CTC was part of an international collaboration of three renowned theater companiesCTC, Teatro Gioca Vita (Italy) & award-winning Scottish theater, Visible Fictions, for the world premiere of a dynamic and poetic shadow puppetry production of Peter Pan to open the season. Madeline & the Gypsies premiered, featuring the physical feats of co-collaborator, Circus Juventas, a St. Paul-based performing arts school offering youth circus training and performance opportunities. Award-winning playwright Barry Kornhauser adapted this classic Ludwig Bemelman book for the stage. Pioneering hip hop theater artist Will Powers comingof-age tale, Five Fingers of Funk, set within a classic 70s funk concert, kicked off the seasons teen programming on the Cargill Stage. The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe reunited director Rebecca Lynn Brown with scenic designer Ricardo Hernandez and lighting designer Matt Fry, the trio behind Esperanza Rising one of CTCs most widely acclaimed productions for the holiday production. The charming and monstrously fun tale, The Gruffalo, created by Tall Stories Theatre Company, came to life in the musical adaptation of this award-winning picture book. Tall Stories Theatre co-founder Olivia Jacobs directed on CTCs stage. Acclaimed director of Antigone, Greg Banks introduced Twin Cities audiences to promenade-style staging in a cutting-edge production of Romeo & Juliet, creating one of the theaters most talked about productions in recent history. Banks was awarded an Ivey for his direction of Romeo & Juliet. CTC premiered Iqbal, a true and inspiring tale about Iqbal Masih, a 12 year-old Pakistani boy who fought against child slavery in his home country. Fabrizio Montecchi and the internationally acclaimed theater company Teatro Gioco Vita returned to CTC to present Circoluna. Teatro Gioco Vita is celebrated as the leading shadow puppet theater in the world. The Italian theater companys production continued CTCs commitment to preschool programming. CTC continued to deliver Neighborhood Bridges, a critical literacy program linked to national and state educational standards for theater and state standards for language arts, in twenty classrooms in the Twin Cities metro. Ready for Life, our early learning initiative, advanced through two convenings of theater artists and child development professionals. The result was a framework for programming for early learners to be piloted at CTC and in local childcare centers in 2009-2010. A new Theatre Arts Training director was hired to reimagine and re-design the Theatre Arts Training program. Eleven new plays were in development in CTCs new play development program, Threshold.

*FY09 was a challenging year for Childrens Theatre Company. The recession had an enormous impact on CTCs endowment; investment losses exceeded $1.3 million. In addition, contributions and ticket revenue declined. The investment losses and declines in revenue combined with a $963,000 depreciation charge to result in a large decrease in net assets.
