Editor/ Writers Comments

Amelia, L
I thought up Osprey Amadeus earlier this year. It stemmed from my desire to create a magazine. But after just three months, I was certain Id have to shut it down. Well, that time has passed. Its November and this is the first volume. Im unsure of how it will be received but whether the readers like it or dislike it, I encourage all to send feedback so that I can improve the magazine. As for the stories, I had a surprisingly difficult time accepting manuscripts. Many of them were trashed because they just did not meet the specified criteria. Most had no romance, no action, and no supernatural eventsalmost all fell short of producing all the things I love- despite what was outlined in the O.A guidelines. Somehow, people had gotten it in their heads that we were a realistic fiction literacy magazine. Frustrated, I ultimately, I threw everything out and started from scratch. I decided to create a magazine of my own stories. Its now something of personal, little adventure. I demolished the magazine website and Ive gone underground. Even so, prospective authors should definitely query at Osprey.amadeus@gmail.com if they have ideas, manuscripts, or comments. Our digital imprint, Bell Irie is still open to submissions, even if O.A is not. Look for a continuation of this publication next year. Enjoy the holidays!

The Girl Who Struck the Wall

August 18th, 2011 was the year TGWSTW found its way onto paper. Having reached the peak of my anime addiction, Id started reading manga months before as a new hobby. Originally, it was an easier alternative to catching up to the current episodes of the anime adaption of Odas One Piece. Eventually, I begin to prefer the original format over anime. I fell in love with the odd demons in the Nura Clan, the romance of Inuyasha, the Meiji Era Himura Kenshin dominated, and of course, the bad asses sailing the Grand Line and beyond. These were all graphic novels that inspired me at the time. You may or may not notice this in TGWSTW. If you do, cool. If not, I take that as a good sign as well. The last thing an author wants is for their work to sound unoriginal or mirror someone elses. The two chapters in this book are more like prologues than an actual story start. They introduceor rather, glimpse, the personality of the two main protagonists and the issues surrounding them pre- acuaintaintence. Below is the overview of the story as a large.

Labirichi Yockimori leads a relatively quiet life in a small town. Aside from her complicated relationship with her mother, Labirichi pretty much lives in her own world. She lives in the "now" and is her own best friend. But life takes an unexpected turn when she has random encounter with a mysterious girl, who seems to appear out of nowhere. From then on, Labirichi can't seem to stop running into trouble. In an attempt to outrun her troubles, Labirichi falls into another plane where she learns that she is not ordinary at all, but magically gifted. Unfortunately for her, there are opposing forces that wish to exploit this gift on a plane where everything is not at all as splendid as it appears on the surface. Even so, Labirichi's goal remains the same. All she wants to do is find her way back home.

Chapter 1 I have a hobby Grabbing a carton of orange juice out of the fridge, Macy Johnson sighed. Im so jealous. She said, pulling out a chair from the kitchen table. Just two seats away, her older sister, Holly, was shoving spoonfuls of cereal down her throat. It was a wonder she didnt choke. The girl put her spoon down and stared at her sister. She quickly chewed the remainder of her breakfast so that she could speak without blockage. Jealous of whom? Me? she asked. Macy nodded. Holly waved her right hand about her nose as though she smelled something terrible. I suppose I shouldnt be shocked, she mused. I am amazing, she added. Macy snorted and paused midway pouring her drink. Not you, she snapped, taking her seat at the table, Im jealous of what you do. Ah, that. What Holly Johnson does is document events by videotaping and photographing moments in time. Most people call it freelance journalism, documentaries, or photography. She calls it visual journalism. Mom, buy me that for my birthday. She dropped the catalog on her lap and asked her daughter, Why do you need a digital camera, Because I want to tell storiesthats all. Her mother stared at her for so long; Holly thought she wasnt going to answer. When she finally did speak, her only response was, What an odd child. According to Hollys journal that was one year, eleven months, and eighteen days. Is that a compliment, Macy? It probably was and Macy just didnt want to admit it. Instead, she just silently stared at her sister before saying, Never mind, getting up, tossing her cup into the sink, and leaving the room. Holly almost laughed. Did all the members of her family like to stare? She thought. Ten minutes later, the siblings grabbed their backpacks and made the trip to the bus stop. Can you please stop doing that? Essie James snapped, turning around in her seat to face Holly. What am I doing wrong? replied Holly, dropping the camera lens from her eye. Frowning, she answered. I am trying to have a conversation here. So, I would appreciate it if you would stop flashing that camera in my face. Holly looked up as the bus driver scolded them on travel etiquette. Essie just ignored him and continued to glare. Okay, lets compromise. What if I take the camera off flash? Holly said, holding out one hand, as if expecting a handshake. What if I break the camera and then, she hissed, leaning forward, you wont be able to take any pictures at all? Holly smiled and pulled her backpack from the seat and over her knees. Okay, what if I stop taking pictures of you and keep the camera? Essie smiled back, apparently satisfied with the result of their negotiations. She returned
Osprey Amadeus Winter 2012

her gaze to her companion and continued their discussion. Holly sighed as she put her camera into the front pocket of her backpack. Why are people so strict about their image? She wondered. They are always going, dont take it yet! Wait a minute! Do it another time! Dont they know that the best pictures are the ones captured in real time? A pose speaks a hundred less words than the real thing, she mused. A nine hundred word story is not what Im aiming for. Holly got to her feet as the bus came to a halt. Oh well, there are plenty of other people she could take pictures of.

Wings Chapter 1 End Next time, Holly is faced with an important challenge!

Chapter 1 Fates Cross It was said that in the beginning God created the earth, the animals, the skies, even the humans. The bible speaks of them all. But there was another race that was left out. Though God made them, you will not find them in any documents of old. Such was the fate of the Noris. Unlike humans, the Noris were said to wiser, kinder, and uncorruptible. Their names were Vlad, Callas, and Gale. Together these immortals bred a tree of children, whose lineage was one closest to God as any angel or child. For years, these deity-like creatures shared the Earth with humans and taught them magic. In turn, they were treated like Gods themselves. And as evolution took its hold, they slowly begin to take human form, inside and out. But for reasons unknown and never recorded, the Noris were all but extinct by the turn of the 18th century. That is when he was born. He was a Norisman who did not know fear. And at a young age, the boy decided he wanted to become stronger. And he did. Then he decided that he wanted to become the strongest magician. And he did. Then he decided he wanted to become the only magician. And so he did. And then he said, I see so much suffering in this world. These lowly humans pray but they rarely receive. Though I am the strongest predator, the empathy I feel from their pain is not dampened. God does not understand them. He does not impede trespassers and help those who are trespassed against. Temptation? Sin? Judgment and judged? How can he profess to know it when he himself has not lived this life? If I were God, I would change it. The he asked, If my resolve is strong enough, Can I become God? Two weeks later, he challenged God and lost. As punishment, he was stripped of his memories and forced to reincarnate every 100 years as a human until the end of all life on earth. Several Hundred Years Later- June 2011 BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! Gil Marshall's automatically swung his arm in the direction of his alarm clock. He was accustomed to hitting the snooze button and sleeping off the previous day until his body told him it was ready to wake up. He could ill afford to repeat that pattern today. If all goes well, he will probably never repeat it again. That's right, he told himself, and today was the entrance exam for the Wizard's Association. "Suit, chalk, identification," he said, going through the checklist of materials he had prepared for the day. He took his bath, laced himself with all manner of sweet smelling
Osprey Amadeus Winter 2012

products, and put on his suit. Looking in the mirror, he felt confident, however, by the time he reached the front door his self assurance had dwindled enough for him to change his shirt and toss his tie. Would that be sufficient? Did he make a mistake? What if he wasn't formal enough? Even so, he walked out the front door and threw the rest to the wind. The Association is so secretive; it is hard to know their corporate culture. He supposed that was why they were so misunderstood. Despite the general belief that the magicians of the W.A were government dogs, the Wizard's Association is actually an independent organization. Like Gil, all magicians aren't apart of it. Most hope to be and most never get accepted. Fear crept up his chest just from thinking about it. Less than an hour later, he arrived at his destination. The testing center was a small building adjacent to the eighteen story palace that towered over much of the town. Gil was baffled. There were only four cars in the parking lot, Gil saw. Did he get his days mixed up? That's when he saw him. His eyes were light gray and his skin was in deep contrast with his dark hair. One of his ears were pierced twice and he had a small red earring in each. This made it look like a vampire had taken a bite out of his ear. He didn't appear to have any other piercings or tattoos on his person. Although dressed in all black, his clothes were subtle. Gil guessed he wasn't interested in anything scene. The man sat on the stairs of the building like a raven perched on a window. His black hair, which hung down like a parrot's tail, seemed to dance with the wind. Sitting as he was in front of the cloudy backdrop of the sky, he was"So beautiful," Gil murmured. In that moment, the man's eyes met his. Oh, God, did he hear me? Gil thought, Am I insane? Why the hell did I just say that about another man? The man got to his feet and walked toward him. Gil stood rooted to the spot. However he may have looked on the outside, he was definitely panicking on the inside. In his mind, the man said, "What did you just say?" In reality, he said, "Looks like you are early. Most folks are probably hitting the snooze button as I speak. Gil looked bewildered. "W-what?" The man repeated himself. Gil breathed an air of relief. So he didn't hear, he thought. That's good. "Don't the exams start at 7:50 am?" His lips formed an o and he looked at him apologetically. "The building opens up at 7:50. The exams start at 9 am." Gil almost cursed. "Why are there cars in the parking then?" he asked, his voice full of frustration. "The supervisors are getting ready to start the day," he replied. "You know, practice and all. Many probably won't come for it, though. They probably want to train in secret and hide their abilities until the test." "What about you?" "Me? I'm just a magician like you. The name is Hawk." He held out his hand. Maybe if Gil had known what was ahead, perhaps he wouldn't have taken that hand. The moment he did, had their fates already begun to intersect?

The Noris Chapter 1 End Next time, what is this trepidation laying ahead? And the famed exam Gil is anxious to pass starts!

Osprey Amadeus Winter 2012

Chapter 1 Prologue to Legends In the seventh year of the fifth century, a legacy was born within the castle walls of the king in the country of Yurvan. The fruitarian of a blade conceived through the study of occultism and alchemy and the careful application of their principles into a weapon. Rumor of its indestructibility soon leaked into the outside world and the wary eye the surrounding countries had cast on Yurvan began to leer more candidly. Even so, the current monarchy and its court were confident in their new discovery and hoped that they would not only be able to salvage their land in the battles they were, thus far, losing, but possibly end the war itself. Finally, three years later, the warfare, dubbed the Era of Sempiternal, came to a staggering close. Methiora, Yurvans allies, were swallowed up completely by neighboring victorious forces, while Yurvan itself was divided into three new countries, one of which later dissolved as an enemy countrys territory. What followed their failure was a hundred years of enmity from the Yurvian people. An emotion that thawed just as the legacy of Yurvans indestructible blade had just three years before. This legacy eventually became legend, which transformed into myth, descended into fiction, until finally; it became a story that adults told children in order to preach the dangers of going astray. For, according to the eccentric historians of today, that is what the blade did best. Even so, in the land of what would have been modern day Yurvan, this phantom blade, as it was called, had all but disappeared from even the vaguest of tall tales. But after several exanimate centuries, this apparition was due for another appearance. Five centuries and twenty- two years later, in fact. After the War On earth, only four countries exist. All of the land is occupied by countrymen, monarchy, and their goodies and livelihood, as well as the surrounding natural resources. In general, food is plentiful and much of the land is fertile. The lords and tenants are prosperous and so are the monarchies. With the exception of one of the four countries, the atmosphere of contentment is thriving. Indeed, after centuries of war and misfortune, the world has at last settled into a felicitous period. However, beyond the borders of these four countries, there are those who are not experiencing this good fortune. While the land is settled on from shore to shore and four governments dominate the territory, two islands of unwanted land are separated by Ozhire territory. These isolated territories were ultimately nicknamed lawless lands. At the end of the Sempiternal Era, the ones who were the most hostile and dissatisfied with the outcome lived there. They were also the ones who were most savage and vocal when the enemy attempted to claim their spoils. And while other citizens had been destructive, none of them had been as successful as the lawless residents in driving the soldiers out. After several attempts from different allied countries and multiple refusals to compromise, the four powers turned their eyes away from the lawless lands. With that, the people's hope of one day becoming a recognized, independent government fleeted into futility. To the outside world, the lawless lands became a place reputed to be home to foul, barbaric, and wicked people. Aside from criminals, no one ventured there, and no one left, lest they face imprisonment or death at the borders. Because of this, news
Osprey Amadeus Winter 2012

of the outside world became scarce and innovations slowly came to a standstill. By the turn of the next century, the world had all but left their descendants behind.until the year 1029, that is.

Chapter 1 Once Upon a Time in Quinn, and Then There was a Door It was five minutes after the bell had rung and a single girl was still running down the hallway. The heel of her shoes made a loud clanking sound against the tiled floor. Her beige coat that shouldve hugged the blouse of her uniform danced in the air as she raced to class. Just a little farther, she thought. Just a littMs. Yockimori! So close, she thought, giving herself a mental kick as she came to a halt. As the figure calling out to her approached, Labirichi Yockimori couldnt help but think of how unlucky she was. The blonde giant coming her way was none other than Inglewood Academys Executive Principal Alice Bronte. Labirichi grunted. Am I being haunted? Labirichi thought, schooling her features to hide her annoyance. Why are you running down the hall? She asked, trying to hide the smirk that itched at the corner of her plum colored lips. It didnt matter. Everyone knew she delighted in punishment. Bite, squeeze, swallowshe was a python. I was trying to get to class, the girl explained. The bell has already rung. School policy dictates that tardy students must go to the principals office for permission to enter the classroom. I am sure you know that, Bronte retorted. Its true. It was these types of rigorous applications that helped supplant all other schools as the states top educational institution. Despite this, the teachers at Inglewood Academy often showed mercy to their students; its a luxury that would only wither and die in the hands of the principal. This is the third time you have been tardy this week. Do you know what that means? She asked. The principal paused to let Yockimori respond. When Labirichi didnt say a word, Bronte continued. You will be suspended until your parents come to see me. The suspension comes into effect immediately, so I think it would be best to call your parents and have them pick you up. Yes, maam, Labirichi nodded. Old hag! cried Labirichi, once Principal Bronte was out of sight. Labirichi, or Ichi, as family called her, went all the way to the front desk before turning around and deciding to walk home. After all, why hasten a scolding? Moka Yockimori would surely be disappointed. She had enrolled her daughter at the famous Inglewood Academy so that she could find direction in life and improve her skills. Everyone in Labirichis family works in the medical field. Though her mother, Moka, said that she would be happy with any career her daughter chose, she obviously wanted Labirichi to don a white robe. That is the reason why Labirichi was uprooted from her hometown and dropped off two hundred and twenty four miles away to this god forsaken place. It was, as her mother put it, all for her sake. But after two years of intense learning, Labirichis grade point average remained the same.

Osprey Amadeus Winter 2012

Labirichi smiled to herself. Suspension was just an unofficial vacation. Was this the best punishment the executives could come up with? Labirichi let the thought slip from her mind as she passed an empty playground. An eerie feeling passed over her, causing the girl to come to a halt. Her eyes instantly fell upon the park and like a frightened rabbit noting predators, the hair on the back of her head stood up Labirichi trembled. I should hurry home, she decided, recalling the recent surge in missing in people around the area. But try as she might, Labirichi could not bring herself to look away from the abandoned park. The playground was old, really old. A puddle of dirt and long passed rain sat at the base of the slide. The wood next to it was broken and molding. Rust rendered the seesaw immobile and made the swing look far too distasteful to play on. The monkey bars beside it were also too hazardous to climb, having had one too many displaced fibrous pieces of wood peeking out of the centerpiece. In all her years of having gone to Inglewood, this was the first time she noticed the playground. Come back tomorrow, Jayael! said a far away voice. Dont I always? chuckled a girl, and like something off of the SyFy Channel, a shadowy form stepped onto the playground from out of thin air. The form materialized into a vaguely visible young woman, about the same age as Labirichi. Labirichi stared, unable to look away. She couldnt tell whether it was from shock, fascination, or both. She jumped the fence separating the sidewalk from the playground and walked a few paces in front of Labirichi. After about ten steps, the girl came to a sudden halt. She glanced over her shoulder, as if shed felt Labirichis gaze, and said, Whats wrong with you? Do you have an eye problem? she asked. Unable to move, Labirichi said nothing. The girl sighed and continued on her way, muttering about how odd commoners were. Traces of her, the parts of the girl that still appeared shadowy, began to dissipate. Then, the fully materialized parts of her began to crack and disappear like glass. All the while, the girl continued to walk. Her expression never changed. Her movements never faltered. It was like a model walking nonchalantly on a runway with one broken six inch heel. What the hell? It took several minutes for a dumbstruck Labirichi to come to her senses. That night, although she had convinced herself that shed convinced herself that it was her imagination, in truth, her head was still reeling over what she saw. So, as if to disprove her own eyes, Labirichi asked her mother about the Quinn site. That old place? Its been there for ages. Really? Today was the first time Ive ever seen it. Considering the amount of times you have walked home during school, I am surprised you never noticed, she snapped. Now, stop talking so much and finish your supper. It is almost ten minutes until bedtime. If you dont finish, youll go to bed hungry tonight. Since when do I have a curfew? Labirichi hissed, biting her lip defiantly. You have one as of today! Are you kidding me? That doesnt leave enough time for leisure. Plus, I have to take a bath, remember?

Osprey Amadeus Winter 2012

And you have plenty of time to do that now that you are suspended. Besides, youve got nowhere to go tomorrow. You can clean up the house while Im gone. Disgruntled, Labirichi sighed. Whatever- Dont whatever me, young lady, Moka Yockimori hissed, pointing her chopsticks like a firearm. Also, I would appreciate it if you would start calling someone to pick you up from school from now on. Ms. Raymond said she doesnt mind. Why? -there are too many perverts and murderers around here for you to be acting so casual. Labirichi back straightened, Huh? What are you- dont tell me- the missing people reports? Yes, that! her mother replied, jerking her chopsticks in a stabbing motion. I have no curves, My butt and chest is flat. My leg is covered in scars and.oh, yeahIm Asian- Not blonde! I think the chances of perverts passing me by are pretty high. Her mother frowned. Thats the sort of foolish thinking that can get a person killed. You should never underestimate people, especially based on looks. Charitable tongues that shed scaly skin are usually the most wily and dangerous of all. I think I am more in danger of being injured by chopsticks than anything else right now. The stern warning embedded into Mokas eyes did not promote a continuation of the conversation. How do you know it is a pervert? Last time I checked, no one had any leads. Besides, most of them were young. They could have runaway. This town is suffocating, so its not hard to imagine. Contrary to what you may think, Moka replied, tartly, clearly not amused, Some children love their homes and wouldnt think of disappointing their parents. Grimacing, Labirichi excused herself. Hmph, she snorted as she made her way upstairs. I bet she said that for me. Her mothers voice chased her up the stairs, stopping Labirichi in her tracks. Youve forgotten something, havent you? Ummmm, I dont think so. It is your responsibility to wash the dishes. I cooked, you clean, got it? Ill do it later, Labirichi grunted, resuming her task. Come do it now! From that time on, until she went to bed that night, Labirichis feet landed on the floor with a THUD sounding for each step.

Chapter 2 Sunset in the Early Morning Earlier that morning, a sixteen year old girl in lavender robes bowed before her master. They stood in the center of an ancient arena as the students around them applauded. Remnants of their battle lay about the pair, and to the students around them, they demonstrated an impressive battle of wits and strength. Celestial Master David, however, had an entirely different opinion. Youre weak, he said, not bothering to bow, So weak that I defeated you before we even began. Slowly, the girl looked up. The applause faded away, and every ear in the arena was wide open. She tried to focus on the blood dripping from her left hand, but she could only do that for so long. Avoid his gaze forever and shed be mistaken for an even greater weakling. The girl said nothing. Words failed her. Jayael, your test is over. Take a seat. Jayael nodded and turned on her heel, but not before she was rebuked a second time. Jayael, next time I will dock points if you do not follow proper procedures. Yes, sir, she breathed, thinking ill of him. After all, why should students have to thank their teachers for insulting them? She tried to perish the thought, but those pungent emotions continued to linger. Calm down, she told herself, quietly, my time will come. Taking her seat among her peers, Jayael smiled weakly as they patted her on the back. That was great, Jay. I hope I do as well as you. Master doesnt know what he is talking about. No, she thought, you dont know what you are talking about. If I cannot impress a Master in this environment, how can I be the best? SEAN KIERAN, BOW TO YOUR MASTER! Master Allys voice boomed throughout the arena. Jayael ignored it. She had watched the previous subjects fight as though they were doing so in slow motion. With painstaking accuracy, the girl noted every single success and failure. Then, she applied them. And although nearly all their successes resulted in her failures, she did manage to knock Master David off his feet, which is more than any of the other students could claim. Even so, he never once uttered the words weak to them. The more she thought about it, the more it pissed her off. She wanted to decimate the arena. Break something, anything, to vindicate her, anything to express how she felt. Maybe then, she could calm down. That would be foolish however. If she was going to be the best, she needed to quell the anger, or at least, mask it behind a facade. Besides, who has ever heard of a hot headed Celestial Master? It is true. Jayael has met them all. Years ago, when the girl was just a child, she stared in awe at their magnificence. The Celestial Masters: Lou, Bellatrix, David, Kristen, and Jeremy sat at her grandmothers dining room table, telling tales of their adventures in the Sonic Void. It must have been almost ten years ago, but Jayael remembered it as though it were yesterday. Five of the six the most beautiful and powerful people in the world were in
Osprey Amadeus Winter 2012

her living room. Whether it was long, short, wide, thin, thick, or narrow, their basic characteristics remained the same. Each had white hair, red eyes, and a distinctive shadow beneath the right eye. They had all gathered in her sanctuary for one thing: the small child that had always sat next to Jayael during dinner. She was just three years older than Jayael when she went away. It would be five years before they would meet again. By then, her older sister had become the youngest Celestial Master to have ever lived. And now, she was sitting behind a microphone, giving out orders to students before they were beaten to a pulp. It made Jayael sick. How did she do it? Why her? Jayael thought. Thinking about it was depressing, so she digressed. Unfortunately, doing so meant looking up and seeing Master David bow to Sean instead of Sean bowing to his Master first. Master David looked up, Congratulations, Mr. Kieran. You have passed and may now advance. You have two options. Attempt the Advance Level Test or take the Third Level Course. A smile curled in the corner of Sean Kierans lip as he replied, I shall attempt the Advance Level Test, Master. Murmurs filled the arena. Getting to his feet, Master David nodded before turning on his heel and stepping aside. SEAN KIERAN, BOW TO YOUR MASTER! boomed a voice, but this time, it was not Allys. A groan of frustration escaped Jayael. I am weak. Me. Not him, but me, thought Jayael. If he allowed Sean Kieran to beat him, he must be weak. But then.when we foughtI should have sworn One of the boys next to Jayael leaned closer to her and whispered, Look, Seans about to fight another Master. I hear she has never been defeated by another student. Is that so? Jayael smirked. I guess that means she better sharpen her claws when I get to her class, huh? If you say so, the boy replied, uncertain. Jayael moved to the side, cramming for the first look at this new Master. And sure enough, there she was. Her white hair was short in the back and two inches longer near her temple. The longer hair was combed forward and fell over her face. Still, there was little mistaking her identity. It was Ally Livingston, Jayaels older sister! In addition to her hair, those wide, blue eyes of hers were now a bright crimson. Despite this dramatic change, her Italian roots still shown through. Jayael scoffed at her peers, who were so busy gawking at Allys abilities that they didnt even notice her get up.
