SANITATION Sanitation remains one of the biggest unaddressed development challenges in India. Despite significant improvements in recent years, at least 40 per cent of the population (and possibly many more) do not yet have access to adequate sanitation. Sanitation is a complex problem that has interrelated implications for human health, environmental health, and water quality. Inadequate sanitation is a root cause of human and ecological degradation. Inadequate sanitation leads to pollution of water bodies, which poses a significant public health and environmental problem. Yet research seldom focuses on the legal and policy aspects of inadequate sanitation, per se. Instead, sanitation is often treated as an afterthought. ELRS seeks to fill this gap by developing legal and policy frameworks for the right to sanitation in India.
