SURGICAL TERMS 1. Amputation the removal of a body extremity by trauma, prolonged constriction, or surgery. 2.

Angioplasty the technique of mechanically widening narrowed or obstructed arteries 4. Arthrodesis - surgical connection of adjacent bones so the bones can grow together into one. 5. Cauterization is the burning of part of a body to remove or close off a part of it in a process called cautery, which destroys some tissue, in an attempt to mitigate damage, remove an undesired growth, or minimize other potential medical harmful possibilities such as infections, when antibiotics are not available. 6. Centesis - a surgical puncture that removes fluid for diagnostic purposes or to remove excess fluid from a body part or organ. 7. Craniotomy is a surgical operation in which a bone flap is temporarily removed from the skull to access the brain. 8. Curettage is the use of curette to remove tissue by scraping or scooping. 9. Debridement removal of dead, damaged or diseased tissue. 10. Disarticulation is the separation of two bones at their joint, either naturally by way of injury or by a surgeon during amputation. 11. Excision - cutting out an organ, tumor, or other tissue. 12. Fistula an abnormal communication between two hollow viscera, or one hollow viscera and the skin. 13. Laparoscopy - this is the visual examination of the inside of the abdomen. The surgeon will use a laparoscope that passes through the small incision in the abdominal wall. It involves the use of a laparoscope and surgical instruments that will insert into the abdomen. A laparoscope is used for exploring and examining the inside of the abdomen, to sample specimens for biopsy and to perform surgical procedures. 14. Laparotomy a surgical procedure involving a large incision through the abdominal wall to gain access into the abdominal cavity. 15. Lobotomy a surgical technique that involves making an incision in the brain's frontal lobe, severing several nerve tracts. 16. Mastectomy the surgical removal of one or both breasts, partially or completely. 17. Myomectomy the surgical removal of a fibroid tumor (myoma) in the uterine mucular wall, leaving the uterus intact. 18. Pyeloplasty the surgical reconstruction or revision of the renal pelvis to drain and decompress the kidney. 19. Skin Grafting transplantation of skin from one site to another to improve function or appearance. 20. Vasectomy the surgical sterilization of a man by interrupting both vas deferens.
