1 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study In the USC NC (University of San Carlos North Campus), we use trash nets as storage for plastic bottles. The problem is that students do not follow the rule of throwing plastic bottles in the trash nets. The design doesnt encourage the students to throw plastic bottles in it. They find it boring and treat it like as a design inside the campus. So our group decided to propose the new plastic bottle sorter. It is more attractive and encouraging to students to throw plastic bottles in it. Our plastic bottle sorter guides your bottles into orderly lanes. It enables PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) bottles which have to be made ready for bottling to be reliably inspected and sorted. The efficient bottle sorter can be used for bottles and sorts reliably up to 300 bottles per day. In doing so, the system differentiates the bottles by shape. Plastic bottles are one of the main problems in our society. One of the most commonly rubbish disposed by the humanity. We all know that plastics takes time to decompose and it causes pollution when decomposing it using our own machines. Reusing plastic bottles many times can also cause health problems to us. We chose plastic bottles because it has a light size and disposing it is one of the common problems of our environment. Bottles are expected to be in uniform order after being dropped. Such process helps improve a quality of the product and at the same time increasing system efficiency. The uniform pattern can give more space to fill and easy inventory counting. The arrangement of the bottles can encourage students to keep their bottles sorted as they will find the process clean and tidy.

2 Statement of the Problem The study tends to investigate the impulse of Bottle Sorter to the surroundings. Specifically the research will seek: a. The need of separating plastic to other substance. b. To what extent does the transparent tube influence the people to throw only bottles and respond to the need of proper bottle segregation? c. Which form of transparent tubes fits the proper alignment of the bottle after it is dropped.

3 Theoretical Background and Reviews of Related Literature Plastic bottle is a bottle constructed of plastic, with a neck that is narrower than its real body and an opening at the top. The mouth of the bottle is normally sealed with a plastic bottle cap. Plastic bottles are typically used to store liquids such as water, soft drinks, motor oil, cooking oil, medicine, shampoo, milk, and ink. They quickly became popular with both manufacturers and customers due to their lightweight nature and relatively low production costs compared with glass bottles.

This study will be using transparent tube as passageways of plastic bottles to the sorter for it is a systematic way of segregation. It is also innovative and is very appealing to the students. In this case, students will be entertained when throwing their plastic bottles and it will motivate them to throw plastic bottles in the sorter. The plan is to drop the plastic bottle in the tube and after dropping, the bottles will be in a uniform alignment when it reached its designated place. Curve bodied transparent tube is needed as passageways. The end tip of the curve bodied tube will be cut in a slant form to help the bottles be arranged in the same formation. The reason why we us curve bodied transparent tube instead of straight bodied tube is that, straight bodied tube will cause a messy arrangement after dropping the plastic bottles. Lastly, it wont entertain people that much to throw their plastic bottles into the sorter.

Plastics are durable and degrade very slowly. The chemical bond of plastic is so durable that make it equally resistant to natural processes of degradation. Studies have indicated that food and drinks stored in such plastic containers can contain trace amount of Bisphenol A (BPA), a synthetic chemical that interferes with the bodys natural hormonal messaging system. The same studies found that repeated re-use of such plastic bottles increases the chance that chemicals will leak out of the tiny cracks and crevices that develop over time. Health advocates also recommend not reusing bottles made from plastic (polyethylene terephthalate, also known as PET or PETE), including most disposable water, soda and juice bottles.
