RESEARCH PROPOSAL Research Area: Data Mining In Healthcare Topic: Length of Stay (LOS) 2.1 Objective Objective of my research is to use collective intelligence of various data mining and machine learning approaches to increase the predictive power of patients LOS in hospitals. In addition to this my research will propose an algorithm / system for clinical decision support with computer-based patient records that could predict LOS of a patient for a specified disease and the estimated LOS will be superior in terms of predictive accuracy, reduced medical errors, enhanced patient safety & care, decrease unwanted practice variations, and improve patient care. 2.2 Motivation The expected length of time, that patient spends in a hospital to diagnose their ill condition is LOS. The length of an inpatients stay has direct significant impact on patient-care costs, service quality, and diagnosis procedures. Despite attempts to manage the length of stay (LOS) for frequently performed surgical procedures, many service providers cannot achieve the target range allowed by the managed care system. LOS prediction is useful in case of long term stay. In long term stay a lot of threatening related to recovery of disease (which are unwanted) can occur like: in Ostomy surgical case patient is always worried about, functioning of the intestine, and separation of stomas on the abdominal wall. During the hospital stay, the patient and his or her caregivers always get stress that how much time the surgery / disease will take to recover. In this case LOS prediction will provide ill managed stay in the hospital. The doctor and patient should be aware of problems which are related to surgery, its complications, its recovery, and its LOS. In this way LOS will help in managed ill care system. Currently, Clinical decisions are often made based on doctors intuition and experience rather than on the knowledge rich data hidden in the databases. This practice 2|Page Research Proposal On Length of Stay

leads to unwanted biases, errors and excessive medical costs which affects the quality of service provided to patients. (like: how much cost that has to pay for the disease diagnosis, prior knowledge of diagnosis procedures, hospitals inpatients stay) Followings are the benefits of research Doctors to give better prescription and advice to their patients. Helpful for monitoring patients health and related services. Hospitals resource management Better treatment for chronic diseases Prior knowledge of hospital stay Cost that has to pay for diagnosis / recovery 3. Research Questions What are the factors / input parameters that can improve predictive power of LOS? What are the parameters that can compare evaluated approach to the existing one? Means to decide the granular criteria of the approach. How to evaluate the accuracy of the results obtained? What are various Data Mining and Machine Intelligence techniques that can be use for LOS prediction? Is the proposed solution of LOS prediction work for various diseases? 4. Current Status of Progress Till now I reviewed various papers which are related to IEEE Transactions on information technology in Biomedicine, IEEE Conference (Intelligent Systems), IEEE Conference (Management and Service Science), Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences and J Korean Med Science. I critically analyzed the papers on the basis of following criteria Identification & formulation of problem related to the paper Obtained result (technique used in the paper) Strength & weakness of the technique used in the paper 3|Page Research Proposal On Length of Stay

Comparison (if any) in the paper 5. Proposed work plan for one year: Followings are the work and plan for my one year research in ordered way An exhaustive study has to perform on various DM and Machine Intelligence Techniques that could give more optimize and accurate prediction of LOS. After study it has to analyze that the approach is feasible for LOS prediction or not. Data Collection is important, in my approach I will use real data set for LOS prediction and it has to collect from various hospitals. Collected data will be a raw data, so preprocessing (to prepare it for procedure) is to be done according to approach. Parameter has to identify on which accurate LOS prediction can be done. Implementation has to perform to predict LOS using Naive Bayes, Neural Network and Support Vector Machines. Comparison and analysis has to perform in terms of prediction accuracy of above three approaches.
