ESHM 2105: Public Health and Environment

Course Number: ESHM 2105 Course Title: Public Health and Environment Credit: 3 [3 hours per week for a period of 13 (3X13 hours) weeks] 1. Concept of health & diseases: The concept of Health, Factors affecting Health, The indices and evaluation of Health, Diseases, Diseases categories, disease triangles, Some terms-Endemic, Epidemic, Pandemic, Types of causes of Diseases, Recognise the changing pattern of Diseases in the developed and developing world. 2. Nutrition and Health: nutrition and infection, human nutritional requirements, growth, measuring body mass, recommended dietery intakes, disorders of malnutrition, diseases of over nutritions, nutrition monitoring and evaluations, nutritional problems in public health 3. Environment and Health: light, noise, radition, meteological environment, housing 4. Epidemiology: the epidemiology and natural history of infectious and non-infectious diseases, Dynamics of disease transmission, modes of transmission, susceptible host, host defenses 5. Community health: mental health, mental disability, oral health, physical disability, special group health needs ( prisionaers, migrants, homeless, refugees, milittary) 6. Microbial basis and cause - effect relationship of various tropical diseases. Vector borne diseases in tropics and their management. 7. environmental and occupational health: environmental issues, environmental epidemiology, environmental health targets and issues, 8. Organization of the public health system: public health System, essential public health services, non governmental role in public health Policy and Planning in Public health system; The Future of Public Health; 9. Emergency preparedness: institutional support for hazard assessment and disaster preparedness.

Concepts: Definition and Scope of public health, Community Medicine, Health and social Problems of Bangladesh and Healthcare in Bangladesh. Epidemiology: Concept and scopes of Epidemiological studies, Research Methodology (Epidemic investigation, Tools of epidemiological measurements; Morbidity and mortality measurement, Mode of transmission), Principles of control and natural history of diseases. Management of Public Health Diseases: EPI diseases(Diarrhoeal disease, Malaria, Kalajar, Enteric fever, Leprosy, Rabies, Viral hepatitis, Chicken pox, Mumps, Filariasis, Helminthes, STD and AIDS) and Common non-communicable diseases( Cancer, Diabetes, Hypertension, HID, RHD and Rheumatic Fever).

Health Education: Principles of Health Education, Methods and tools of Health Education, Health Education planning and management (Health hazards, Safe water, Community nutrition, Contraception and professional hygiene and sanitation). Clinical Entomology: Vectors of Medical importance, Role of Vectors causing diseases and Principles of vector control. Environmental Health: Definition and Scope of Environmental health, Impact of Environmental components (Water, air, soil) on health, Environmental health planning and management (Water pollution, water quality standard. Water borne disease, Biological process of septic tank, Air pollution, Green house effect and Hospital incineration. ) Occupational Health: Introduction, Occupational health hazards, Occupational diseases, Prevention of Occupational diseases. Primary Health Care (PHC): Concept and scope, Health for all, Definition of PHC, Principles, Components, strategy of PHC, National Health Programme, Essential service package, National and International health organizations and regulations.
