Experiment # 02

Experiment #02

To Determine the Specific Gravity of Fine Aggregate

ASTM Designation: C128

Apparatus
Balance, Pycnometer, Mould, Tamper

Procedure
Partially fill the pycnometer with water Now introduce into the pycnometer 500 10 gm of saturated surface-dry fine aggregate prepared as described in Section 8, and fill with additional water to approximately 90 % of capacity Manually roll, invert, and agitate the pycnometer to eliminate all air bubbles. Mechanically agitate the pycnometer by external vibration in a manner that will not degrade the sample After eliminating all air bubbles, adjust the temperature of the pycnometer and its contents to 23.0 2.0C (by partial immersion in circulating water if necessary) Now bring the water level in the pycnometer to its calibrated capacity Determine the total mass of the pycnometer, specimen, and water. Remove the fine aggregate from the pycnometer, dry to constant mass at a temperature of 110 5C, cool in air at room temperature for 1 12h, and determine the mass. Determine the mass of the pycnometer filled to its calibrated capacity with water at 23.0 2.0C. Specific Gravity of the Aggregate = A/ (B+S C)
