Relentless drive towards LTE

q Approx 40% of all phones sold in Q3 2012 were smartphones, and the growth of smartphone data traffic is expected to exceed the overall average q Mobile data traffic doubled between Q3 2011 and Q3 2012, and is expected to grow 12x between 2012 -2018, driven mainly by video

q Online video is the biggest contributor to mobile traffic volumes, constituting 25 percent of total
smartphone traffic and 40 percent of total tablet traffic

q Total mobile subscriptions are expected to reach 6.6 billion in 2012 and 9.3 billion in 2018
q There were an additional 13 million LTE subscriptions in Q3 2012, and numbers are predicted to reach 1.6 billion by 2018 Mobile broadband subscriptions have grown by around 55% YoY and now reached > 1.4 billion LTE is now growing strongly, with 13 million new subs added in Q3 2012 GSM/EDGE added c. 20 million and WCDMA/HSPA c. 65 million

Drivers for LTE deployment q The primary drive towards LTE comes from the need for network capacity, performance management and efficiency q Opportunities for new products/services q Opportunities for revenue growth q LTE could be a tool to charge more for mobile data q much faster uplink q lower latency q some new video-based services might only be possible using LTE
LTE is currently being deployed and built-out in all regions and will reach around 1.6 billion subscriptions in 2018 By mid-2012, LTE was estimated to cover 455 million people globally and by 2017 it is expected to cover around 50% of the worlds population

Introduction
In the Evolution to LTE report, GSA presents the current situation based on GSAs current research, to provide the industry with facts and analysis about the global status and growth of mobile broadband enabled by LTE. The Evolution to LTE report is regularly updated and may be downloaded by any registered user of the GSA website. Information is provided about the LTE system both for FDD and TDD modes, technical standards, operator investments and commitments including listings of all network deployments, studies and trials, commercial service launches (see GSAs definition of commercial launch below), and regulatory developments including spectrum supporting LTE-enabled mobile broadband service network deployments. Details are also provided about LTE user devices which are announced by manufacturers. Information for the production of this report was obtained in several ways, including from regular information exchanges and direct contacts by GSA with senior management in network operator organizations, regulatory authorities, suppliers and other stakeholders. This is in addition to consideration and analysis of public statements where appropriate e.g. company press releases and briefings, in order to establish the facts as accurately as possible and ensure that this report reflects the true LTE mobile broadband market situation. Comments about the report including news/updates should be sent to email info@gsacom.com GSA provides additional LTE-related resources to complement this report, including various maps and charts, which can be downloaded by registered site users at www.gsacom.com/news/statistics.php4 Selected charts and maps are also available as PDF files see the relevant links on our home page www.gsacom.com Readers may also download these related reports: Status of the LTE Ecosystem report Status of the Global LTE TDD Market report Status of the Global LTE1800 Market report
