Experiment 1

The Effect of acid solutions to the color of litmus paper Purpose : To investigate the effect of acid solutionss to the color of litmus papers. Equipments and materials : Red and blue litmus paper Pipette Well plate Nitric acid solution Sulfuric acid solution Acetic acid solution Oxalic acid solution

Procedure 1. Place 2 drops of nitric acid solution in a well in the well plate 2. Immerse a piece of red litmus paper (about 1,5 cm lenght) into to the solution and record your observation in the below table. Repeat your experiment using blue litmus paper 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 using other acid solutions.

Result Solution Nitric Acid solution Sulfuric acid solution Acetic acid solution Oxalic acid solution Chemical Formula HNO H2SO4 CH3COOH C2SO4 Changing color of red litmus paper Not Change Not Change Not Change Not Change Changing color of blue litmus paper Change Change Change Change

Experiment 2 : The Effect of base solutions to the color of litmus paper Purpose : To investigate the effect of base solutionss to the color of litmus papers. Equipments and materials : Red and blue litmus paper Pipette Well plate Sodium hydroxide Ammonia solution barium hydroxide

Procedure 1. Place 2 drops of spdium hydroxide in a well in the well plate 2. Immerse a piece of red blue paper (about 1,5 cm lenght) into to the solution and record your observation in the below table. Repeat your experiment using blue litmus paper 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 using other acid solutions.

Result Solution Sodium hydroxide Ammonia solution barium hydroxide Chemical Formula NaOH NH3 Ba(OH)2 Changing color of red litmus paper Change to be blue Change to be blue Change to be blue Changing color of blue litmus paper Not Change Not Change Not Change

Experiment 3 : Testing acid and base with litmus paper Purpose : To test the acid or base in some solutions Equipments and materials : Red and blue litmus paper Pipette Well plate Tap water Distillated water Soap water Orange juice

Procedure 1. Prepare a few pieces of red and blue litmus paper 2. Prepare solutions as listed in the table below. ( Add more solutions according to your curriosly) 3. Take the first solution. Place the red and blue litmus paper in two different watch glasses and then add a small amount of the solution. Observe and note down the change o color 4. Based on the change of color, determine whether the solution is acidic, basic, or neutral 5. Repeat this activity for the other solutions Result Solution Tap water Distillated water Soap water Orange juice Change of color Red Litmus Not Change Not Change Change to be blue Not change Blue litmus Not change Not change Not change Change to be red Is the solution acidic, basic or neutral ? Neutral Neutral Base Acid

Experiment 4 : Measuring the pH of salt solutions Purpose : To investigate the pH o salt solution. Equipments and materials : HCl 0,1 M NaOH 0,1 M NH3 0,1 M CH3COOH 0,1 M Tube glass Universal indicator of paper pH meter Pipette

Procedure 1. Prepare the following solutions: 0.1 M HCl, 0.1 M NaOH, 0.1 M NH3, 0,1 M CH3COOH 2. Mix 1 mL of the HCl solution and 1 mL of the NaOH solution 3. Measure the pH of the solution using unversal indicator papers or a pH meter 4. Repeat the experiment using a different mixture as shown below

Result Experiment 1 2 3 4 Acid Solution 0.1 M HCl 0.1 M HCl 0,1 M CH3COOH 0,1 M CH3COOH Base Solution 0.1 M NaOH 0.1 M NH3 0.1 M NaOH 0.1 M NH3 pH of solution
