After a year of success with her Wirral Classes, Jane
Mann is expanding her Rosemary Conley Diet & Fit-
ness Franchise Business into Chester.
In October Jane was a Finalist Newcomer of the Year
at the Rosemary Conley Convention. Pictured with
Rosemary Conley, Jane said I am thrilled to be bring-
ing Rosemarys successful formula of Diet and Exer-
cise to my home town and the ladies of Chester. Our
classes bring ladies together in a very positive way.
We have fun learning about nutrition, a healthy low
fat low calorie diet, and of course we do the exercise.
Now running 17 Classes in Chester and Wirral, Jane
has 3 qualified and experienced Instructors to as-
sist her. We wish Jane every success with her new
Classes.

GardeninG jobs
for january
GardeninG by Janet HeatH
January is often thought of as the
colourless month of the year but there
are some plants that fower and others
that provide colour, shape and
form.
Hellebore orientalis will
often fower in milder
weather in January
and their pink, white
and deep velvety
plum fowers lift the
spirit in these short
days. Cut off most
of their large leaves
and the fowers will
be visible. Structural
seed heads such as
Sedums look beautiful
when frosted so dont
cut them down. Winter
jasmine (Jasminum
nudiforum) and
winter fowering
heathers (Erica)
will also fower in
January.
Evergreen plants
come into their own in
winter and you may want
to consider a large structural
shrub for year round foliage
and form. Try Fatsia japonica if you
have a sheltered space which does not get
the early morning frost. This plant has large
glossy light green leaves that will give a dull
corner continuous leaf colour. With groups
of different coloured hellebores planted
around the base it would look wonderful
throughout the dark months. Garrya elliptica
is a shrub with evergreen leaves and silvery
green catkins that look as though Christmas
decorations have been hung on the branches.
There are some tasks that
can be done in January in
preparation for spring.
Dig over and level any
ground you want to
have ready for spring
planting such as new
borders or vegetable
beds. Dont do this
if the soil is very
wet as it will cause
compaction of the soil.
Prune back overgrown
Clematis montana,
wisteria and ornamental
vines whilst the leaves
are off the plants. This
will enable you to
see the structure of
the plants. Continue
to prune other
overgrown shrubs.
Make sure that
any dahlia tubers or
gladioli corms lifted for
overwintering, are kept dry
and frost free. Cover more
delicate plants with horticultural
feece in freezing weather to prevent
losing them over winter.
Weed the garden making sure that you get
the roots out especially of plants such as
dandelion and bittercress. The latter sets seed
so fast that you need to get rid of it before it
fowers.

Some musings about Hoole with Andy Medcraft
Happy New Year
A smAll patch of white clings to the slates opposite, just out of the reach of the
early afternoon sun as it creeps around the chimneys and throws a crisp light into
my newly stark living room.
The chill that hangs in the air is simply metaphysical. The warmth of Christmas still resonates
through me and although I am more a Disney drop-out rather than Santas Little Helper, it is with a
sense of sadness that I packed away the decorations for another year.
The whole festive thing candy coated my world for a few weeks. Upbeat sing-a-long soundtracks
encouraged everybody to spend a bit more and to smile as we handed over our hard-earned cash
in return for what some might say were overpriced baubles. And for once those slightly cynical
some did not include me.
The overspill of beaming parents clutching small children with glow sticks after the Hoole
Christmas light switch on warmed a place in my heart that had been entirely deep frozen for what
seemed like my entire adult life to-date. I even chased the Coca-Cola lorry to Cheshire Oaks,
crawled into Chester at stupid oclock to cheer on the Santa dash and contemplated a seasonal
inspired latte from Starbucks - although the placard-waving protesters blocking the entrance
reminded me that at this most wonderful time of the year, paying over the odds for eggnog
flavoured hot milk to a company that has avoided paying its taxes does somewhat dampen the
Christmas cheer.
Every year, on the run up to Christmas, I fall foul of the infamous man flu. And, every year, I
do my bit to attack it. My mother is a firm believer in prevention rather than cure and with that
in mind I popped into the Groves Herbal dispensary in Charles Street to top up on Echinacea.
Unfortunately my best intentions were flawed as it sat on the kitchen worktop until I began the
nose blowing and therefore my mothers wise words resonated in my mucus filled skull but even
with the weight of the near-death experience for those two days that rendered me helpless and
pathetic, I still embraced the sickly sweet daytime soft focused movies of good will to all men with
much ho ho-ing and even a partridge in a pear tree.
But now that Christmas is over, we are returned to our former selves and it would appear that
those few weeks of hugging everybody and wishing them a merry Christmas was the only time of
the year that doesnt result in a citizens arrest and restraining order.
Being back to the hum-drum of daily life sees us returning to our insular ways. We begin to smile
only at those we know and return to our comfort zone of living in modest fear of those we dont.
So, with the knowledge that Christmas cheer has a limited shelf life, my aim for January is not to
write a list of resolutions. It is simply to savour the flavour of the festivities as well as taking full
advantage of the insular fall out and sculpt my year from it.
Without further ado, I wish you a very happy, healthy and successful year because we are what
we create, so lets all embrace 2013 and make sure its a good one for us all. Im of now for a
reasonably unseasonal inspired latte at cafe.com and I promise to crack a few smiles on route
even if I dont know the recipients.
