THIS EXAMINATIONS QUESTIONS CONSISTS OF (

) PRINTED PAGES ONLY

SAB 4813/ SZW 4813 -1Q1. (a) With the aid of a proper sketch, describe the three types of surface dressing and discuss the condition under which each type will be constructed. (12 marks)

(b)

Loss of chipping and bleeding are the most common failures for surface dressing. Surface dressing fails for many reasons and most of the causes of failure can be controlled and avoided. Please discuss on the factors that could contribute to these failures. (13 marks)

Q2.

(a)

According to AASHTO method, there are nine inputs required to design the slab thickness of a concrete pavement. Discuss four of them and also include the effect of the inputs on the thickness of the slab. (12 marks)

SAB 4813/ SZW 4813 -2(b) A concrete pavement is being designed to last 20 years. During the first year, the estimated two- way equivalent are 105, 000. And the expected annual growth rate is 4%. The design reliability is 95% , and the overall standard deviation is 0.32. The loss of serviceability is 2.0. The pavement is to be laid on a granular subbase material. Using the standard laboratory tests on 28-day specimens, the average compressive strength is 4500 psi, and the average modulus of rupture for third-point loadings is 700 psi. The drainage was considered to be poor, and the pavement is expected to be subjected to moisturized levels approaching saturation 20% of the time. The pavement is to be designed with jointed reinforced concrete with dowels and untied asphalt shoulders. The effective modulus of subgrade reaction (corrected for loss of support) k= 150 pci. Determine the design thickness by the AASHTO method. Used the tables, charts and formulas given. Ec= 57, 000 (fc)0.5 T= [ (1+r)n 1 ] T1 r

T1= traffic volume during the first year r = rate of growth expressed as a fraction n= design period (years)

SAB 4813/ SZW 4813 -4Q3. (a) When considering design and construction of concrete block pavement, three types of interlock must be achieved in order to ensure its interlocking structure stability. With a proper sketch, compare these three different types of interlock. (13 marks)

(b)

Discuss the effect of the following factors on the performance of concrete block pavement. (i) (ii) (iii) block shape block thickness laying pattern

(12 marks)

SAB 4813/ SZW 4813 -5Q4. (a) Draw a schematic diagram of the weight-volume of hot mix asphalt mixture. From this diagram explain the terms Voids in Total Mix (VTM), Voids in Mineral Aggregate (VMA), and Voids Filled with Asphalt (VFA) and derive the formulas. What are the reasonable values for VTM, VMA, and VFA for dense-graded mix? Explain what problems may occur if the value for each of these properties is higher or lower than the reasonable range.

(15 marks)

(b)

Discuss Stone Mastic Asphalt and Porous Asphalt in terms of gradation, voids, advantage(s) and disadvantage(s).
