Psalm 20

January 23, 2013

This sermon is a barebones outline meant to provide encouragement to our church after two back-to-back tragedies.
This is a Psalm asking for victory for the king in war. Its also a song the church can sing about Christ. Its not hard to apply it individually as we all fight spiritual battles and have many enemies. The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; Jesus had days full of trouble, but He was heard and so will we be. What a comfort to know that the Lord hears us! the name of the God of Jacob defend thee; If you think about the life of Jacob you can see that he was delivered out of many troubles many times by God. We call on the name of the same God to help us.
2

Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion;

Think about what the sanctuary was to Israel and how Christ is the substance of that shadow. The sanctuary was the holy place where God was worshiped, and it was the place of His presence. Our help and strength dont come from any other place than God. Think of Psalm 23:6.
3

Remember all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice; Selah.

Look at I Samuel 13:8-12. Its apparent that the king felt a need to offer a sacrifice before the battle began. Christ also offered a sacrifice before destroying His enemies, and its this very sacrifice and battle in which we trust. He has defeated Satan, death, and sin.
4

Grant thee according to thine own heart, and fulfil all thy counsel.

The kings desire would have been to put his people at ease from their enemies. Christs desire and plan was the salvation and rest of His church, and He didnt lose even one.
5

We will rejoice in thy salvation,

The subjects who heard of a kings victory could rejoice knowing they were safe. Our Kings victory has caused us to rejoice! and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: Picture an army or a city with all its banners flying high overhead. Our enemies would tear them down, but we wave them in defiance. The name of the Lord is a strong tower (Prov. 18:10)! the LORD fulfil all thy petitions. Christ won total victory and received everything He asked. Think of His prayer in John 17.
6

Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. We know by experience that God saves His people. He will hear and save points us back to verse 2. Now I know (:6) that Hell do it.
7

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. The other armies trust in their strength, but we trust in Gods.
8

They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.

The result is plain: no strength can deliver from God or overtake Him.
9

Save, LORD: let the king hear us when we call.

We call on our Lord and King to save us, and were confident of His victory! newgracebaptistchurch.wordpress.com
