ASSIGNMENT # 1 ASSIGNMENT DATE: 01 02 2012 LAST DATE FOR SUBMISSION: 12 02 2012

Note: Part A is mandatory for all students. Part B shall be answered by the students as indicated PART A Common to all students 1. A 1000 KVA, 6600/440 V, 50 Hz, 3 phase, delta/star, core type oil immersed natural cooled transformer has the following design data: Centre to centre distance of adjacent limbs = 47 cm; Outer diameter of HV winding = 44 cm; Height of frame = 124 cm; Core loss = 3.7 KW; Full load copper loss = 10.5 KW; Average temperature rise of oil should not exceed 350 C; Specific heat dissipation from tank walls = 6 W/m2 and 6.5 W/m2 due to radiation and convection respectively; Assume that convection is improved by 35% due to tubes. 2. Design a suitable tank and no. of tubes required. A 300 KVA, 6600/400 V, 50 Hz, 3 phase, delta/star, core type transformer has the following design data: Outer diameter of HV winding = 36 cm; Inner diameter of HV winding = 29 cm; Cross section of HV conductors = 5.4 mm2; Outer diameter of LV winding = 26 cm; Inner diameter of LV winding = 22 cm; Cross section of LV conductors = 170 mm 2; Length of coils = 50 cm; Voltage per turn = 8; Resistivity of conductors = 2 -cm. Calculate full load copper loss and % voltage regulation at full load 0.8 pf lagging. 3. A 15 MVA, 33/6.6 KV, 50 Hz, 3 phase, star/delta, core type transformer has the following design data: Net area of each limb = 15 cm2; Net area of each yoke = 18 cm2; Mean length of flux path = 2.3 m per limb and 1.6 m per yoke; No. of turns of HV winding = 450; Calculate the no load current. Use the following data of transformer steel: Bmax (Wb/m2) MMF (AT/m) Iron loss (Watts/Kg) 0.9 130 0.8 1.0 200 1.3 1.2 420 1.9 1.3 660 2.4
