CIVS 2012 WORKCAMP PROGRAMME

Centre for International Voluntary Service (CIVS Kenya) is a Kenyan based non-profit organisation which works towards creating and preserving international peace, justice and human solidarity for people and their communities. Through a range of working projects in Kenya, CIVS provides volunteers with opportunities to work together with people from around the globe and in partnership with local groups to enhance local develpoment. Our short term voluntary projects are aimed at enabling the youth and womens projects by empowering and promoting the development activities that these two groups are involved in, in order to mobilize their participation in the wider society. These projects are also aimed at providing an avenue where the local people can be able to come up with ideas that will stimulate the developement process of the local community. Since its inception, for almost two decades, CIVS has evolved to better meet the needs and aspirations of a rapidly changing Kenyan society and to interact with the global community. The principal objective of our workcamps is to champion the empowerment of young people to ensure their full participation as equal and valuable partners in community and national development processes. Please feel free to send us any details of enquiries you may have concerning our projects, and may our working co-operation flourish to greater heights of prosperity.

Project Name: Enfants De Mabera Project Location: Kuria, Nyanza Province of Kenya Project dates: 3rd 21st June 2012 Project overview The Bogambero Children Reception Centre project (BCRC) aims at setting up a reception centre for the children who are living in the Bogambero Primary School area. (750 children). This community is located in a highly HIV virus infected area. Female Genital Mutilations (FGM), girls' education and early marriages are also serious issues that affect this community. Project Name: Biogardening Innovations Project Location: Western Province of Kenya Project dates: 4th 22nd November 2012 Project overview Bio gardening innovations is a community based organization (CBO), based in North Bunyore of Emuhaya District. It was established in early 2009 by 2 project officers and 30 model farmers who had been introduced to organic farming and wanted to pursue it in order to share new techniques, market farm produce and link up with other development stakeholders. This was to scale up farm based enterprises. The target beneficiaries are smallholder producers who want to diversify their sources of livelihoods from farm based entities. They are often faced by uncertainties in marketing and changes in weather patterns that render them vulnerable to low income and household food insecurity. This organization mobilizes such farmers into working groups in order to explore local resources like indigenous seeds, small livestock and natural soil fertility through organic farming for development. Farmers develop their gardens based on a broader vision that ensures maximum utilization of small land while conserving the natural environment and agro ecosystem. Workcamp Activities The volunteers will be responsible for facilitation of learning programs at the garden centre, establishment of structures at the garden centre, community outreach for agricultural extension, marketing and development, and mapping out fragile ecosystems in the community for conservation and protection.
