Name: Roll No: Flow through Convergent Divergent Nozzle Aim:

M.Karthick AE12M009 2nd Group

To find the flow mach no along the length of Convergent Divergent Nozzle (shown in fig -1) for two different inlet pressures (Po = 25PSI and 20PSI) using static pressure measurement along the length of the nozzle. Description: The Convergent Divergent nozzle used for the experiment is shown in the figure -1. The cross section of the nozzle is rectangular. The length of the nozzle is 450mm. The breadth of the nozzle is 100mm. The throat area (A*) of the nozzle is 5000mm2(50mm X 100mm). The inlet area of the nozzle is (92mm X 100mm) 9200mm2. The exit area of the nozzle is (107mm X 100mm) 10700mm2. The C-D nozzle is designed for the mach number of 2.25. The inlet of the nozzle is connected to a settling chamber through a valve, in which the high pressure air is stored from the compressor.

Figure -1 Convergent Divergent Nozzle X-n (Locations where the static pressure probes are present is shown by dimensions. The dimensions are in mm). Measuring Instruments: The scanivalve disc type pressure transducer is used for the static pressure measurement along the length of the C-D nozzle. The pressure transducer has 50 ports and it can measure 4 ports/sec. 27 static pressure probes are used to measure the static pressure along the length of the nozzle. The static pressure probes are connected to the pressure transducer. Test Procedure: The high pressure stagnant (25PSI) air stored in the settling chamber is allowed to flow through the CD nozzle by opening the valve. The static pressures at various sections are sensed by the pressure transducer and recorded in the data acqution system. The settling chamber valve is closed after confirming the record. The procedure is repeated for stagnation pressure of 20PSI. Analysis and results: The static gauge pressures measured for the 25PSI stagnation pressure (Po) run have a gauge error of 0.068PSI. The error for the 20PSI stagnation pressure (Po)run is -0.069PSI. The reference atmospheric pressure is 14.5512PSI. 1

The gauge static pressures along the length of the nozzle for 25PSI stagnation pressure (Po) and 20PSI stagnation pressure (Po) is given in Table -1, columns 5 & 8 respectively. The mach number at the particular probe location of the nozzle is calculated using the one dimensional isentropic pressure relation. The theoretical mach number at the corresponding location is calculated using the one dimensional isentropic area relation. 1 2 1 = 1 + 2

Figure -2 shows the mach no. variation along the length of the nozzle for the two different stagnation pressures experimented along with the theoretical calculation. Figure -3 shows the pressure ratio variation (P/Po) along the length of the nozzle for the two different stagnation pressures experimented along with the theoretical calculation.
