The Order of the Mass

In this lesson we will be looking at the order of the Mass and examining how it is structured from beginning to end. We will also be looking at the significance of each part. We have for tutorial purposes split the Mass up into 32 parts; this will allow us to go through each part and examine it and learn how the priest conducts a Mass service. Please take notes and as you go through this paper keep all your resources referenced in a page at the back of your assignment. Your references and resources will contribute to your final grade. Lets begin:

Part 1. The Entrance Antiphon. This is a text taken from the book of psalms which can either be spoken or delivered by Gregorian chant. Nowadays in most Churches, the Priest and the congregation say the Entrance Antiphon together to mark them coming together in prayer and in song. Part 2. The blessing and greeting. After the Entrance antiphon is said, the Priest and the People bless themselves before God and the Priest welcomes the congregation who comes before God by saying these words or similar. C. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. All. And also with you. Part 3. The Penetential Rite. Then the celebrant asks his people or flock that before celebrating in Christs mysteries let us all then prepare ourselves and reflect on our sins by saying; C. My brothers and sisters to prepare ourselves to celebrate in the sacred mysteries let us call to mind our sins
(The celebrant will pause for a few minutes and allow for reflection before reciting the Confiteor, meaning I Confess).

ALL: I Confess to almighty God, and to you my brothers and sisters that I have sinned through my own faults. (Striking the breast) In my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and what I have failed to do, and I ask blessed Mary ever virgin, all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the Lord our God.

C. May almighty God have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us into the everlasting life. ALL: Amen. C. Lord have mercy. C. Christ have mercy. C. Lord have mercy. The Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth, Lord God heavenly King almighty God and Father. We worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ only Son of the Father, Lord God Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy one, you alone are the Lord. You alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father. Amen. (Gloria in excelsis deo means; Glory to God in the Highest). (I HOPE YOU ARE ALL TAKEN NOTES WHEN WATCHING THE VIDEO 1 LECTURE 1 AS IT WILL BE BENEFICIAL WHEN YOU COME TO DO THE COURSEWORK AT THE END OF THIS LECTURE) Lets now take a look at Part 5. The Collect. This part is delivered by the Priest as he opens his arms to pray over his people. This part is called the Collect. It is a short prayer of a particular structure given to form the essence of the Mass. So lets refer to our Mass where using for the sake of this tutorial, and read the collect for The Baptism of the Lord. The Celebrant keeps his arms open and says; Almighty and ever living God, who when Christ had been baptized in the Jordan and as the Holy Spirit descended upon him, solemnly declared him your beloved Son, grant that your children by adoption, reborn of water and the Holy spirit may always be well pleasing to you in the unity of the Holy Spirit one God forever and ever. ALL: Amen. Now after reading the Collect and creating the first link of our journey into this Mass of the Baptism of the Lord. We move onto Part 6. ALL: Lord have mercy. ALL: Christ have mercy. ALL: Christ have mercy.

I hope before proceeding any further into this section, that you have a Roman missal in your possession. It is important to have it as you work through this paper so you can learn the flow of the Mass. The Liturgy of the word is said on Sundays and Solemnities. There is three accounts given of the scripture readings, and on other days there are only two. So we are now in year C and using the Baptism of the Lord Mass for this lesson dont forget. So let us look at the First reading. The Liturgy of the Word Part 6. First reading from the Prophet Isaiah;
Console my people, console them says your God. Speak to the heart of Jerusalem and call to her that there time of presence is ended, that there sin is atoned for, that she has received from the hand of the Lord double punishment of all their crimes. A voice cries prepare in the wilderness a way for the Lord. Make a straight highway for our God across the dessert. Let every valley be filled in, every mountain and hill be laid low, let every cliff become a plain, and the ridges a valley; then the Glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all mankind shall see it; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. Go up on a high mountain, joyful messenger to Zion, shout with a loud voice, joyful messenger to Jerusalem. Shout without fear, say to the towns of Judah, Here is your God. Here is the Lord coming with power, his arms subduing all things to him. The prize is of his victory is with him, his trophies all go before him. He is like a shepherd feeding his flock, gathering lambs in his arms, holding them against his breast and leading to their rest the mother ewes. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Then in this Mass we have the Responsorial Psalm after the first reading, but it can be said after the first and second reading is completed. However here is the responsorial psalm for this tutorial; Response Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. 1. Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are, Clothed in Majesty and glory, Wrapped in light as in a robe! You stretched out the heavens like a tent. (R) 2. Above the rains you build your dwelling, You make the clouds your chariot, You walk on the wings of the wind, You make the winds of your messengers And flashing fire your servants.(R) 3. How many are your works, O Lord, In wisdom you have made them all

The earth is full of your riches. There is the sea vast and wide, With its moving swarms past counting, Living things great and small. (R) 4. All of these look to you, To give them their food in due season. You give it, they gather it up: You open your hand, they have their fill (R) 5. You take back your Spirit, they die, returning to the dust from which they came. You send forth your Spirit, they are created; And you renew the face of the Earth. (R)

Second reading: The letter of St Paul to Titus Gods grace has been revealed, and it has made salvation possible for the whole human race and taught us what we have to do is to give up everything that does not lead to God, and all our worldly ambitions; we must be self-restrained and live good and religious lives here in this present world, while we are waiting in hope for the blessing which will come with the Appearing glory of our great God and savior Jesus Christ. He sacrificed himself for us in order to set us free from all wickedness and to purify a people so that it could be his very own and would have no ambition except to do good. When the kindness and love of God our Saviour for mankind were revealed, it was not because he was concerned with any righteous actions we might have done ourselves; it was for no reason except his own compassion that he saved us, by means of the cleansing water of rebirth and by renewing us with the Holy Spirit which he has so generously poured over us through Jesus Christ our savior. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

After that the celebrant has read the readings (which can be also said by other members of the congregation for the Priest), it then takes us to the Gospel acclamation and where we praise God for the good News he is about to give us. The Gospel acclamation can either be spoken or sung and it is the proclamation of the Gospel of the Gospel as an expression of greeting and welcome to the Lord who is about to speak in the Gospel. This Gospel acclamation is as follows; Alleluia Alleluia Someone is coming said John, Someone greater than I He will Baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire Alleluia.

The Gospel is then next and for this year we hear the Gospel for year C. This is the account according to Luke. The Gospel is said by the priest or celebrant. When the priest announces the reading of the Gospel and who it is from, he then makes a sign of the cross upon the book and then on himself 3 times once over his forehead then his lips and again over his heart. So for this tutorial we are reading the Holy Gospel according to Luke When the Gospel is finished being read the priest then raises the book and kisses it, silently saying the formula Per evangelica dicta, delantur nostra delicta which means by the Words of the Gospel, may our sins be blotted out. The Priest or Celebrant says This is the Gospel of the Lord. This tutorial gospel is as follows. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke; A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people who were beginning to think that John might be the Christ, so John declared before them all, I Baptise you with water, but someone is coming, someone who is more powerful than I am, and I am not fit to even undo the strap of his sandle; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Now when all the people had been baptized and when Jesus after his own baptism was at prayer, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily shape, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you. Praise to you lord Jesus Christ.

(The priest then says) This is the Gospel of the Lord

ALL: Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

At this point all the congregation sits while the celebrant delivers the Homily or Sermon. The Homily is usually based on the Gospel reading and it will be addressed in more detail in a separate tutorial, so for now we move on and on to Part 7. The Profession of Faith (or the Nicene Creed). This is where we announce our Christian faith and belief to God keeping in mind the words and the message of the Gospel. We believe in One God the Father the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only son of God, eternally begotton of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made, for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary and was made man (ALL BOW)

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit the Lord the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in our Apostolic Churches and Churches of good will across this world. We acknowledge Baptism for the forgiveness of sins we look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Once the profession of faith is done we then have the Prayers of the Faithful (Part 8) This is where we pray to God for the concerns over the Church and the World. After each of the prayers of the faithful, Lord hear us is said. This is followed by the congregations response Lord graciously hear us. This bring us to Part 9. The Liturgy of the Eucharist This is where the Priest or celebrant receives the offerings of bread and wine upon the altar (usually 2-4 members of the congregation brings the offerings) Then the gifts are prepared; The Celebrant raises the host on the Paten saying; Blessed are you Lord God of all creation, through your goodness we have this bread to offer which human hands have made, It will become for us the bread of life. All: Blessed be god forever. After this the Priest then pours a little water into the Chalice saying quietly by the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity. Then the celebrant raises the Chalice saying; Blessed are you Lord God of all creation, through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands, It will become for us our Spiritual drink. All: Blessed be God forever. Bowing the head, the celebrant then says silently;

Lord God we ask that you receive us and be pleased with the sacrifice we offer you with humble and contrite hearts. Then washing his hands (which can be assisted with another Priest or altar boy or girl) the Priest says; Lord wash away my iniquities and cleanse me from my sin. The priest then gives the exhortation to pray saying, pray brethren that our sacrifice may be acceptable to God the Almighty Father. And the people respond saying; May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his Church. This then takes us to: The prayer over the Gifts Part 10. The prayer over the Gifts used to be called the secreta or secret prayers, but thankfully nowadays these beautiful prayers are said aloud. They usually have reference to the Sacrament about to be offered: Todays one says; Accept, O Lord the offerings We have brought to honour the revealing of your beloved Son, So that the oblation of your faithful may be transformed into the sacrifice of him Who willed in his compassion to wash away the sin of the world who lives and reigns with you forever and ever. ALL: AMEN. Then we have our next part of praise and thanksgiving as we all are about to share in Christs Eucharist (Part 11), when the Priest says; C. The Lord be with you. P. And also with you. C. Lift up your hearts. P. Let us lift them up to the Lord. C. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. P. Its is right to give him thanks and praise. Then we enter into part 12 and the acclamation. The acclamation is where we acclaim our God in our public and private lives. Holy Holy Holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory,

Hosanna in the Highest, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the Highest. The next section is Part 13. The Eucharistic Prayer. Here we pray for different petitions under the same prayer title. So up until the Concluding Doxology in part 22 these following parts up onto that doxology is all part of the Eucharistic Prayer.

So lets start with the Eucharistic Prayer title as part 13, and begin looking at its contents starting at Part 14. Praise of the father. The Priest says with his arms open to pray over the people and over the Gifts; Father you are Holy indeed and all creation rightly gives you praise. All life all Holiness comes from you through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord by the working of the Holy Spirit. From age to age you gather a people to yourself so that from east to west a perfect offering may be made to the glory of your name. Part 15. Blessing the Gifts ; The Celebrant places his hands offer the gift and says; And so Father we bring you these Gifts, we ask you to make them Holy by the power of your Spirit, So that the may become theBody + and the Blood of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, as whose command we celebrate this Eucharist. Part 16. The narrative institution and consecration. The Priest or celebrant says and imitates the same on the altar using the bread in honour of the Lord. On the night he was betrayed, he took bread in his sacred hands and gave you thanks and praise. He broke the bread and giving it to his disciples and said; TAKE THIS ALL OF YOU AND EAT IT FOR THIS IS MY BODY WHICH IS GIVING UP FOR YOU. (Then the Priest rises the Host to the heavens and then genuflects before it) Then saying; When supper had ended he then took the cup again giving thanks and praise, he gave the cup to the disciples and said; TAKE THIS ALL OF YOU AND DRINK FROM IT, THIS IS THE CUP OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND EVERLASTING COVENANT, IT WILL BE SHED FOR YOU AND FOR ALL SO THAT SIN MAY BE FORGIVEN. DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME. Part 17. Proclaiming the Mystery of faith; ALL: Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again. Part 18. Memorial prayer and oblation This is then said by the priest with his arms still open, praying over his people and the Gifts. Father calling to mind the death your Son endured for our salvation, his glorious resurrection and ascension into heaven and ready to greet him when he comes again, we offer you in thanksgiving this

Holy and Living Sacrifice. Look with favour on your Churches offering and see the victim whose death has reconciled us to yourself. Grant that we are nourished by his Body and Blood may be filled with the Holy Spirit, and become one Body one Spirit in Christ. Part 19. The intercession of the Saints; Still with the Celebrants arms open it is said; May he make an everlasting Gift to you and enable us to share in the inheritance of your Saints, with Mary the Virgin Mother of God with the Apostles, the martyrs (Saint of the day can be stated) St Hilary of Poitiers, and all your Saints on whose constant intercession we rely for help. Part 20. Prayer for the Church and the World; Lord, may this sacrifice which has made our peace with you, advance the peace and salvation of all the world. Strengthen in faith and love, your pilgrim Church one earth your servant Pope.(Name - example Matriarch Leahmanda, Our Bishop Archbishop Bob Wilson) and all the Bishops with the clergy and the entire people your Son has gained for you. Father, hear in prayers of the Family you have gathered here before you. In mercy and love unite all your children wherever they may be. Part 21. For the deceased; Welcome into your kingdom our departed Brothers and Sisters,(Name any recent person(s )name who have died), and all who have left this world in your friendship. We hope to enjoy forever the vision of your glory, through Christ Our Lord from whom all good things come.

Part 22. The Concluding Doxology This is where we finalize the Eucharistic Prayer. The word Doxa means Glory therefore Doxology means Glorification. So the Celebrant lifts the Patent that has the Host, and the Chalice that holds the Sacred Blood together. Raising the sacred victim up high saying the Celebrant or Priest says; Through him, with him, in him, In the unity of the Holy Spirit, All glory and honour is yours Almighty father Forever and ever. All: AMEN.

Now this takes us to Part 23. In the Mass and the Communion Rite. At this part of the Mass the Celebrant invites his/her people to pray before the Lord by reciting his prayer. This is done by saying; Let us pray with confidence to the Father in the words our savior gave us, ALL: Our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it Is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespassed against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Celebrant: Deliver us Lord from every evil and grant us peace in our day, in your mercy keep us free from sin and protect us from all anxiety, as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our savior Jesus Christ. ALL: For the Kingdom the power and the Glory are yours, now and forever. Part 24. The Rite of Peace The priest will open his/her arms over the people Lord Jesus Christ you said to your Apostles, I leave you peace, my peace I give you. Look not on your Sins but on the faith of your Church and grant us the peace and unity of your Kingdom where you live forever and ever. AMEN. C. The peace of the Lord be with you always ALL: And also with you. C. Let us offer each other the sign of peace. Then the congregation shares a handshake with one another as a symbolism of unity, peace and love. The Priest breaks off a small piece of bread and adds it to the Chalice saying quietly; May this mingling of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, bring eternal life to us who receive it. The saying aloud everyone says; Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us, Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us, Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

After the Rite of peace is done we move on to Part 25.; The raising of the Host in prayer. Taking the Host in the celebrants hands its Raised before the people as the priest says; This is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, happy are those who are called to his supper. ALL: Lord I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. The Celebrant says quietly; Lord Jesus Christ, with faith in your love and mercy, I eat your body and drink your blood let it not bring me condemnation, but health in mind and in body. Amen. The Priest/celebrant then receives Holy Communion the Body of Christ, and then Drinks from the Chalice receiving the Blood of Christ. Part26. The Communion Antiphon Then the priest or celebrant will read the communion Antiphon before giving the Holy Host to the peoples. This tutorial Mass communion Antiphon is; Behold the one whom John said; I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God. When giving Holy Communion to the people the Celebrant says The body of Christ before giving the host into their mouth or onto their hands and receiving the Host the answer Amen. If the wine is offered at communion time (which in the Roman Catholic Church and many other Christian Churches is not given during Mass) The Priest says The blood of Christ again the recipient answers. Amen. When the priest or celebrant returns to the altar after giving the Holy Communion to his/her people, they purify the chalice taking this part of the lesson to Part 27 Part 27. Purifying the Chalice. Water is added to the Chalice to ensure that all of the blessed sacrament is consumed by the Celebrant so the water is added and the Chalice is once again drank from, by the Priest consuming all the Body and the Blood. The linen cloth used the Purificator is then used to clean the Chalice and while doing this the priest says in silent Lord may I receive these Gifts in purity of heart, may they bring me healing and strength now and forever. Amen. Then the purificator is draped over the Chalice and the Pall which is the square card that Is covered In linen, is placed on the top of the puriicator and Chalice and set to the side and the host may be returned to the tabernacle. After communion we all say the communion prayer together which is Part 28 Part 28. Prayer after Communion The prayer after communion for this tutorial Mass remembering where using the Mass The Baptism of the Lord is as follows;

Nourished by these Sacred Gifts, we humbly entreat your mercy O Lord, That faithfully, listening to your only begotten Son, we may be your children in name and in truth. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Now: The Concluding Rite Opening the Priests arms; Part 29&30} Concluding Rite and the Greeting by Celebrant; The Lord be with you ALL: And also with you. Part 31.} The Blessing; May Almighty God Bless you all, the Father,+ the Son and the Holy Spirit. (Making the sign of the cross over his People with the Lords Blessings) Part 32. The Dismissal; The Dismissal is where the priest sends each member of the congregation out to do Gods works by saying; Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. ALL SAY: Thanks be to God.
