3 skeins Gedifra Cashmerino (58% merino wool, 30% acrylic, 12% superwash cashmere; 146yds/135m per 1.75oz/50g ball), shown in color #1446
Note: This pattern looks best if it is aggressively blocked open to highlight the cables and reduce the fabric's natural tendency to curl. When choosing a substitute yarn, make sure to choose one that can be blocked; yarns with a higher percent of acrylic may not work well for this pattern.

Achernar has three sections: four set up rows; the main body of the scarf, which consists of alternating stretches of Pattern A and Pattern B; and five end rows.
set up rows
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Cast on 43 stitches. (RS) Slip the first stitch knitwise, then [p1, k1] to the end. (WS) Slip the first stitch purlwise, then *[k1, p1] twice, m1, k1, p1, k1, p1. Repeat from * until 2 sts remain, k1, p1. Slip the first stitch knitwise, then p1, *k1, p1, T2F, T2B, p1, k1, p1. Repeat from * until last stitch, k1. Slip the first stitch purlwise, then knit the knits and purl the purls as they face you.
Work 5 repeats of Pattern A. Work 4 repeats of Pattern B. Repeat steps 6-7 5 more times, or until scarf is approx. 4.5in/11.25cm shorter than desired length. Work 5 repeats of Pattern A.

10. (RS) Slip the first stitch knitwise, then p1, *k1, p2, C2B, p2, k1, p1. Repeat from * until last stitch, p1. 11. (WS) Slip the first stitch purlwise, then knit the knits and purl the purls as they face you.

12. Slip the first stitch knitwise, then p1, *k1, p1, T2B, T2F, p1, k1, p1. Repeat from * until last stitch, k1. 13. Slip the first stitch purlwise, then *k1, p1, k1, p2tog, [k1, p1] twice. Repeat from * until 2 sts remain, k1, p1. 14. Slip the first stitch knitwise, then [p1, k1] to the end. At the same time, bind off.

15. If desired, add fringe. 16. Wash and block the scarf. Be sure to block aggressively and pin the scarf to approx. 6in/15cm wide in order to open up the cable pattern and stop the scarf from curling.

Rows 2, 4, 6, and 8 (WS): Slip the first stitch purlwise, then knit the knits and purl the purls as they face you. Row 3: Row 5: Row 7: Slip the first stitch knitwise, then p1, *[T2F, T2B] twice, p1. Repeat from * until last stitch, k1. Slip the first stitch knitwise, then p1, *p1, [C2F, p2] twice. Repeat from * until last stitch, k1. Slip the first stitch knitwise, then p1, *[T2B, T2F] twice, p1. Repeat from * until last stitch, k1.
Repeat rows 1-8 4 more times (40 rows total) before moving on to Pattern B or the end rows.

Row 1 (RS): Slip the first stitch knitwise, then p1, k1, *p2, C2B, p2, C3B. Repeat from * 3 more times, then p2, C2B, p2, k1, p1, k1. Rows 2-8: Work the same as rows 2-8 of Pattern A.
Repeat rows 1-8 3 more times (32 rows total) before returning to Pattern A.
