breath of fresh sea air

If you fancy taking a break somewhere a bit different this year, youve come to the right place. While the Isle of Man might seem familiar if you live in the British Isles, youll soon see its quite unlike anywhere else.
Whether you come by sea or air, your initial sight of the Isle of Man is always an arresting one - mile upon mile of wild coastline and countryside waiting to be explored. This is just the beginning of a journey full of surprises and memorable experiences. Sometimes described as Britain in miniature, the Island is only 33 miles long by 13.5 miles wide yet contains amazing scenic diversity. From windswept uplands to lush glens, towering cliffs to miles of empty strand, you can be in a different region from one hour to the next. This patchwork sums up the Isle of Man as a place where different worlds meet to produce something very special indeed. What sets the Isle of Man apart? For a start, theres our unique status: part of the British Isles and a Crown dependency, yet also an independent, self-governing kingdom. Tynwald, the Manx parliament, was established by the Vikings and is over 1,000 years old. We have our own currency, flag, national anthem, stamps and Gaelic language, which is related to Scots and Irish Gaelic but distinct from both. An old Manx Gaelic motto, traa dy liooar, means time enough - and this just about sums up our way of life in the Isle of Man. Here, we believe in taking things easy and appreciating the good things in life, so its the perfect destination if you want to completely unwind and recharge your batteries, away from the rush and stresses of life. Lastly, for only a small Island, we seem to have more of everything: more beauty, history, more character, more contrasts. These rich contrasts mean that there is a wealth of things to experience from the moment you arrive. Whether your interests lean towards history, adventure pursuits, culture, motorsport, nature or simply soaking up the scenery, you will be spoilt for choice. Come to the Isle of Man and you can explore the outdoors, see the worlds greatest road races and combine a sunset picnic with a little whale watching - all in the space of a day! And with plenty of sea and air connections to the UK and Ireland, it couldnt be easier to get here and begin your holiday.

The isle of Man steam railway, dating back to 1873, is the longest narrow gauge steam line remaining in Britain. The Millennium Way, which runs through the heart of the Island from Ramsey to Castletown makes another fine scenic trek. cycling is a strong tradition in the Isle of Man: our roads were the training ground for Manxmen Mark Cavendish and Peter Kennaugh, Tour de France star and Olympic Gold medallist respectively. When you think of the Irish Sea, maybe you imagine a cold, forbidding ocean. It might look this way on a winters day, but to many people here, the sea represents fun challenges and incredible wildlife encounters. You can take to the waves to try wind-surfing and sailing, kayaking and coasteering. An energetic blend of rockscrambling and sea swimming, coasteering is a huge hit with groups. The Isle of Mans rich, unspoiled landscape is home to an incredible variety of wildlife. Our famous tailless Manx cat and four-horned loaghtan sheep are just the start of the story! Several species of birds which are rare in other parts of Britain - such as Hen Harriers and Choughs - thrive here. Manns coastal waters are rich in marine wildlife: take a boat trip or stroll the coastal footpaths for the best spotting opportunities. Our flora is just as abundant as our fauna: feast your eyes on wildflower meadows, glens carpeted with bluebells and hedgerows vivid with gorse flowers and fuchsia. The Calf of Man

The Calf of Man (Yn Cholloo in Manx), divided from the Isle of Man by the Sound, has been a bird observatory since 1959. As well as being a haven for many migrant species, the Calf is home to thousands of seabirds, including Fulmars, Puffins, Kittiwakes, Gannets and Storm Petrels; theres also a breeding population of Manx Shearwaters, which have happily recovered from being almost wiped out in the 19th Century. You can explore the Calf on a day trip or arrange a stay through Manx National Heritage (we recommend booking well in advance).

Spotted varieties. Look out for guided orchid walks at this time of year - theyre a great introduction to this special place. Ballaugh Curragh itself, the Islands largest wetland, is an internationally recognised Ramsar site and an Area of Special Scientific Interest. In recent times, the area has become known for a rather unlikely resident: the wallaby. As a result of a pair escaping from the nearby Wildlife Park years ago, the Curragh now shelters a thriving colony of wild wallabies. The shy marsupials have even attracted the attention of TV crews!

Protected places
The Manx Wildlife Trust, which works to protect the Islands natural habitats, manages a number of sites which are well worth exploring. Just a short walk from Castletown, scarlett is a stunning peninsula of limestone and volcanic rock formations. You can while away hours hunting for fossils, exploring rockpools and soaking up the views. In the north, the ayres - several miles of windswept sand dunes and shingle beach - is a nesting site for several tern species and home to many rare plants and lichens. Outstanding amongst the Trusts reserves for its biodiversity is close sartfield, 31 acres of marsh, meadow and woodland in Ballaugh Curragh. Birdwatchers should look for Hen Harriers, Peregrine Falcons and Corncrakes, as well as many species of warblers and waders. The land is also home to brown hares, bats and lizards, plus many moths and butterflies. Close Sartfield is most famous for its orchids: from May to July, the meadows bloom with thousands of flowers, including Heath Spotted, Early Marsh and Common

Stars of the Irish Sea

From early May until as late as September, basking sharks gather in Manx waters to feed and reproduce. These gentle giants, which can grow up to 11-12 metres long, are the second biggest fish in the world. Plankton eaters which pose no threat to humans, they are classed as an endangered protected species in the Irish Sea. Eight whale and dolphin species have been classified as regulars in Manx waters, including Bottlenose and Rissos Dolphins, Minke Whales and even Killer Whales. Keep your fingers crossed for a thrilling sighting! Lastly, grey seals can be seen at many points around the coast but in particular at the Sound - at low tide, many seals haul out onto the tiny islet, Kitterland, which sits between the mainland and the Calf of Man.

Look for Hen Harriers, Peregrine Falcons and Choughs, as well as many species of warblers and waders.

Remember when you were young and carefree, how the days never seemed to end? Come rain or shine

One of the best aspects of being on an Island is feeling somehow closer to the elements. As the seasons unfold, the landscape is transformed by restless skies and seas. The Manx weather can be pretty unpredictable - we never know when Manannan might draw his cloak low around the Island and whip up the wind! but thats all part of the fun. In autumn and winter time, its great to watch dramatic storms unfold at sea - the Calf of Man and Niarbyl are particularly good vantage points - or take a wander through the glens as the leaves turn golden. In sunshine, the Islands sweeping beaches and rocky coves lend themselves to the simple pleasures of beach-combing and exploring rockpools.
If youd rather stay indoors, take your pick from adventure and sports, cinema and theatre, and the Islands heritage sites. You could set your pulse racing with a game of Laserblast at the Manx Fun Farm (Onchan) or go ten pin bowling at the sure strike bowling and Leisure centre in Ramsey. Alternatively, test your climbing skills at Douglas hot rocks climbing Wall or make a splash in the pools and fun flumes of the national sports centre; there are also further pools in Peel, Castletown and Ramsey.

Under the trees

The Island has eighteen mountain and coastal national glens which are open to the public. Here, youll discover some of the most spectacular scenery in the British Isles - rushing waterfalls and deep emerald pools, carpets of wildflowers and woods alive with birdsong. If you like nature walks, you might also want to take in tynwald national Park and arboretum in St Johns. Created to mark the Tynwald Millennium, the park covers 25 acres of lush, unspoiled countryside. Its the perfect spot for a picnic and children will enjoy feeding the resident ducks.

Outdoor family fun

ramseys Mooragh Park is the Islands largest open air recreation site, featuring a boating lake, tennis courts, a bowling green, crazy golf, a BMX track, a playground and more. While some activities (pedalo hire, for instance) carry a small fee, admission to the park is free. Just a couple of miles from Douglas, onchan Pleasure Park offers similar attractions to the Mooragh, while next door, onchan raceway is home to the Islands stockcar racing action. Fast and furious races take place weekly throughout the summer and offer great entertainment. In summer, silverdale park near Ballasalla is a long-term favourite with families: the boating lake, playground and cafe are all located in beautiful woodland near Ballasalla village. Dont miss the Victorian water-powered merry-go-round perhaps the oldest of its kind in the world. For pure nostalgic pleasure, take the steam train from Douglas all the way to Port Erin for a day at the beach. Golden sands, ice cream parlours and fresh sea air - the simplest ingredients for a perfect day out.

Animal magic
If you or your family love animals, keep a day free to visit the curraghs Wildlife Park in Ballaugh. From lemurs and meerkats to penguins and otters, the park is home to many exotic, unusual and endangered species from around the world. Theres also a miniature railway, the Orchid Line. Meanwhile, outside Douglas, the isle of Man home of rest for old horses currently home to eight donkeys and fifty former working horses, including veteran Douglas trammers makes for a great trip out. Last but not least, the Mann cat sanctuary in Santon is, naturally, a heaven for cat lovers! Several hundred cats live freely side by side with donkeys, chickens and ducks in an idyllic country setting.

13

A class of its own

At first glance, the tranquil Isle of Man seems an unlikely hub of international motorsport. But thats exactly what it is: home not only to the world-famous TT Races but a whole host of renowned bike races and rallies.

World class racing action...

The Worlds greatest road race
For over one hundred years, the tt (tourist trophy) Festival has captivated race fans and created legends. The 37 and 3/4 mile Mountain Course represents a challenge unlike any other and is associated with many of the greatest names in motorcycle history: Mike Hailwood, Joey Dunlop, John McGuinness. In between exhilarating races, the tt Festival has plenty to keep you entertained, including stunt shows, rallies and live music. Meanwhile, on the 4.25 mile Billown Circuit in the south, there are Pre and Post tt meetings, followed by the Southern 100 in July. Known as the friendly races, the southern 100 is where many great racers cut their teeth, and theres always a fantastic atmosphere.

The rallies: modern and classic

Kicking off the four-wheeled action is the Manx classic rally, held in April: three days of sprints and hillclimbs which put vintage and classic cars through their paces on the Islands narrow, winding roads. This is followed in May by the Manx national rally, a high octane stage event which sees competitors vying for the fastest finish at the Grandstand in Douglas. Lastly, September, brings rally isle of Man, which tests drivers mettle over 160 stage miles and ranks as one of the most prestigious in the European calendar.

Introducing the Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling...

The isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling replaces the Manx Grand Prix Festival for 2013, featuring the Manx gP races for amateur riders; two of the UKs biggest off road motorcycle trials, the Vintage Motor cyle club rally and the brand new classic tt races.

If youre on the trail of your Manx connections or simply passionate about local history, the iMuseum is real treasure trove. Just a stones throw from the Manx Museum in central Douglas, Manx National Heritages digital resource gives you free access to: 18th and 19th Century baptism, marriage and burial records Isle of Man newspapers and publications back to the 1700s Census and war memorial records Over 3,000 photographs and artworks With helpful staff always at hand and new content being added to the digital archives all the time, journeying into the Islands past has never been so rewarding or compelling

So addictive. Thats how a visitor described the iMuseum and Id struggle to say it better. The iMuseum spins fascinating stories about the Island and peoples own family history. Weve become used to seeing surprised faces as stories emerge, from the girl who found out that her great-grandad won the Manx Grand Prix in the 1950s, to the shipwreck enthusiast who solved the 24-year long mystery of the paddle wheel, to the gentleman who came face to face onscreen with an uncle hed only known as a name carved on the National War Memorial. Jude Dicken, curator (Documentation officer) I took a call from England about a painting with the initials MQS and 1922 on the back. All the caller knew was that the S stood for Stowell. Knowing that Flaxney Stowell was an artist who had several sons, I set to work, and managed to uncover the life of Mylrea Quayle Stowell. My enquirer is now planning a trip to the Isle of Man to do some more family history research himself! Before the iMuseum, it would have been almost impossible to track down this much information. Its fantastic to be able to provide such good customer service and, of course, to inspire people to actually come and visit us here. Kirsty neate, curatorial services officer

local produce and signature dishes.

youll discover that, in the Isle of Man, we love making the most of food and drink thats served up in the same place it came from - right here! We also believe that good food and drink - like a beautiful view or great company - should always be savoured, never rushed. Here are some of the definitive tastes of Mann...

1 2 3 4 5

Manx kippers : One of the Isle of Mans most famous exports and powerfully flavoursome! Whole herring are slowly smoked over oak chips in a centuries-old tradition. To see how its done, take a tour of Moores Kipper Yard on the quayside in Peel. Queenies : Smaller and more succulent than King Scallops, Queen Scallops - Queenies are sustainably sourced from Manx waters. Loaghtan lamb : The meat of the native Manx loaghtan sheep is rich, gamey and lower in fat than regular lamb. A loaghtan burger is, like the animal itself, just a little bit different. bonnag : A traditional Manx scone, wholesome and satisfying. Widely available in Island tearooms - enjoy it plain or with pure Manx honey. ice cream : Ice creams produced in the Isle of Man are made from the finest natural ingredients, making them no less naughty but certainly nicer.

6 7 8 9

real ale : The Islands two main breweries, Okells and Bushys, produce a range of great quality ales and stouts, available bottled and on draught. Purity laws in force in the Isle of Man ensure a clean, superior flavour. Elderflower Keshal : This Manx champagne is made in small quantities at the Apple Orphanage on the west coast of the Island. As their name suggests, they also make fresh juice and cider from 100% local fruit. Manx cheese : The Isle of Man Creamery, a co-operative of small Manx dairy farms, produces a range of awardwinning cheeses made wholly with milk from local herds. confectionery : Beautiful, hand-crafted chocolates from Davisons and Cocoa Red, wickedly good fudge and toffee from The Original Manx Fudge Factory... what better excuse than a holiday to indulge your sweet tooth?

Heart, soul & voice

Maybe its our independent spirit - the Isle of Man has always had a vibrant cultural scene which far outweighs its size. A number of small festivals take place annually, spanning everything from opera and jazz to rock and blues. Theres also a wide variety of theatre, musical, dance and comedy shows to catch at any time of year.
Outstanding small venues such as Erin Arts Centre and Peel Centenary Centre are known for excellent concerts and films, while the Sayle Gallery (Douglas) and Hodgson Loom Gallery (Laxey) show exhibitions year-round. The House of Manannan and the Manx Museum also host exhibitions throughout the year and are both milestones on your cultural journey of Mann. In summer, great outdoor events spring up, from Shakespearean drama in the grounds of Peel Castle and Rushen Abbey to live music on Port Erin beach. Home to many talented musicians and singers, the Isle of Man has a strong reputation for live music: you can stumble across a good band or open mic session any night of the week. While the Villa Marina concert hall may be the Islands largest entertainment venue, the Gaiety Theatre is deservedly the most famous. Designed by Frank Matcham, the Gaiety is a rare and beautiful example of a Victorian music hall, lovingly preserved and maintained. A guided tour of its history - and ghosts! - is highly recommended. The Villa Marina and the Gaiety Theatre have a year round calendar of shows and events, for more information visit www.villagaiety.com

Vel Gaelg Ayd? A rough guide to Manx Gaelic

Do you speak Manx? Nowadays, many people in the Isle of Man can answer ta Gaelg aym yes, I do. Manx Gaelic, the original language of the Manx people, was last spoken as a first language in 1974. Since that time, however, dedicated people have worked to protect and promote the language. While only a small minority of the population is fluent, interest is steadily increasing: theres a Gaelic playgroup and primary school, and many classes available to adult learners around the Island. As a visitor, youll notice that street and place names are displayed in Manx as well as English. If you want to hear a little conversational Gaelic, traditional pubs the albert (Port St Mary) and the Whitehouse (Peel) are a good place to start. Stay somewhere
There are a number of well-equipped campsites around the Island; if youre coming for a walking or cycling holiday, its worth having a look at these locations as you plan your itinerary. Check seasonal availability and book in advance if youre visiting during the busy TT or Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling periods.
yurts & pods
If you love the outdoors but cherish a few creature comforts, a riverside yurt in Union Mills could offer the perfect retreat for you. Sabas Glen Yurt, the Islands first eco campsite, boasts a small group of yurts with solar powered electricity, stove heating and even a hot tub or two. www.sabasglenyurt.com Just a few miles along the road in Glen Vine, Glenlough Campsite offers wooden camping pods alongside regular pitches. These pods, snug and surprisingly spacious, are becoming hugely popular as a 21st Century alternative to sleeping under canvas. www.glenloughcampsite.com

Find your own

Isle of Man

Once you get to know the Island a little better, your curiosity may take you off the beaten track. The Islands landscape is full of hidden places, steeped in history and atmosphere. Heres a taster to start off your journey of discovery...

The Real Faery Bridge

Tucked away down a farm track in Kewaigue, this little stone bridge in the woods is often dubbed the real Faery Bridge. While its traditionally considered lucky to doff your cap at the official Fairy Bridge (see p.22), its worth exploring such lesser-known supernatural haunts.

Lag ny Keilley
Park up at Eary Cushlin on the coastline at Dalby and descend a narrow sheep track to Lag ny Keilley (lag neh kill-yer). The site of an early Christian hermitage and chapel, this stunningly isolated spot is a window onto ancient times.

Spooyt Vane
This enchanting waterfall (which translates as White Waterspout) is just off the main road between Kirk Michael and Peel. The ancient remains of Cabbal Pherick (St Patricks Chapel) stand nearby. Sites such as this were held as sacred by the Manx Celts, who believed that the gods dwelt in natural places.

Garwick Beach
Between Groudle and Laxey Bay lies Garwick Bay, situated in Baldrine valley. Garwick glen, one of the prettiest spots in the Island, leads down to the beach, from where there are lovely views across to Cumbria on a clear day.

The Chasms
On the southwest coast, near the village of Cregneash, is a collection of fissures cut deep into the cliffs. A popular area with rock climbers outside nesting season, its also a good place to spot seabirds nesting on the Sugar Loaf rock in Spring.

Glen Dhoo
One of Manx Wildlife Trusts nature reserves, Glen Dhoo is a picturesque valley inland from Ballaugh that has a Brigadoon-like sense of mystery and seclusion.

Its time to start discovering your Isle of Man...

Tarroo Ushtey

Legend has it...

It began with Manannan
According to legend, Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill was battling with a Scottish rival, Benandonner, and wrenched up a chunk of Ireland to fling at the Scot. His missile landed in the Irish Sea, midway between Ireland and England, and thus the Isle of Man was created.

as a place with a such a distinctive cultural identity, it might not surprise you to know that the isle of Man has its own unique folklore, customs and superstitions. youve had an introduction to the isle of Mans heritage and landscape, now its time to meet the inhabitants of its invisible realm...

Buggane

Phynnodderee

But its Manannan mac Lir who is most closely identified with the Isle of Man. A pagan sea god with magical powers, Manannans rule ended with the arrival of St Patrick, who was unswayed by Manannans attempts to frighten him. Transforming into three jointed legs, Manannan tore away into the sea - but his parting cry was whichever way you throw me, I will stand. This defiant message and the three jointed, armoured legs became the official motto and emblem of the Isle of Man.

The little people

While visiting, you may hear talk of the Little People. This is the Islands faery population, little seen but widely respected. The faeries had a changeable nature and the old Manx people took pains to keep them on their side. Its still customary to say hello to them as you pass the Fairy Bridge on the main southbound road from Douglas. For extra luck, say it in Manx: Moghrey mie/fastyr mie, Mooinjer Veggey (morra-my/faster my, moon-jer veggah) - Good morning/good afternoon, Little People.

The good, the bad and the terrible

Moddey Dhoo

There are many strange and wonderful creatures here, from the mischievous Tarroo Ushtey (water bull) to the Lhiannan Shee, a vampiric temptress. Best known are the Phynnodderee, a hairy sprite of immense strength, and the Buggane, a terrible ogre. The Islands most notorious ghost is the Moddey Dhoo (more-thah doo), a black hound who haunts Peel Castle. The story goes that the Moddey Dhoo so terrified a castle guard that he was struck dumb and quickly died. If you dare risk such a fate, Isle of Man Ghost Tours lead excursions round the Islands historic streets, uncovering their ghoulish secrets.

There are two mobile phone networks operating on the Isle of Man - Manx Telecom and Sure. Each mobile network has commercial agreements with mobile phone networks in the UK, Europe and the rest of the world and it is advisable to check with your own mobile network to determine the level and charges of the roaming services with the Isle of Man providers. Please note the Isle of Man is outside the EU jurisdiction and as such does not benefit from the tariff caps operating within the European Union.

currency information
The Isle of Man has its own currency with the same denominations as the UK and still has 1 notes. UK currency is legal tender in the Isle of Man but Manx currency is not accepted in the UK, although notes can be exchanged at UK banks.

Postal services
The Isle of Man Post Office has, since its formation in 1973, issued distinctive Manx stamps by the Philatelic Bureau. You will need to purchase Manx stamps to post any mail from the Isle of Man.

Doctors and hospitals

The Manx Emergency Doctor Service (MEDS) operate an Out of Hours emergency service when doctors surgeries are closed. The service is contactable on +44 (0)1624 650355 and is ONLY available from 6.00pm to 8.00am Monday to Friday, with 24-hour cover over weekends and bank holidays

Police
The Isle of Man Police are easily recognisable and are very approachable should you need any assistance. The Police Headquarters is at Glencrutchery Road, Douglas and the telephone number is +44 (0)1624 631212. In an emergency please dial 999.
