FaQ
What is the difference between a .00385 and a .00392 Temperature Coefficient?
The only difference is the amount that the resistance changes per degree of temperature. Both will read 100 ohms at 0C, but at 100C the .00385 will read 138.5 ohms and the .00392 will read 139.2 ohms. The sensor must be properly matched to the measuring instrument to obtain an accurate reading.

Stator RTD Class 301

SidE EXiT, LaminaTEd

Class 301 Overview Stator winding Style rTds

Side exit stator winding style RTDs are rectangular, flat, laminated sensors commonly called Stator Sticks because they are inserted between the coils in the stator of a motor. These averaging type sensors are used in electric motors and generators for continuous sensing of the temperature and provide for consistent thermal monitoring without false alarms. Side exit stators differ from standard rear exit stators in that the lead wire or cable exits from the side of the body. Initially a custom sensor, side exits are becoming a popular replacement for the rear exit due to less stress on the lead wire or cable when routing to the controller. They are typically used in larger motors/ generators or where there is less room available for routing cables.

many sizes are in stock or we can customize for your application.

Single or Dual elements are available. Use Dual elements where an increased level of monitoring is required or if there is a need for both on-site and remote temperature monitoring. RTD Company stator RTDs are built to meet the specifications of ANSI C50.10-1990, general requirements for synchronous motors.

FaQ
What is meant by the term calibration?
Calibration is the process of adjusting an instrument or measuring the deviation of a sensor so that the reading can be correlated to the actual value being measured. It is done by comparing the sensors output to a given standard to determine the exact error at any given temperature.

Stator Thermocouple
rEar EXiT, LaminaTEd

Class 400 Overview Stator winding Style Thermocouples

Stator winding style Thermocouples are rectangular, flat, laminated sensors commonly called Stator Sticks because they are inserted between the coils in the stator of a motor. These sensors are used in electric motors and generators for continuous sensing of the temperature and provide for consistent thermal monitoring without false alarms. RTD Company utilizes four standard thermocouple types; J (Iron), K (Nickel), T (Copper) and E (Chromel). The key difference between the RTD and the thermocouple stator winding style is that a thermocouple is point sensing only whereas the RTD senses temperature over its sensitive length.

FaQ
What is the reason for a grounded versus ungrounded junction?
If the concern is time response, the grounded junction is faster than ungrounded. If the machine/bearings they are installing the thermocouple into are electrically hot or have voltage, you would specify ungrounded to isolate the thermocouple from the machine and protect anyone who comes in contact with the leads or terminals.

when temperature increases, the voltage of a thermocouple also increases. Knowing the voltage of a thermocouple allows you to calculate the temperature.

Bearing RTD, Tip Sensitive with Flex Armored Sheath

adJUSTaBLE BayOnET HOLdEr

Class 313 Overview Bayonet Style Bearing probe rTds with Flex armored Sheath
Flex armor sheathed bearing RTDs are tip sensitive sensors in which the sensing element is encased in a copper alloy tip that is attached to a flex armor sheath. This allows for increased accuracy and sensitivity to temperature changes at the point of contact in bearings while providing greater mounting flexibility. Inserted at an opening on the bearing housing, they are used in electric motors and generators for continuous sensing of the bearings temperature. Bayonet mounting provides a simple and inexpensive spring loaded option for installing probes into solids when a fluid seal is not required. Includes a 1/8 NPT mounting adaptor for ease of locking the sensor in place. In this application the bayonet holder is fully adjustable over the entire specified L or immersion length. Note: this sensor is not for use in fluid applications.

Class 322

Surface Mount RTD, Polyimide/FEP Laminated

HEaVy dUTy, STaTOr windinGS

Class 322 Overview Surface mount rTds, polyimide/FEp Laminated

Polyimide/FEP laminated surface mount RTDs are flat, rigid, rectangular sensors with a wound element laminated between polyimide/FEP adhesive. The result is an extremely rugged design that can easily be inserted into the end turns of the windings of a motor or generator to provide additional protection against thermal overload. While primarily designed for use in motors or generators, they can also be used in other severe service temperature monitoring applications or in the field as a replacement for failed temperature sensors. Please note, these laminated surface mount RTDs are fairly rigid with minimal flexibility. If you need a sensor to conform to a round or uneven surface, consider our Class 320 or 327 surface mount RTDs laminated in silicone rubber.

Class 325 Overview Surface mount rTds, polyimide/FEp Laminate

Surface Mount style RTDs are flat, semi-flexible, rectangular sensors with a sensing element laminated in polyimide/FEP. They are used to monitor or measure temperature on round or uneven surfaces. Class 325 sensors provide averaging sensor capability for use in non-oil filled transformers. Traditionally, point type sensors have been used for transformer temperature monitoring. However, a single hot spot within the transformer could cause the transformer to shut down due to the temperature sensor picking up on this hot spot. This would be a false fault as the entire transformer is not over temperature, but just the one spot. Our Class 325 sensor eliminates the false faults by more accurately monitoring temperature rise. This will allow for more reliable operations while still insuring thermal protection. Consult factory for further assistance for your specific needs.

Heaters
Class 330
SUrFaCE mOUnT

Class 330 Overview Heaters

Heaters apply heat to the windings of motors, generators and auxiliary equipment primarily to prevent condensation from forming. In a motor, typically they are installed under the end turns or on the inside of the motor housing. By putting heat exactly where it is required, they can also provide resistance to temperature extremes, weathering, fungus growth or chemical attack. Heaters can be installed by using pressure sensitive adhesive, epoxy/cement or mechanical banding. RTD Company standard heaters are rated at 5 watts per square inch power density and are good for all purpose use. Consult factory for availability of additional sizes and power densities.

CaSE STyLES a, B, C and d

Class 315, 316, 317, 318 Overview Embedment rTds

Embedment sensors are miniature RTDs designed to be embedded into the bearings and housings of rotating machinery. They are used to detect temperature changes at the point of contact in bearings, oil, air, water and other process control applications. Monitoring the temperature of bearings or the lubricating oil can provide early warning of bearing failure. This early warning allows the machine to be shut down before serious damage can occur. The sensing element is installed in a small metal case. This allows for increased accuracy and sensitivity to temperature changes at the point of contact in bearings. In addition, these miniature sensors can be used anywhere space is limited and a hole can be drilled for placement.

Connection Heads
TErminaL BLOCK inCLUdEd

Class 690 Overview Connection Heads

Connection Heads are used to provide a way to connect the bearing sensor leads to the equipment that is used for monitoring or controlling the electrical motor or generator. The leads from the sensor are connected to a terminal block mounted inside the connection head. In turn, the wiring to the monitoring equipment is also connected to the terminal block and that allows for the signal to be read. Today, most modern monitoring equipment can take the signal directly from the sensor. However, some older equipment might have to utilize a transmitter to condition the signal so that it can be read. The transmitter can be mounted inside the connection head and would serve the same purpose as the terminal block but adds the signal conditioning. Connection heads are available in several different styles including small stainless steel, cast iron and aluminum.
