Summary of Recommendations of Soil Consultant

A. Possible Foundation Types
1. Spread Footing bearing in the upper 5 m of the silty clay material:
Allowable bearing pressure on:
Strip Footing: 110 kPa
Individual Pad Footing: 130 kPa
2. Spread Footing bearing in the sand below 5 m:
Allowable bearing pressure: 300 kPa
3. Expanded Base Piling, 8 m below bottom of excavation:
Maximum allowable pile capacity: 2000 kN per pile
B. Lateral Pressure
Due to the swelling nature of the clays it is advisable to design elements for a pressure at rest
based on Ka 0.75 and a soil unit weight of20 kN/m
3
. This is equivalent to the pressure
exerted by a fluid of 1530 kg/m3 density.
C. Sulphates
Relatively low concentrations of sulphates were found at this site. Thus a sulphate resistant
cement is not required for concrete in contact with the ground.
D. Test Hole Logs
The logs oftest hole 10 drilled in July 2012 are appended.
