4 Reading Section This text is for questions 16 19 The Slippers of Buffalo Skin Once, in a time long past, there were a pair of slippers made of buffalo skin belonging to a prince. When the prince took them off, he put them on a rack in the kitchen, where the kitchen mice stared at them hour after hour, for they wished to eat them. These were no common slippers, since they had the power of speech, and they spoke to one another exactly like husband and wife. One day the Husband Slipper said to his spouse, Wife, if the mice stare at us this way, day and night, in the end we are going to be devoured by them. What do you think? Could we perhaps change ourselves into mice? The wife only replied, As you wish, Husband. The Husband Slipper sent up a prayer to the Almighty for them to become mice, and at once their prayer was heard and their wish granted. As mice, however, they discovered that their slightest movement caught the attention of the cats, which made them feel very unsafe, and so they asked to become cats. This request too was granted them; but as cats, hardly had they set their paws outside the house when they were set upon by dogs. They therefore sent up an entreaty to become dogs, and as before, they were granted their wish. When the newly created dogs came in the vicinity of men and women who were stamping rice, they were immediately beaten with the rice stampers and chased away. They decided then that it would be more advantageous to become human beings, and this too they were allowed to become. They were then called upon by the village chief to perform a variety of tasks for him, among others, to carry heavy loads of rocks. Their dissatisfaction increasing, they asked to become courtiers; and the very next moment they were courtiers, in which capacity they had to carry out the commands of the Prince, night and day. They were even awakened from a deep sleep to perform some duty or other for His Majesty. Of course the courtiers now felt how convenient it would be to become Prince and Princess, for then there would be no one over them to issue commands and this too they became. But they were not at peace, for a Prince from another principality attacked their princedom, and they were continually surrounded by enemies. More concerned than ever, the Slipper Prince said to his wife, My fear is great that we will be defeated, and if, we are, we will be imprisoned and ordered to cut grass for the horses. What shall we do? If I could become God, we would have no enemies, and we would be all-powerful. And the wife replied, as always, As you wish, Husband! But that was the limit. At the very moment that the Husband asked to become God, both he and his wife became slippers again, back in the kitchen, on the rack, as when their story began! 16. 5 This text is for questions 20 - 23 Acid rain is rain that is highly acidic because of sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and other air pollutants dissolved in it. Normal rain is slightly acidic, with a pH of 6. Acid rain may have a pH value as low as 2.8. Acid rain can severely damage both plant and animal life. Certain lakes, for example, have lost all fish and plant life because of acid rain. Acid rain comes from sulphur in coal and oil. When they burn, they make sulphur dioxide (SO2 ). Most sulphur leaves factory chimneys as the gaseous sulphur dioxide (SO2 ) and most nitrogen is also emitted as one of the nitrogen oxides (NO or NO2 ), both of which are gases. The gases may be dry depositedabsorbed directly by the land, by lakes or by the surface vegetation. If they are in the atmosphere for any time, the gases will oxidise (gain an oxygen atom) and go into solution as acids. Sulphuric acid (H2 SO4 ) and the nitrogen oxides will become nitric acid (HNO3 ). The acids usually dissolve in cloud droplets and may travel great distances before being precipitated as acid rain. Catalysts such as hydrogen peroxide, ozone and ammonium help promote the formation of acids in clouds. More ammonium (NH4 ) can be formed when some of the acids are partially neutralised by airborne ammonia (NH3 ). Acidication increases with the number of active hydrogen (H+) ions dissolved in acid. Hydrocarbons emitted by for example, car exhausts will react in sunlight with nitrogen oxides to produce ozone. Although it is invaluable in the atmosphere, low level ozone causes respiratory problems and also hastens the formation of acid rain. When acid rain falls on the ground it dissolves and liberates heavy metals and aluminium (Al). When it is washed into lakes, aluminium irritates the outer surfaces of many fish. As acid rain falls or drains into the lake the pH of the lake falls. Forests suffer the effect of acid rain through damage to leaves, through the loss of vital nutrients, and through the increased amounts of toxic metals liberated by acid, which damage roots and soil micro organisms. 20. What does the text mainly talk about? A. The definition of acid rain. B. The process of acid rain. C. The effect of acid rain. D. Acid rain. E. Rain. 21. The acid of normal rain is than the acid rain. A. higher B. lower C. denser D. severer E. the same 22. The third paragraph tells us about ... . A. acid rain damages environment B. how acid rain endangers life C. how acid rain occurs D. the cause of acid rain E. the acid rain cause 23. Acid rain can severely damage both plant and animal life. (Paragraph 2) The underlined word has the closest meaning to ... . A. harm B. hang C. endow D. produce E. develop

However, youd better think a hundred times before you decide to take a part time job. There are a lot of things that should be factored in on the decision to take a part time job. On the negative side, working and still maintaining a good grade at school is not an easy task. Having less time for schoolwork becomes the main negative effect. Consequently, many students who work part time fail to perform at their best both on schoolwork and on examinations. Moreover, a parttime job can really interfere with the students free time. It also cuts into their studies and/or social life. On the positive side of things, a part time job helps students to support day to day living expenses. Working can be a valuable part of a students life, if taken on responsibly. Students can derive a great deal from working, considerably more than just money. In most cases, they can acquire a nice dose of discipline and a whole new set of skills and experiences. Another benefit of part- time work is the opportunity to expand the resume. Ideally, a student should try to find a job that is related in some way to his/her selected field of study. But even not, a student can still gain some work experience and develop skills. Working takes a lot of time and energy, so students need to make sure to be able to handle both employment and their current commitments. Finally, if you are considering working part time, talk to your school counselor to discuss this move. Simply explain your goals to someone else can help you make decisions and figure out your priorities. 26. What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph? A. Students should take many consideration before working. B. Students should meet their counselor before studying.

He did not like Hercules because Herculess strength. He told Hercules that he was going to punish him. He ordered Hercules to do twelve very difficult and dangerous things. Hercules could not refuse. He had to obey the orders of the King. The Kings first order was to kill a lion. The lion lived in a valley. There were hills all around the valley. All people who lived in the valley were afraid of the lion. It had killed all their cattle. It sometimes killed people, too. It was so strong and fierce that everyone was afraid of it. At sunrise Hercules picked up his bow and arrows and set off. He walked and walked until he came to the valley. It was then midday. He could not see any people. They were so frightened that they would not leave their houses. Then, Hercules saw a large tree. That will make a good club to hit the lion, he thought. He pulled out the tree and cut its branches. He made it into a club. Then he sat down behind some bushes to wait for the lion. He waited all the afternoon. Then, at sunset the lion appeared. It was covered with blood. At first the lion did not see Hercules. He shot an arrow at it. The arrow hit the lion. It stuck in the Lions skin but did not hurt the lion. Hercules shot another arrow. It also hit the lion but did not hurt it. The lion looked around angrily. Hercules took out another arrow into his bow. Before he could shoot it, the lion saw him. It jumped at him. Hercules lifted his club high into the air and hit the lion on the head with all his strength. The club broke into two pieces. The lion fell to the ground but did not die. Then Hercules held the lions throat in his hand. He squeezed the lions throat until it died. Then Hercules cut the skin off the lion and wore it over his shoulders. He made for himself another club. Then he went back to the King. 30. How did Hercules kill the lion? A. He shot an arrow at it. B. He shot another arrow into his bow. C. He squeezed the lions throat. D. He hit the lion with the club. This text is for questions 34 - 36 The water cycle is also known as the hydrological cycle. There is the same amount of water on the Earth now as there was when the Earth began. The water cycle is how the earths water recycles itself. The cycle includes precipitation, evaporation, condensation and evapotranspiration. Earths water keeps changing from liquid water to vapour and then back again. This cycle happens because of the suns heat and gravity. How does the Water Cycle work? First of all, water molecules from lakes, rivers, streams, reservoirs, and the sea get heated up by the sun and then turn into vapour that rises into the air. Next, these water molecules form into clouds. This is because a process called condensation occurs. When the air and the water cool, they form drops of water which then fall to the earth as rain. If they are frozen, they become snow or sleet. Once the water reaches the ground, it can flow across the land until it reaches rivers, lakes, streams, or the sea. It can also sink into the ground as flow because of gravity through gaps in rock, gravel and sand. Because of this, it reaches these bodies of water too. Now the cycle begins again, when water is evaporated once more. Many of us think water will always be there for us when we want it. Without water, living thing would die. You will die if you go without water for more than a week. Plants will die without water and that would kill all of the animals that eat the plants. 34. What does paragraph two tell us about? A. The process involved in the water cycle. B.The cycle of water condensation. C.The process of making water. D. The process of raindrops. E. The cycle of raindrops. 35. this is because a process called condensation occurs.(Paragraph 4) What does the underlined word refers to? A. Water molecules form into clouds B.Molecules form into clouds C.Water molecule D. Molecules E. Water 36. heated up by the sun and then turn into vapour that rises ( Paragraph 3). The synonym of the underlined word is ... . A. disappear B. increase C. become D. reach E. take This text is for questions 37 - 39 Distillation, the process of separating the elements of a solution, is widely used in industry today. The two most common methods are fractional distillation, used in the preparation of alcoholic beverages, and flash distillation, used for the conversion of ocean water to fresh water. In fractional distillation a mixture is separated into its various component parts by boiling. This method makes use of the fact that different elements boil at varying temperature. For example, alcohol has a considerably lower boiling temperature than water: the boiling water of water is 212 degrees Fahrenheit, and the boiling temperature of alcohol is 172 degrees Fahrenheit. Thus, when a mixture of alcohol and water is heated, the alcohol vaporizes more quickly than the water. The distillate is collected and the process is repeated until the desired purity has been achieved. Flash distillation does not require high temperatures but instead is based on pressure. In this process, a liquid that is to be separated is forced from a compartment kept under high pressure into a

UAS/Ing/XII/2012

9 compartment kept at a lower pressure. When a liquid moves into the lower pressure chamber, it suddenly vaporizes, and the vapor is then condensed into a distillate. 37. Which of the following processes would probably involve distillation? A. Adding a new substance to a mixture. B. Removing impurities from a solution. C. Collecting the water into high temperature. D. Dividing a pure element into smaller quantities. E. Mixing two elements together to form a new solution. 38. What does paragraph two tell us about? A. The boiling temperatures of various liquids B. The compartment kept under high pressure C. The change of salt water into fresh water D. The process of fractional distillation E. The example of fractional distillation 39. until the desired purity has been achieved (Paragraph 2) The word purity has similar meaning to . A. thoroughness B. goodness C. cleanness D. rightness E. clearness This text is for questions 40 - 42 Deviations from normal temperature patterns of the southern Pacific Ocean, between Australia and South America, result in the phenomenon called El Nio. Under normal conditions, eastern trade winds blows across the Pacific. These drive sun-warmed surface water from the central Pacific to the coast of northern Australia. When clouds form above this area of warm water and move over Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Australia, they bring rain with them. Every two to seven years, however, this pattern is interrupted by the El Nio event. During El Nio, the Pacific Ocean of Australia does not warm as much as it normally does. Instead, it becomes warmer right up to the coast of Peru in South America. At the same time, the easterly trade winds that blow across the Pacific reverse their direction. This causes high-pressure systems to build up to the north of and across the Australian Continent, preventing moist tropical air reaching the continent. These conditions in turn result in storms, and in rain falling in the eastern Pacific Ocean and in South America instead of in Australia, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia, which suffer drought conditions. While the effects of El Nio are sometimes weak, at the other times they are very strong. During a severe El Nio period, extreme drought conditions prevail as in 1982 - 1983 and 1997-1998. In contrast heavy rainfall and flooding occurred in parts of North and South America. In 1997, there were severe storms and Australia, they bring rain with them. Every two to seven years, however, this pattern is interrupted by the El Nio event. This causes high-pressure systems to build up to the north of floods in Mexico and further north along the west coast of the United States. The converse of the El Nio effect is the La Nia effect, which is an exaggeration of normal conditions. This takes place when trade winds blow strongly and consistently across the Pacific towards Australia. This pushes the warm waters from the central Pacific, off the northern Australian coast to build up into a mass that is bigger than normal. Thus, much more cloud develops than usual, and this brings considerably more rain to Australia and neighbouring countries. 40. Which of the following statements is not correct according to the text? A. El Nino occurs every 2 7 years B. El Nino causes Papua New Guinea suffers drought C. The coast of Peru becomes warmer because of El Nino D. El Nino causes the moist tropical air reach Australian continent E. El Nino causes high pressure system builds up across Australian continent 41. What is the main idea of the second paragraph? A. El Nino is in United States. B. The effect of El Nino is weak. C. The effect of El Nino can be extremely strong. D. La Nina is the contrast of El Nino phenomenon. E. The effect of El Nino can be very dangerous. 42. The converse of the El Nio effect is the La Nia effect, (Paragraph 4). The underlined word can be best replaced by ... . A. normal

This text is for questions 43 - 47 There are many reasons of using plastics for our daily life. However, there are also some reasons that show that plastics are hazardous for our life. Actually, plastics take an important part of our everyday life. As you read this book, perhaps you are sitting on a plastic chair, leaning on a plastic-coated table or wearing plastic shoes. We prefer using plastics to other materials for some reasons. Some of them are: they can be shaped into almost anything, they are light and relatively cheap and they can be produced in different colour. Moreover, they are good insulators because heat and electricity do not travel through plastics easily. Further, unlike metals and wood, plastics do not rust or rot. On the other hand, plastics have some disadvantages too. Plastics are made of natural resources which are not renewable. It means that they will eventually run out. Besides, they are also difficult to recycle. Many plastics do not rot or break down naturally. If we dont recycle them, it means plastic rubbish will remain on our planet for a very long time. Of course, it will cause pollution. In fact, recycling plastics is complicated. Different types of plastics need to be processed in different ways. Moreover, plastics are not as strong as many metals. They also melt at high temperatures, sometimes giving off poisonous fumes. Surely, the poisonous fumes are dangerous for living things. 43.
