What advantages allowed Spain and Portugal to expand overseas first? When Spain began, with Columbus first voyage in 1492, Portugal had already discovered the Sea Route around Africa to Asia and discovered most islands of the Atlantic, explored the entire western african coast and part of the east coast. So Portugal pioneered in 1415, Spain followed its footsteps almost 80 years after..Because Portugal was a stable and solid country since the early 1200's and Spain didn't even exist until 1492 when several kingdoms were united under the name "Spain" (Galicia, Catalunya, Leon, Asturias, Navarre, etc). After the 16th century, to whom did the lead in European colonial expansion pass and with what results? Portugal and Spain pioneered European exploration of the globe. Envious of the great wealth these empires bestowed, England, France and the Netherlands began to establish colonies and trade networks of their own in the Americas and Asia. 2. 3. What were the Colombian Exchanges and how did they affect the world? The Columbian Exchange, the exchange of European products to the Americas. The Columbian Exchange is one of the most significant results of the Age of Exploration and the First Global Age. Food products, livestock and diseases are but three elements of the Columbian Exchange. New foods and animals introduced to different parts of the world. The negative part.spread of diseases around the world. 4. What global labor and commercial structures, patterns, and relationships arose? Global labor and commercial structures arose through international trade creating multinational corporations spanning the globe with cheap labor happening in poor countries and service based jobs in a wealthier one.

Why would it be incorrect to call the system of world contacts, which arose during this period, a global system? There was no systematic rule that all nations followed, no universal organization or common laws, and the various contacts between two nations were as different depending on which two nations were in contact as the people in those places itself. For example, there could ne nothing in common between the way the French and the natives of America traded and how the English and the Chinese did. There was no universally applied laws or common interwoven markets like we see now.
