CHG 4244 Plant Design Project (Winter 2013)

University of Ottawa

CHG 4244 Plant Design Project Report #1 Literature review and preliminary design
Report, performed by the whole group, is due January 25th 2013 and is worth 15% of the report mark. The final report corresponds to 55% of the total course mark. As mentioned in the outline, the objective of this course is to complete the design and optimization of a facility to produce a high production volume (HPV) chemical. The plan is to manufacture the product on a reasonably large scale, say 20 000 to 100 000 t/year. This will vary with the type of HPV selected, the market demand for this project and the type of project. Have a look at European- and Asian-based multinationals as well as North American ones. The production of an intermediate is also interesting, as intermediates are most often lower molecular weight organics whose thermodynamic properties can be found in process software such as HYSYS (now Aspen One or Aspen HYSYS) or UniSim Design. Pay a special attention to the availability of reaction kinetics to produce this chemical. Once you have selected your HPV chemical and the raw materials required to produce it, contact the instructor (directly or by e-mail) to reserve your selection. Another group might have selected the same compound. Wait for an approval before proceeding with your work. In the email, identify group members and the chemical in question. Please send ONE e-mail per group. An answer will be provided at the earliest convenience. Report #1 Content and guidelines: This report is based on a literature review and the specific considerations of process synthesis (Chapter 1 of the final report). When possible, use heuristics to justify your work. Essentially this report is the first building block of your final report. It should consist of: Executive summary (elements pertaining to the content of this report) Table of Contents (with only the elements of this report but with final numbering) Chapter 1 (good first draft) Chapter 2 (preliminary draft no Unisim diagram) Chapter 6 (with some elements of pollution prevention techniques, LCA and HAZOP) References Appendix I (preliminary) Appendix J (task allocation for this report) In other words, 1. Review the literature for information related to the manufacture of the HPV chemical. Identify possible reaction paths to produce the chemical. 2. What are the safety requirements for the production of this chemical? Provide brief MSDSs for all compounds present in the process. Are there any major environmental concerns involved in producing this chemical?

3. Select a widely used reaction path to manufacture this chemical. Justify your selection. 4. Specify and discuss the nine engineering considerations related to the production of this chemical (See course notes of CHG3112 and CHG 4244). 5. Draw a detailed block flowsheet diagram (BDF) of your process (not in Unisim).
