Course Outline Course Title: Course Length: Grades: Journalism 1 year 9-12

Course Description Journalism provides students with extensive advanced training in writing, editing, and rewriting material for publication. Students in the class write news stories, editorials, and features; write headlines and cutlines; design layout using word processing and page design software; learn the art of teamwork. Course Goals: Students perfect writing skills with an emphasis on accuracy, unity, and a polished style. Students perfect information acquisition skills, particularly interview and research techniques. Students perfect listening and speaking techniques through interviewing. Students learn the principles of graphic design using computer software. Students learn the word processing skills necessary to use a computer to compose and edit written documents. Students learn the writing and speaking skills unique to the electronic media, particularly radio, television, and new media journalism. Course Objectives History of journalism Students will: Demonstrate knowledge of Americas first newspapers, such as the penny press, and its importance to development of the American press. Identify Yellow Journalism and muckraking and explain their impact on the American press. Compare modern news media: the large-city newspaper, news magazines, broadcast news, and on- line newspaper and news sources. Identify current trends in journalism today. Press freedoms Students will: Demonstrate knowledge of the first Amendment to the Constitution. Demonstrate knowledge of important federal and state law which scholastic journalism. Define libel, invasion of privacy, and other areas of journalistic ethics. Evaluate and apply ethical principles including fairness, objectivity, right of reply and attribution. Evaluate high school, college and professional publications for content, credibility, reliability, fairness, ethics, and consumer law.

Gathering and selecting news Students will: Use the elements of news and reader interest to select newsworthy topics. Identify a variety of news and information sources Use brainstorming and critical thinking skills to select and finalize selection of news stories Interviewing Students will: Demonstrate knowledge of interviewing techniques. Interview a newsworthy subject, taking detailed notes, which include direct quotations that could be used in a story. News Stories Students will: Distinguish between fact and opinion in writing and learn to eliminate bias from news stories. Recognize and write various types of news leads Effectively use paraphrasing, partial and direct quotes, and transitions in news stories Recognize effective organizational patterns for news writing Write a depth story suitable for student publication. Feature Stories Students will: Students will identify characteristics and types of feature stories, culminating in the writing of a feature story. Editorials Students will: Recognize elements of editorial pages and identify the four basic parts of an editorial. Write an editorial using specific evidence to support criticism and presenting a viable solution to a problem. Sports writing Students will: Recognize the importance of specific writing skills for sports stories Write a pre-game, game, or post-game sports story. Headlines and Captions Students will: Identify kinds, and effective writing of, headlines and captions Write effective headlines and captions Layout Students will: Identify the aims of newspaper layout and demonstrate knowledge of the elements of layout Prepare a layout using a computer and page layout software

Copyediting Students will: Use consistent style by following selected guidelines and use conventions of journalistic writing. Recognize the value and importance of proofreading and demonstrate knowledge of sele cted copy-editing and proofreading symbols. Advertising Students will: Define several advertising appeals and their purpose in promoting products and services. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of advertising design and composing effective advertising copy. Photography Students will: Demonstrate knowledge of photography in student publications and identify the qualities of a good photograph. Demonstrate knowledge of effective selection and layout.
