Part 1 Performance of Naval Destroyers circa 1900

A Naval engineer recorded RPM readings and Horsepower for necessary for 25 ship runs.
Further, he believes that when the hull is foul, more Horsepower will be needed to obtain a
given RPM level. Based on theoretical reasons, he feels the relationship is of the form:

HP = Foul + RPM +

Where HP = Collective Horsepower (100s), Foul = 1 if the hull was Foul, 0 otherwise, and RPM
is the total Revolutions per Minute (100s). The engineer believes is 3 based on theoretical
reasons, and that is positive.
Fit the Regression Model (Starting Values for all parameters can be 1)

The value of 2 is between Confidence Intervals ( 2.9246 and 3.3129) which means that we
should not reject the H0.
Test the hypothesis H0: = 0 versus HA: >0. Is the result consistent with his theory?

Give the predicted values for (Foul, 1), (Foul, 3), (Not Foul, 1), (Not Foul, 3).
Answer:
Using the below model, we have:
3.4713Foul+ 0.2468RPM(3.12)
(Foul, 1) = (1,1)
3.4713Foul + 0.2468RPM(3.12)
= 3.4713(1) + 0.2468(1)(3.12)
= 3.7181
(Foul,3) = (1,3)
3.4713Foul+ 0.2468RPM(3.12)
= 3.4713(1)+ 0.2468(3)(3.12)
= 11.07
(Not Foul,1)= (0,1)

3.4713Foul+ 0.2468RPM(3.12)
= 3.4713(0)+ 0.2468(1)(3.12)
=0.2468
(Not Foul, 3)= (0,3)
3.4713Foul+ 0.2468RPM(3.12)
= 3.4713(0)+ 0.2468(3)(3.12)
= 7.60

Part 2 Bird Species in Solomon Islands

A study looked at the relationship between:
S = # of Species living near sea-level on the individual islands of Solomon archipelago
A = Area in miles2
D = Distance from center of archipelago in miles (many have 0 for value)
The authors fit the model:
2
() = 0 + 1 log
()
3 4
Fit the regression model.
As a starting set of values, set all other s = 1.This is based on fitting a simple
linear regression between S and log(A) for the islands with D=0, to get starting values for and
. (Why?).
