DAILY DRAWINGS
These illustrations form part of an ongoing project where I draw a single frame narrative relating to events and my internal dialogue from day to day. I use water-colour and ink on Arches or Fabriano paper, and each drawing is no bigger than a postcard. Below is an exhibition from 2006.

For two years I worked at Jincom Publishing. A company that specialises in creating educational entertainment for children and semi-literate audiences. I founded the Animation Department. During my tenure the department grew to generate 40% of the companys revenue.

Public speaking is listed as one of the most common fears people suffer from. Even though this might be the case, giving a presentation can be very enjoyable. Skills, to avoid the feeling that you are about to die, largely depend on practicing speaking in front of people (which gives you confidence) and the adequate preparation of your presentation. Let us briefly unpack some of the most obvious things you need to consider when addressing a bunch of people

Research for Design DES200.1 PROJECT: CHILDRENS RANGE BRIEF FOR CYCLE 4, 2011 FACILITATOR: NADIA FOUCHE
You will be doing research in preparation for your childrens range in design week. You will create a brand identity in groups of three or four. You will create logos individually relating to the brand. Groups: Research the macro trends Eco Hedonism, Hyper Culture, or Radical Minimalism, as you will find on WGSN and create a child appropriate theme for kidswear that you will use to create your ranges. Create concept boards that will represent your brand as well as the theme for the range. Individually: Create a logo and brand image for the company you will be creating as a group. Keep in mind that a logo is something that should not be directly linked to a trend, as it will have to withstand changing trends.
DAY 2 Research the relevant theme you choose as a group [see below for groups]. Use the macro trends to guide your theme. Go and look at what is appropriate in shops for children ranging from 3-8. Compile your research and create 4 research boards relating to a brand you have created. Start to create a brand identity and summarize your approach as a group. Questions to research on the internet: What is a brand identity? What is a logo? Watch the film, Helvetica, as an introduction to the world of typography and the use of it in everyday designs. As part of your research, take photos of four different designs you see in stores that use the typeface Helvetica and briefly discuss it. [This task is in addition to your research on childrens wear and is aimed to help you become critical and analytical about signage we see every day]

BRIEF FOR CYCLE 4 PART 2 (out of 2) PROJECT: TREND COPYING/INTERPRETING AND GROUP WORK FACILITATOR: NADIA FOUCH TASK OVERVIEW You will be divided into groups to select and research a client (a local mass-market chainstore ladies-wear brand) through primary and secondary market research. Your group will then compile a written, visual overview of the target market. Your group will also each select a trend related theme for SA Autumn/winter 2013 and develop a focal point by sourcing and prioritizing images relevant to the trend, season and client, while making use of a variety of secondary sources. The images will be used to compile a visual inspiration board which will act as a design reference in DES100.2; where each student will be re-interpreting existing ideas to create a co-ordinated story appropriate to the industry client, season and trend selected by the group. Please note that this is the second brief for this research project and does not contain the market research guidance you need to include. Choose ONE of the following trends and compile relevant information regarding the key items depicting the trend; the different or specific angle that you, as a group, want to focus on; how it will fit in with your clients needs and a written section with your interpretation and angle of the trend in your own words. You can use some of the trend material Andy supplied on the server and in her powerpoint presentation, but I would like to see your own interpretation as well as compilation (or how and what you chose) of the relevant items/visuals. Images to include: Focus on the retail site images (use more than one site to validate the trend) Use catwalk images in support of your retail items. You need at least one trend forecasting image (like a TD from WGSN) and one mood enhancing image. WEEK PLANNER: Day 1: Design direction from Andy and
construction of the market research client board. Choose A trend. Day 2: copying, interpreting, and the legal aspects related to trend popularity. Research images for inspiration board.

(Toca Boca is a childrens games application brand that creates educational, yet quirky games for kids. Visit their site at tocaboca.com to see what I mean. Look at how their basic brand identity stays the same, no matter what the difference is between the games. You can apply this to how you should see the difference between your brand and the trend you choose for a specific range.)

TASK: You will create a mix-n-match or exquisite corpse-like book relating to the trend found on WGSN, called JPEG GEN. This book has to be a visual representation and synthesis of your research. Use it as inspiration for your fashion design DES100.2, by writing a statement of intent when the book is completed.
I value projects that develop as an ongoing process; a tool to view ones personal development.
Blow-up project. This project is an ongoing theme where I explore the effect different scale has on visuals and objects.
In school I focussed on sculpture and painting. This combination helped me to see that each media has its own inherent direction. This can be seductive and alluring, yet distracting and deterministic in the kind of work produced. This inspired me to become experimental in my use of media and objects. Some experimentations with leather and hand-bag designs. To the right is a taste of The Paper Project, an experimental exhibition co-created with Sunette Viljoen.
