In this years lineup, you will find films that are visually bold and artistically daring. Some present a refreshing view on the growing pains of childhood while others explore the immigrant experience from truly original perspectives. You will find award-winning films as well as stories about real people that go beyond the headlines. And in keeping with our tradition of discovering new talent, this years filmmakers will take you on provocative and exciting journeys to lands near and far. These more than 45 first-time filmmakers could very well be the future Cronenberg, Herzog, Wenders or Lelouch. Speaking of the great masters of cinema, they are also well represented in our program this year. Each film provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the sights, sounds and experiences of other cultures on the big screen and the chance to hear and maybe even meet some of the artists behind them. The languages may be different, but the emotions are the same. Film unites us like no other art form can. Michael Kutza | Founder and Artistic Director

A darling at this years 2011 Cannes Film Festival, The Artist is a black and white love song to silent cinema, and movies. Directed by Michel Hazanavicius (the OSS 117 films), The Artist tells the story of George Valentin (Jean Dujardin, best actor at Cannes) a very successful silent movie star who meets Peppy Miller (Brnice Bejo), a young extra, and helps her on her way up the Hollywood ladder. But when talking pictures arrive, disaster strikes not only Georges career but also the blossoming romance between the two. A visually stunning film with arresting performances, The Artist perfectly captures the silent film era while staying relevant today. 100 min.

PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, can be a whole new kind of war for our young men and women returning from Iraq and Afhghanistan. The opposite of fighting alongside your brothers and sisters in arms, this battle is often fought alone, against demons the soldier hides from others. The power of the documentary form is strongly felt as On the Bridge not only gives voice to the personal trauma our warriors endure but also as a means to help them honor their service and move forward as Americans. 96 min.

students
Cinema/Chicago brings more than 5,000 CPS students into theaters for special Education Outreach Screenings during the Festival and throughout the school year. These screenings cover a wide variety of genres, including foreign cinema, documentaries, local productions, and international new releases. With the help of the Cinema/Chicago Education Advisory Committeemade up of youth media professionals and educators films are chosen that relate to the CPS curriculum, exposing students to films from other cultures, in other languages, and about complex and engaging subjects. Prior to each screening, Cinema/Chicago provides study guides to prepare teachers and students for the content and concepts of the film, ensuring that the discussion regarding the film can take place long after the students have left the theater. Following each screening, students meet special guestsdirectors, actors, producers, critics, documentary subjectsand are able to ask questions pertaining to the screening. These discussions elevate students from passive audience members to engaged participants. Students are asked to write essays on the film, bringing their critical-thinking skills into play as they begin to look at film narratives, construction and visuals. Cinema/Chicago, with support from Columbia College Chicago, is proud to provide buses, theaters, films, speakers, study guides, and teacher support for our Education Outreach screenings at no cost to schools or teachers.

Regardless of the sourcefilm or video, textbook or novel, photograph or illustration, song or musicmedia carries a message and meaning. Media technology is advancing at an ever-increasing pace, and the rate at which students are bombarded with images, sounds, and information can be daunting. Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and communicate information gathered from these sources. Cinema/Chicagos Teachers Institute Media Literacy Training Program, with the support of the Polk Brothers Foundation, is a series of workshops designed to aid CPS educators in bringing new perspectives to curriculum development and classroom study through the use of film and other media. The Teachers Institute is led by renowned film and media professionals and professors. Through interactive workshops, the Teachers Institute gives educators the opportunity to increase their awareness of the impact of media on the lives of their students and to connect media literacy concepts and art education to Illinois learning standards.
The deaf and hard of hearing community has been often left out of the movie-going experience. For many years the Chicago International Film Festival has been reaching out to these communities to raise awareness of the multitude of high-quality subtitled films presented at the Festival. Additionally, with new initiatives beginning in Spring 2012, Cinema/Chicagos Education Outreach Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program will bring film and filmmaking to the deaf and hard of hearing student community in Chicago. From screenings that include post-screening discussions with American Sign Language interpreters to filmmaking and editing workshops, Cinema/Chicago strives to provide opportunities for the deaf and hard of hearing community beyond the Festival. More information will be available on Saturday, October 15 at 2:00 PM at a free screening of the documentary deaf Jam at the Chicago Cultural Center. Representatives from numerous deaf and hard of hearing advocacy groups will be on hand to discuss the deaf and hard of hearing community and their relationship to the arts.
