Inside out Summary of the changes in the PMBOK Guide 5th edition (15/15)
By Andreas Heilwagen on January 14th, 2013
If PMI sticks to its plan, we are only two weeks away from the release of the printed version of the new PMBOK Guide 5th edition. As a PMI member you should be able to access the PDF version since the 27th of December already. Newbie Disclaimer For those who do not know the game: the PMI is the leading project management organization in the world and is well-known for the PMBOK Guide, an official ANSI standard and the most important PM standard in the world. There are also other PMI standards as shown above and of course a single international PM standard (ISO 21500) and loads of national standards. But a new edition of the PMBOK Guide is always worth a look.

Major Changes
1. ANSI/PMI standard 99-001-2013 The process diagram collection from the 3rd chapter has been moved to the appendix to create The standard of project management for a project. This allows the schoolbook and standard parts of the guide to develop separately. 2. Maturity A lot of text has been rewritten to provide alignment with the other PMI standards, explain topics more precisely and include practical advice from project management reality. 3. Agile Failure Although some work has been done on life cycles, the new guide is not suited for agile projects. This may change with the Software Extension to the guide which is currently under review. 4. New knowledge area The communications management knowledge area has been split to create the stakeholder management knowledge area. This should have been done for the 4th edition already, but the increasing importance of stakeholder management came a bit late into the minds of those who where responsible. 5. New concepts a. Business Value is completely new (chapter 1). b. Projects can now be terminated prematurely (chapter 3).
