Cast Iron Cookware, Country Ham, Folk Art & Crafts of the Smoky Mountains

Here at the Appalachian Traveller's worldwide web site you'll find a few tall tales, a wealth of information on mountain life, and an opportunity to acquire a genuine piece of American Folk Art. So, sit back, kick your shoes off, and "surf a spell" . . .

Folk Art & Crafts

Enjoy Appalachian Traveller's collection of American Folk Art, hand crafted Bird Houses and Feeders, and Folk Art & Crafts. We feature handcrafted Step Stools and bedside keepsake boxes and other woodcrafts by gifted Appalachian artisans from the Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains. Visit our Bluebird site for information on attracting bluebirds to your backyard or to purchase our deluxe bluebird house featured in Southern Living magazine. Our Bird Houses and Feederssection also features one of a kinds like our brown bat house, wren house, personalized birdfeeder plus our patented chipmunk feeder. The Smoky Mountains play host to over 500 black bear, a few in the Park and the rest roaming the foothills around the orchards and campgrounds surrounding the reserve. It's not uncommon to see a bear around here, but if you do, keep your distance - what may appear as a cuddly fur ball, is actually 200-300 lbs. of wild animal, packing sharp teeth and claws. Woodworkers carve Chainsaw Bears of black bears freehand from memory out of a solid trunk of tree. Each artist has his or her technique, identifiable to those who collect them. Here's a few more of the featured arts and crafts. . .

Attracting Birds to your Home or Garden

Made in the USA

All handcrafted in the US, these bird houses and bird feeders will make a wonderful addition to your wildlife sanctuary. Choose from artfully designed bird houses and bird feeders, butterfly and bat houses, a flying squirrel house, and our patented chipmunk feeder! The bird houses we make from old barnwood are special and will look great in your garden or on a back porch. Handcrfafted from 100 year old red oak tobacco barn wood and capped with a metal roof, our styles mirror the style of barns built in the Appalachians. We have a gambrel roof barn with optional divided sides (each hole is a compartment), a horse barn with three compartments, a barn with a cupula, and one with silo. Our Little Brown Bat box, specifically engineered for warm climate bats, is made from western cedar for long lasting use. Traditionally, bats have roosted in trees and caves; they have adapted to living in bat houses, because fewer trees and caves are available to them. Ventilation has been provided for southern climates, caulk the width spanning 1/4 inch slot for northern locations. Our bat houses are

ready to mount utilizing a pre-drilled keyhole slot in the back and anchor holes. We've roughened up the inside giving extra traction for a non-slip foothold inside, and added grooves on the landing area for extra grip, especially important to fledging pups. Our deluxe bluebird house featured in Southern Living magazine is specifically engineered for Eastern and Western bluebirds and is made from western cedar for long lasting use. The houses come with an easy to open side cleanout plus a plexiglass viewing window. Ready to mount utilizing a pre-drilled keyhole slot in the back and anchor holes, they are easy to hang and remove. Our slotted predator guard and 1 and 1/2 inch hole will help bluebirds re-populate your neighborhood! Feed the chipmunks while keeping the food away from squirells with our unique chipmunk feeder! Our handcrafted bird houses and feeding stations are solidly crafted using weather and insect resistant western cedar or 100 year old red oak. Made to last, the houses have large holes for most birds, plus clean outs for removing last year's nest.

Folk Art and Crafts

The Appalachian cabin of yore was a 16 x 20 foot windowless room decorated with a fireplace at one end, a crudely fashioned table, nail less chairs or puncheon stools, home made candles for light, a spinning wheel for making thread, and maybe a quilting frame, some pottery, and some baskets for gathering vegetables in the garden. A bed frame, "stitched" with taut rope that held a mattress of straw, was a "modern day" convenience that gave us the saying "Sleep tight, and don't let the bed bugs bite." (Probably a bigger summer problem than winter.) Today's cozy homes and cabins are made that more decorative with hand-crafted furniture and accessories from the past. Of course we've put our own finishing touches to yesteryear's improvisations.
