ASTRA MISSILE From May 2011, the Astra missile is undergoing developmental trials, India successfully testfired its

indigenously developed Astra air-to-air interceptor missile from a defence base in Odisha for the third time within a week. The beyond-visual-range missile was tested from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, about 230 km from here. The missile intercepted a simulated target. Astra is an active radar homing beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), India. Astra is designed to be capable of engaging targets at varying range and altitudes allowing for engagement of both short-range targets (up to 20 km) and long-range targets (up to 80 km) using alternative propulsion modes. The missile guidance is provided by a terminal active radar-seeker and an updated midcourse internal guidance system, which locates and tracks targets. It is 3.8 metres long and is narrower in front of the wings. The propellant used is HTPB (Hydroxy-Terminated Polybutadiene, solid-fuel). The warhead is a 15 kg HE (high-explosive) which is activated by a proximity fuse. The missile's maximum speed is 4780 Km/h and can attain maximum altitude of 20 km. The missile can handle 40 g turns near sea level while attacking a manoeuvring target. INDEGENOUS MISSILES OF INDIA Agni I is a Medium Range Ballistic Missile manufactured by DRDO and Bharath Dynamics limited with a unit cost of 250-350 million INR .It has a weight of 12000 kgs. It has a single stage engine with a operational range 700 to 1250 kms and flight altitude of 200 kms. The 15 metre tall Agni-1 missile, weighing about 12 tonnes, is capable of carrying both conventional as well as nuclear warheads of 1,000 kg.The speed of Agni 1 is 2.5 kmps Agni II is a medium Range Ballistic Missile manufactured by DRDO and Bharath Dynamics limited with a unit cost of 250-350 million INR .It has a weight of 16000 kgs. It has a Twoand-half-stage solid propellant engine .The operational range is 2,0003,000 km and flight altitude is 230 kms. The 21 metre tall Agni-II missile, has pay load of of 1,000 kg.The speed of Agni 2 is 3.9 km/s Agni III is a Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile manufactured by DRDO and Bharath Dynamics limited with a unit cost of 25- 35 crores .It has a weight of 48000 kgs. It has a Two stage solid propellant engine .The operational range is 3,500 km - 5,000 km and flight altitude is more than 450 km. The 17 metre tall Agni-III missile, has pay load of of 1,000 kg.The speed of Agni 3 is 5-6 km/s Prithvi I is a surface-to-surface missile having a maximum warhead mounting capability of 1,000 kg, with a range of 150 km. It has an accuracy of 10 50 metres and can be launched from Transporter erector launchers. This class of Prithvi missile was inducted into the Indian Army in 1994. Prithvi II class is also a single stage liquid-fuelled missile having a maximum warhead mounting capability of 1000 kg, but with an extended range of 350 kilometres. The missile has the features to deceive Anti Ballistic Missiles. Prithvi III class (codenamed Dhanush meaning Bow) is a two-stage ship-to-surface missile. The first stage is solid fuelled with a 16 metric ton force(157 kN) thrust motor. The

second stage is liquid fuelled. The missile can carry a 1,000 kg warhead to a distance of 350 km and a 500 kg warhead to a distance of 600 kilometres and a 250 kilogram warhead up to a distance of 750 kilometres. Dhanush is a system consisting of a stabilization platform (Bow) and the Missile (Arrow). Supposedly it is a customised version of the Prithvi and that the additional customizations in missile configuration is to certify it for sea worthiness. Dhanush has to be launched from a hydraulically stabilized launch pad. Its low range acts against it and thus it is seen a weapons either to be used to destroy an aircraft carrier or an enemy port. Nirbhay is a long range, subsonic cruise missile being developed in India. The missile will have a range of 1,000 km and will arm three services, the Indian Army, Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force. The Nirbhay will be able to be launched from multiple platforms on land, sea and air. The first test flight of the missile is expected in the year 2012. Nirbhay will be a terrain hugging, stealth missile capable of delivering 24 different types of warheads depending on mission requirements and will use inertial navigation system for guidance.[59] There are plans to arm the IL-76MDs with the aerial version of the missile. The Shaurya missile is a canister launched hypersonic surface-tosurface tactical missile developed by the IndianDefence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) for use by the Indian Armed Forces. It has a range of between 750 to 1900 km[5] and is capable of carrying a payload of one ton conventional or nuclear warhead. It gives the potential to strike in the short-intermediate range against any adversary Sagarika is a nuclear capable submarine-launched ballistic missile with a range of 750 km. This missile has a length of 8.5 meters, weighs seven tonnes and can carry a pay load of up to 500 kg. MISSILES ON JOINT VENTURES USED BY INDIA Brahmos I (The name BrahMos is a portmanteau formed from the names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia) is a stealth supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land. It is a joint venture between Republic of India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russian Federation's NPO Mashinostroeyenia who have together formed BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited. BrahMos claims to have the capability of attacking surface targets by flying as low as 10 metres in altitude. It can gain a speed of Mach 2.8, and has a maximum range of 290 km.[1] The ship-launched and land-based missiles can carry a 200 kg warhead, whereas the aircraft-launched variant (BrahMos A) can carry a 300 kg warhead. It has a two-stage propulsion system, with a solid-propellant rocket for initial acceleration and a liquid-fuelled ramjet responsible for sustained supersonic cruise. Airbreathing ramjet propulsion is much more fuel-efficient than rocket propulsion, giving the BrahMos a longer range than a pure rocket-powered missile would achieve. P-70 Ametist was an anti-shipping missile carried by Soviet and Indian Charlie-I submarines, as well as the Soviet Papa class submarine. It has a weight of 3500 kgs. The operational range is 3,500 km - 5,000 km and flight altitude is more than 450 km. The 17 metre tall Agni-III missile, has pay load of of 1,000 kg. The speed of Agni 3 is 5-6 km/s

The P-270 Moskit is a Russian supersonic ramjet powered cruise missile capable of being launched from land and ships. India has most probably bought both land and ship variants which have a range of 120 km. India bought around 200 Klub missiles and now it is believed that the Moskit have been kept in reserve but can still be used.
