Hello, Ward 5! Happy New Year! I am very excited about this year and ready to get to work on some of the key issues facing our Ward and the District of Columbia. I am honored that my colleagues have chosen me to serve as Chair Pro Tempore and the chair of the Committee on Government Operations. My staff and I are working diligently to make sure we are listening to your concerns and addressing the important issues affecting our communities. We designed the Ward 5 Report to provide you with the latest news and announcements from around the Ward. Thank you all for your continued support. I know that this will be a great year for Ward 5 and the District of Columbia. Kenyan R. McDuffie Highlights From Around Ward 5 Inauguration Day Open House On Monday, January 21, the world witnessed the historic inauguration of President Barack Obama. Councilmember McDuffie held an open house, at the John A. Wilson Building, for Ward 5 residents. Here are a few highlights captured that day:

New ANC Swearing In Ceremony On January 2, Councilmember McDuffie administered the Oath of Office for the newly elected Ward 5 Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners (ANC) at the Washington Convention Center.

Fort Lincoln Crime Prevention Strategy Panel On January 17, Councilmember McDuffie participated in a panel discussion on crime prevention and detection strategies for the Fort Lincoln Community with Metro Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier, Commander Andy Solberg, ANC Chair Jacque Manning and other community stakeholders. The panel provided an update on crime in the Ft. Lincoln area and offered safety prevention measures for neighbors. Announcements 2013 Community Engagement Hours Councilmember McDuffie kicks off his 2013 community office hours across the ward. This is a tradition the Councilmember started shortly after taking office. These meetings are designed to give Ward 5 residents a venue to voice their concerns and offer suggestions without having to travel to the John A. Wilson Building. The kickoff meeting will be on February 1, from 8 a.m. 10 a.m. at Flip It Bakery and Deli, located at 1544 Rhode Island Avenue NE. We look forward to seeing you there! Councilmember McDuffie will March for Gun Control On Saturday, January 26, at the U.S. Capitol Reflecting Pool east of Third Street NW, Councilmember McDuffie will join Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and Councilmembers David Grosso (I At Large) and Tommy Wells (D Ward 6) to walk along Constitution Avenue in support of gun control in our nation. They will lead the March to the Washington Monument carrying a banner that reads When we stand together, we stand a chance. Time To Sign Up For The D.C. Summer Youth Employment Program The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is a locally funded initiative sponsored by the Department of Employment Services that provides District youth ages 14-21 with enriching and constructive summer work experiences through subsidized placements in the private and government sectors. Applications must be completed online at the SYEPs website at www.summerjobs.dc.gov.

The online application will be available beginning Friday, January 25 at 12:15pm. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis and must be received no later than Saturday, February 16. Space is limited, so apply early! Legislative Updates McDuffie Introduces Bill Requiring Candidates and Treasurers to Complete Campaign Finance Training Councilmember McDuffie, Chair of the Committee on Government Operations, along with Councilmember Muriel Bowser (D Ward 4), Councilmember Tommy Wells (D Ward 6) and Councilmember David Grosso (I At-Large), introduced the Campaign Finance Training Amendment Act of 2013 at this weeks Committee of the Whole meeting. This legislation would establish a mandatory training program within the Office of Campaign Finance (OCF) to educate candidates for public office and the treasurers of political, exploratory, inaugural, transition and legal defense committees regarding campaign finance requirements. Councilmember McDuffie Introduces Legislation To Address Campaign Finance Reform and Improve the Quality Of Life For Ward 5 Residents During the first legislative meeting of Council Period 20, Councilmember McDuffie introduced several bills tackling campaign finance reform, promoting economic development throughout the District and improving the quality of life for many of the citys residents and. The bills include measures that would limit money order contributions to 5 percent of the maximum an individual can contribute to a political candidate in the District, limiting the number of medical marijuana cultivation centers and dispensaries that may locate in a ward, and creating a distillery pub license. Councilmember McDuffie also re-introduced a bill requiring insurers to provide a written statement to homeowners is made, explaining that a standard homeowners insurance policy does not cover losses from flood and an explanation of how flood insurance may be obtained. Upcoming Ward 5 Events: Saturday, January 26 SMD 5C07 will hold its first Single Member District meeting at the Woodridge Library, located on 18th and Rhode Island Ave NE, beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 26 SMD 5B03 will hold its first Single Member District meeting at the Slowe School Demountable, located at 1322 Irving Street NE, beginning at 2 p.m. Monday, January 28 The Bloomingdale Civic Association will hold its monthly meeting at St. Georges Church, located at 160 U St NW, beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, January 28 The Edgewood Civic Association will hold its monthly meeting at McKinley Technology High School, located at 151 T Street NE, beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, February 2 The Union Market Chess Challenge at Union Market, located at 1309 5th Street NE.
