APPLYING DIENES THEORY TO INTRODUCE THE ADDITION CONCEPT FOR KID


The purpose is students can understand concept balance of addition in order they can solve the problem. Problem is

Teacher designs the class to be pair group. Teacher applies Diense theory to introduce addition concept. 1. FREE PLAY Each groups get one scale and a lot of varieties weight of cubes that the weight is shown in the side of cube in kilogram.

Teacher introduces the about the weight of cubes are different based on number that are shown in the side of cube, teacher also give information that the weight of cubes is in kilogram. Teacher gives free and trial time for students to do activity about playing the scale and cubes. (5 minutes) 2. GAMES Teacher gives some role for a game, named BALANCING
SCALE.

The roles are:

Every group just has a scale, two brown cubes, a red cube, a green cube, a light blue cube, a pink cube, a yellow cube and a dark blue cube.

The students first challenging is to make the scale to be balance when the bowl is filled by cubes.

The requirement, students are just allowed to put two cubes into left bowl and put a cube into right bowl.

Second challenging is find as much as students can the possibilities that scale to be balance when the cubes put into the bowl.

Students should write their finding to make the scale is balance. Teacher gives limitation time about 15 minutes.

3. SEARCH FOR COMMUNALITIES

In this stage is time for students to shared with their pair and finding the solution of challenging until the condition of scale is balance like the picture above. 4. REPRESENTATION This stage, students should present what they find during the experiment with their pair.

The expectation is they can present that the condition can make the scale to be balance are: LEFT BOWL 1 RIGHT BOWL 1

(15 minutes) 5. SYMBOLIZATION

Students are introduced the symbol of addition (+). Then from the data of experiment, students transform the data into addition concept.

1+0=1 1+1=2 1+3=4 1+4=5 1+5=6 1+6=7 2+3=5 2+4=6 2+5=7

(10 minutes) 6. FORMALIZATION (15 minutes) Therefore, the addition concept is to make balance the right and left hand side on equality. If there is problem related with addition of equality, then students can apply balance system from what students have learned. The problem:
