what God desires of us? How did the Holy Spirit correct your false thinking?
What Old Testament book did Jesus quote from? What is the context of the verses Jesus quoted, and what do you think His quotes indicated for people in His day? What does that teach us about fighting sin and temptation?
awful effects all around us, including in our own bodies that waste away due to age and disease. To what do unbelieving people attribute all the evil, chaos, and disorder in our world? What does the Bible say is the source of the evil in our world? What do unbelievers think will put an end to the chaos and evil around us? What does the Bible say will put an end to the chaos and evil around us?
Conclusion
Though in and of ourselves we are unacceptable to God, in Christ we are not only acceptable to God but He affirms us, calling us His sons and daughters and sending us out to accomplish His mission. Do you believe that you are accepted by God through Christ and that God has affirmed you as His child because of Christ? Are you being obedient as Gods child in fulfilling Gods mission? What are some ways you can join Gods mission to proclaim freedom to those who are under sins curse?
ENCORE
This is the good news of the gospel. The Father accepts Jesus obedience on behalf of those who put their trust in Christ. We are unacceptable before a holy God, but Jesus is acceptable, and God affirms Jesus because He pleased the Father (Luke 3:22). By faith in Jesus Christ, we are acceptable to God and receive the same affirmation. The words the Father uttered over Jesus at His baptism (You are My beloved Son. I take delight in You!) are true of us as well. 3. RESTORE CREATION (LUKE 4:40-41; CF. 4:16-21,31-39). Because of sin, Gods good creation has been infiltrated by all kinds of evil: disease, death, chaos, and poverty. Sin has tarnished Gods good creation, leaving its awful effects all around us, including in our own bodies that waste away due to age and disease. As Gods Messiah, Jesus not only fulfilled all righteousness by identifying with humanity and obeying where weve failed, but He also announced the good news of Gods kingdom (Luke 4:4244). Jesus arrival marked the beginning of the kingdom of God, the rule of God where the effects of sin on creation were to be halted and reversed and Gods people were to be liberated from sins hold on them. Since Jesus was the Messiah, anointed by Gods Spirit to accomplish Gods mission, Jesus had authority over all creation (5:1-10; 8:22-25). Jesus displayed this authority when He liberated people from physical bondage by healing their diseases (4:38-40) and from spiritual bondage by casting out their demons (vv. 41-44). As we await the return of Christ, the Father is placing every enemy under Jesus feet (Eph. 1:22). After Jesus has defeated all His enemies, including death, He will deliver the kingdom to the Father, and we will enter into Gods final rest, where we will finally be free from sin and disease and death (1 Cor. 15:24-28). CONCLUSION Jesus fulfilled the righteousness God requires of humanity by identifying with Gods previous sinful human representatives (Adam and Israel) and reenacting their lives at the very points they failed. Christs obedience began to reverse the effects of sin unleashed upon Gods people and the created world. Jesus was uniquely qualified to fulfill Gods mission because He was the Lords anointed, the Messiah-Christ. As those who are accepted by God through Christ, we too have been empowered by the Holy Spirit for mission and ministry. The Bible declares that we are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His possession (1 Pet. 2:9). In other words, though in and of ourselves we are unacceptable to God, in Christ we are not only acceptable to God but God affirms us, calling us His sons and daughters and sending us out to accomplish His missionto proclaim the praises of the One who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Now Jesus is working through us, in the power of the Holy Spirit, to continue telling the world that He alone is God and the only pathway to the Father. As we proclaim this good news of Gods kingdom, we will see people liberated from bondage to sin.
