Status symbol: A sign of wealth or great prestige (i.e. a new car). Hitting the highways: Tourism 3rd largest industry in US. 1930s: Car craze in America, started in the 1920s.

Refrigerator sales continued to climb even during the Great Depression. Talkies = movies with sound. Mass media: Movies, radio, and other large works of communication. o o Avoided controversial topics as many sought escape from reality. John Steinbecks The Grapes of Wrath and John Dos Passos. Literatures focus shifted from the individual to the struggle of the masses. Artists of the 1930s: Thomas Hart Benton, Edward Hopper, and Grant Wood. Playwrights & theater directors: Clifford Odets Waiting for Lefty, glorifying the Depression era worker. Documentary photography showed the US of the Depression era stripped of hopes and dreams.
