Television Brings Bad Effects to Us Television has turn out to be a thing that should be owned in every home and is an inescapable part of modern culture today. Peoples believe that with the recent blast in satellite and digital specialty channels, everyone now can access to a plethora inappropriate television content. Therefore, the television has been accused to bring many harmful effects to many people. But, there are also some people who think that television brings good effects to them. Regardless the public perception, I still believe that if the television is used wisely, it will pose many benefits to us and thus, I strongly disagree that television brings bad effects to us. In 1928, John Logie Baird had discovered television. Since that, television set has become a great and powerful invention. According to the A.C. Nielsen Co., the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day or 28 hours per week or 2 months of nonstop TV-watching per year. In a 65-year life, that person will have spent 9 years glued to the tube. For that, it was said that the television has the potential to estrange, dissocialize, to promote aggressive and negative behaviors, provide negative and inappropriate role models to our children and to create negative values such as values of consumption and possession. These bad thoughts may be true but we should be wise enough to distinguish what is good or bad for ourselves as we have been blessed with the perfect mind by God. Television is good as it can act as a medium of exchange and sharing of experiences and knowledge, it helps in building a good family relationship and also helps in developing a healthy social life. The first reason why television is beneficial to our life is because television is a medium of exchange and sharing of experiences and knowledge between peoples. News, current events and historical programming can help the young people to be more aware of other cultures and people. These cultural aspects include dances, foods, festivals and traditional games. Documentaries as well can assist in developing critical thinking about civilization and the globe. Critical thinking is a part of the education process and it clarifies goals, examines assumptions, discerns hidden values, evaluates

evidence, and accomplishes actions and assesses conclusions. Great television program can teach peoples the vital values and the life lessons like agility, benevolence, camaraderie, devotion and exuberance. Television will also help in introducing the music and art for young people. Secondly, television will help in building a good family relationship in our society as shared viewing gives family members of all ages an opportunity to spend time together especially if the parents are both working and rarely have time for their children. Typically, the weekend will be the most suitable time to be benefited with the family to watch their favourite shows together. Television can be further used by parents as a catalyst to get kids reading. This can be done by following up on televisions programs by getting books on the same subjects or reading authors whose work was adapted for the programs. The controversial or sensitive issues that often been exposed by the television programs will make it easier for parents and kids to discuss them and this will strengthen the relationship between the parents and children all at once. Finally, television will help in developing a healthy social life. Educational programming can develop young peoples socialization and learning skills. Examples of socialization skills are greeting, introducing someone, handling anger, making requests, responding to requests, general social responses, mealtime and restaurant etiquette, personal hygiene and grooming, respecting others property, respecting social boundaries, touching and private topics. While, learning skills include the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. All of these skills can be learned indirectly from the programs aired on the television especially from the shows that portrays about the true story that happened in our surroundings. Watching television can also improve our language ability especially when we are watching the shows that used a standard language. We can also learn about other languages from the television programs such as Indonesian, Philippines, Korean, Japanese and Mandarin languages. Knowing others languages will enhance our travel and social experiences, enables us to join the global community and will enables us to share our thoughts with the world. Our vocabulary will also be enhanced when we learn about others languages.

In brief, watching television will never affect us badly unless we used it in an inappropriate way. We, as the civilized peoples should change our mindset if we want to have a better life and for that, we need to bear in our mind that not all technologies that have been invented will cause our eastern cultures disappeared and be forgotten by our future generations. Thus, I conclude by decisively saying that television does not bring bad effects to us. (811 words)
