A central mission of The Magnes is to make its rich and diverse holdings available for use by scholars and others engaged in research, study, and cultural enrichment. The policies below are intended to balance broad access to these unique collections with the need to protect and preserve them for future generations of users. Your signature on The Magnes research registration form indicates that you agree with these conditions: 1. All requests for use of materials in The Magnes Collection should be for valid research or other academic or educational purposes. 2. Requests must be submitted at least two weeks in advance of intended use. Requests may be submitted online (magnes.org/research/collection-services), by phone (510-643-2789), or in person. 3. All requests are subject to review by the curatorial staff, and permission to use materials is contingent on the accessibility, physical condition of materials, or on other limiting factors. 4. The following materials are restricted from use: 1) unprocessed materials; 2) donations for which the donor has indicated restrictions on public use; 3)materials deemed too fragile to stage for viewing. 5. All materials approved for research use must be viewed on-site in The Magnes building, 2121 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA. Approved materials will be made available for viewing either in the Helzel Collection Study Room or, for more fragile or over-sized materials, in the storage facilities of The Magnes. The location and conditions of collections use is at the discretion of the curatorial staff. 6. Use of Magnes holdings in the Helzel Collection Study Room for classes, symposia, etc. is limited to groups of 15 or fewer. Requests for use by larger groups may, in special cases, be accommodated following curatorial review. 7. Individual researchers or classes are required to check bags, purses, backpacks, oversized coats, and other personal belongings before viewing materials in the collection. 8. Food and drink (including covered water bottles) are not allowed in the Helzel Collection Study Room. 9. Laptop computers may be used in the Helzel Collection Study Room, but laptop bags must be checked in. 10. Curatorial or public service staff must be present at all times during the viewing of materials in the collection. Materials staged for study may generally be handled only by curatorial or public service staff.

11. Materials approved for research use must be viewed during regular public service hours unless other arrangements have been made and approved in advance. 12. Researchers are required to present picture identification and to fill out and sign a registration form (for first-time users) or to register at The Magnes reception desk on subsequent visits. Students in classes are required to sign in on the day of their visit to The Magnes.

Photography and Videography in the Helzel Collection Study Room Personal cameras and videorecording devices, including those contained in mobile devices such as phones and tablet computers, may be used in the Helzel Collection Study Room, depending on the physical condition of materials, copyright law, and the general policies outlined above. Photographs or videorecordings taken in the Helzel Collection Study Room must be for personal use only. Photographs or videorecordings may not be published, posted on the internet, donated or sold to another repository, or exhibited without express permission of The Magnes Collection. Use of flash equipment or external lighting is prohibited. Materials to be photographed or videorecorded will be staged and handled exclusively by The Magnes curatorial or public services staff. In order to preserve materials, movement or handling for photographic purposes will be strictly limited. If an item has a publicly accessible digital surrogate, patrons will be referred to that online surrogate. If an item does not have an existing digital surrogate, a digital copy of all photographs or videorecordings made in the Helzel Collection Study Room must be provided for inclusion in The Magnes digital archive. Patrons must identify the item(s) they photograph within the frame of their shots. The Magnes will supply citation streamers for this purpose. Identification should include: The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life, title of item, item accession number (as indicated in The Magnes online catalog: www.magnesalm.org). Photography of The Magnes holdings housed in The Bancroft Library is subject to Bancroft policies for photography (bancroft.berkeley.edu/info/camera.html).
