Purina WellSolve WC. It has 900 calories per pound versus the 1500 calories per pound of the
Strategy.

It's not terribly difficult to find out calories/lb...Purina got back to me in less than a day.

Compare with feeding directions on the feed tag and determine if the amount being fed is adequate for the
situation. Horses should be eating a minimum of 1.0 pounds of hay per 100 pounds of body weight (10
pounds of hay for a 1000 pound horse). Horses will very often not eat all of their hay when the hay quality is
poor, so be sure to weigh the amount horses are actually eating, not just what may be offered. If the hay
quality is low or the horse isnt eating at least the minimum amount, an alternative hay source needs to be
located or be replaced with a bagged complete feed/hay stretcher that includes adequate fiber to replace
hay. If the horse is out on pasture, the pasture needs to be evaluated to determine if it is truly grazing,
providing nutrition, or is it just a place to hang out and nibble around. Pastures can have a green color to
them but be weeds or poor quality grasses and not provide adequate nutrition to sustain horses in good
shape. Pasture quality and nutritional values vary significantly depending on fertilization and many other
pasture management and weather-related factors. On average, due to the higher water content of pasture,
horses must eat 30 40 lbs of fresh pasture to equal the dry matter intake of 10 lbs of hay. Pastures
generally should be at least 3 4 inches tall to provide sufficient grazing to supply adequate fiber and
nutrition.
An average 1100 pound horse at maintenance requires 16,700 calories per day. This can be achieved by
something as simple as 15 20 pounds of hay and 1 2 pounds of Purina Natures Essentials Enrich
32. As the level of activity or individual metabolism of the horse increases, it becomes necessary to

choose a feed that will provide adequate calories when fed with the available hay or pasture that will
maintain good condition.
Most people are not very accurate when estimating amounts of hay and grain being fed. For
example, a three-pound coffee can holds three pounds of coffee, but it will hold four pounds of
Purina Strategy Professional Formula. The weight of oats can vary quite a bit depending on the
quality of the oats, so a three-pound coffee can may hold from 2.5 4.25 pounds of oats. Hay
weight can vary quit a bit as well so, when possible, hay should be purchased by the ton instead of
by the bale. Hay that costs $10 per bale and weighs 65 pounds per bale is a better value than hay
that costs $8 per bale but weighs only 45 pounds per bale. If you are feeding 20 pounds of hay per
day, the hay that costs $10 per bale calculates out to $3.08 per day while 20 pounds from the $8
bale of hay ends up costing $3.54 per day. Also, two flakes from the heavier bale will often weigh
more than two flakes from the lighter bale so your actual feeding rates may vary as well. Weighing
a few representative flakes from hay when you first buy it can help keep your feeding rates more
consistent and your hay costs more under control. Moderate quality alfalfa, 16% or less protein,
actually may be a lower feed value than good quality grass, 11% or more protein. The moderate
quality alfalfa is usually very mature and lower in digestibility whereas the higher quality grass hay
is more digestible and palatable to the horse. A hay test can be a useful tool to help determine the
best feeding value in hay.

NOTE: All values are measured in ( lb / horse / day )

Instructions:
1.
Select a lifestyle and weight of horse. (Note: Weights will change based on the lifestyle selected)
2.

Read daily calorie requirement in upper left window.

3.
If little or no quality hay/pasture is available, choose from one of the complete feeds in the upper
row, and feed as recommended.
4.
When feeding hay, refer to daily hay requirement in the lower left corner, and choose from the
concentrate feeds in the lower row. If feeding more than the suggested amount of hay or horse is grazing
unlimited pasture, then reduce the recommended amount of concentrate feed. If the amount of feed to
maintain body condition is below 0.3 lbs per 100 lbs of body weight per day (3 lbs for a 1000 lb horse; 3.3
lbs for a 1100 lb horse), Nature's Essentials Enrich 32 or Enrich 12 would be a more appropriate choice.
5.
Feeding rates recommended for concentrate feeds are based on feeding with good quality grass
hay. If using good quality alfalfa hay, reduce the amount of Purina feed recommended by 1/2 to 1 lb/day.
