POLIGON A History
and Future of Change
Much has changed in the thirty years
since POLIGON built the first tubular steel
park shelter. While a new shelter may have
the same silhouette as an earlier model,
POLIGON continually upgrades and
improves the structure, materials and
processes to make our products the best.
Here is how POLIGON continues to excel:
DESIGNING THE BEST
BUILDINGS IN THE BUSINESS
Our bolt-together steel frames, clean
design, engineering and hidden fasteners
revolutionized shelter design. POLIGON
continues to be at the forefront of shelter
design with over 10,000 of the industrys
best gazebos, shelters, pavilions, pergolas
and trellises manufactured. POLIGON
also helps clients bring their custom
designs to life. Our skilled design team
welcomes this challenge and the opportu-
nity to assist customers directly.
INVESTING IN TECHNOLOGY
Our manufacturing facilities include com-
puter-aided saws, punches, plate and tube
lasers, part identification machines, an
eight direction shot blaster and an in-
house environmentally friendly powder
coat line. Our detailers and designers
work with state-of-the-art design software
that interfaces directly with computerized
manufacturing equipment.
EMPHASIZING CUSTOMER
SATISFACTION
By coordinating shipping schedules with
our just in time continuous flow shop
process, POLIGON maintains our high pri-
ority of on-time shipments. Customer
concerns are always given top priority with
immediate personal attention by our
Quality Specialists.
COMMITTING TO QUALITY
POLIGONs Quality Management System was
developed using the ISO standard as a model
and has both a full time Certified Welding
Inspector and Quality Manager on staff.
MAINTAINING A
TOP-NOTCH TEAM
PorterCorp employs over 100 of the
brightest, most professional and dedicat-
ed workers around. From manufacturing
to engineering and sales, the entire
PorterCorp team takes great pride in cre-
ating shelters that enhance communities
across the globe.
POLIGON forever changed the way shel-
ters look with the introduction of the first
tubular steel park shelter in 1976, and
were changing things still today. What
remains the same, however, is our dedica-
tion to excellence. Synonymous with
beautiful, high-quality shelters, POLIGON
continues to define top of the line.
Some things dont change.
NOTE: Weve changed our model num-
bering system on all polygonal (more than
four-sided) shelters and gazebos. Our
shelters have traditionally been measured
column to column. This made POLIGON
shelters seem smaller when compared to
shelters measured eave point to eave
point. To alleviate comparison confusion
in specifications, model numbers have
been altered to reflect an eave point to
eave point measurement. Heres an exam-
ple: old number: GOC 24; new number:
GCO27. All shelters affected by this
change are shown with both the old and
new model numbers above the correspon-
ding line drawing. For a complete cross
reference chart, contact POLIGON or visit
our website at www.poligon.com.
&
STANDARD POLIGON SHELTERS
Any shelter shown in this catalog with a cata-
log number and an elevation line drawing is
considered Standard. Standard shelters are
priced cafeteria style. Shelters start with a
shot-blast and powder coated frame and roof
deck only. (Any exceptions will be noted on
the submittal.) Other features can be added
except where noted in this catalog. Standard
shelters are offered with a choice of 27 pow-
der coat colors for frame and three distinct
options in roof decks:
24 gauge steel Kynar-painted Multi-Rib
(also acts as roofing)
2x6 T&G Southern Yellow Pine roof deck
4 thick sandwich panels with clear luan
faced 5/8 plywood, grooved 4 OC.
Roofing is an added option except when Multi Rib
(R panel) is used as a roof deck and roofing
together. Metal roof systems come with a choice
of Kynar colors (see page 51 for color selection).
Standard shelters are engineered and built to sus-
tain 100 MPH wind loads, 30 PSF roof snow loads
and 35.7 PSF ground snow loads. Shelters come
with a one step pinned base except when heav-
ier loads require a fixed base.
POLIGON STANDARD ADD-ONS
Standard POLIGON add-ons are a variety of
features that may be added cafeteria-style to
POLIGON Standard Shelters, POLIGON
Special Shelters and Custom Shelters.
Standard add-ons are:
E-coating of entire frame
E-coating of ornamentation (highly recom-
mended)
Prime coat (deduct option)
Clear coat over powder coat
Cupolas (except where noted)
Multi-Rib (R panel) roofing over roof deck
Medallion-Lok (standing seam) roofing
Asphalt shingles
Cedar shingles
Wind screens
Integrated seating
Custom shape or size, banded, or
decorative columns
Ornamentation and handrails
Laser cut nameplate
Professional Engineer stamped drawings
Higher wind and/or snow load capacities
Electrical access
Outlet box cutouts
Lightning protection
Galvanizing
Anchor bolts
Added height under tension member
POLIGON SPECIAL SHELTERS
POLIGON Specials utilize standard POLIGON
shelters as a beginning, but go on to employ
custom colors, components, shapes, roof
pitch, non-standard loads, or materials. These
changes can beautify, connect, divide, struc-
turally or cosmetically enhance the shelter.
CUSTOM SHELTERS
Custom shelters stand completely outside of
standard POLIGON designs. They may have
different shapes, sizes, junctures, and details,
and require a completely new set of engineer-
ing drawings. These shelters generally have no
outward or internal visual resemblance to stan-
dard POLIGON products.

here is something about a Dome that
implies a center of activitycenter for
the arts, place of respect, symbol of
authority, or final tributelike no other
type of structure.
With the ability to laser-cut steel in unlim-
ited shapes, POLIGON has created a sim-
ple way to build Domes. POLIGON
Domes are available in the same standard
frame and roof colors as the rest of the
POLIGON line.
The POLIGON Dome system uses Kynar
painted metal roofing sheets cut and formed
into shingle-strip beams that clip in place.
This system is further enhanced by 3Ms new
adhesive that bonds the dome together.
The final result is a pre-engineered Dome
that imparts all of the character and dis-
tinction associated with this timeless
shape; yet can be erected with the ease
and precision associated with POLIGON.

The competition invites all American
Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA)
members to submit original designs for a
site-specific shelter that both mirrors and
enhances its natural surroundings and ties
in with that years competition theme. In
exchange for design rights, POLIGON
agrees to manufacture the winning shelter
free of charge, showcase it at the Annual
ASLA Expo and donate it to a city and site
of the winners choosing.
The 2004 winner, the Western Skyline,
was submitted by the Salt Lake City firm
Landmark Design, Inc., and displayed at
the Poligon booth at the ASLA Exposition.
Following the show, the building was
donated to the city of Salt Lake to be
erected at Wasatch Hollow Park.
The runner up was the Santa Fe by
Jesse Scott of Sites Southwest in
Albuquerque, NM.
REFLECTING PLACE is open to all ASLA
members in the country.

petition, visit www.poligon.com or contact

All operators and welders have been
trained on our Manufacturing Operating
Procedures and Standards documents.
This helps ensure that the product is
made correctly the first time.
All operators and welders inspect
their own work. The product they are
working on is checked and stamped
off at each step in the process.
The Quality Assurance Staff performs
audits on products before shipment.
Steel frame members are etched with
the job# and part#. This ensures
accurate job tracking in our plant and
identification of parts in the field.
Finishing
Shot Blast
Mechanically cleans the surface (pre-
treatment) prior to finish coat.
Blasts to near white conditions.
Steel Structures Painting Council
(SSPC) (SP-10), Near-white condi-
tion Cleaning: The removal of 95%
of all visible rust, mill scale and other
contaminants by blast cleaning.
Use where maximum surface prepa-
ration is required and high cost is
warranted. Recommended for cor-
rosive environments.
Improves surface adhesion by pro-
viding a surface profile conducive to
receiving paint.
Removes surface defects so the
surface finish is uniform in appear-
ance.
Mechanical cleaning is sometimes
the only way to remove excessive dirt,
rust or scale. (taken from Powder
Coating 4th Edition Published by
CCAI)
Powder Coat
Parts are visually inspected before
and after powder coat for defects.
Powder coating process is computer
controlled and monitored to ensure a
consistent high quality shelter finish.
Wash system is tested on a daily basis
and cleaned on a regular basis.
Powder is stored in an environmen-
tally controlled room to maintain
performance.
After powder coat finish, each job is
tested for color, thickness of the fin-
ish, gloss, adhesion and cure.

Roofing Materials,
Frame Finishes
POLIGON offers 4 protective
finish systems. The first step in
the finish process is to shot
blast the steel. This 8-direc-
tion process cleans the metal to
near white. It strips away mill
scale, welding slag, oils and
other contaminants, leaving a
super clean surface for the
coating to adhere to.
System #1 Powder Coating
is our most popular and econom-
ical finish. The steel is coated
with a Super-Durable Polyester
TGIC Powder. This finish is
designed for excellent outdoor
durability and fade resistance. It
is tough, resilient and will with-
stand harsh environments while
retaining its smooth high-gloss
finish for years to come.
System #2 E-Coat Undercoat
combines a dip process with an
el ectro-deposi ti on appl i ed
epoxy coating that bonds to the
steel. The combination of E-
coating and powder coating is
our most durable finish and rec-
ommended for coastal applica-
tions or other humid climates.
System #3 Powder Coat Primer
is electrostatically applied when
field painting is required and pro-
vides a good base for other
paints. The corrosion protection
of Polyester TGIC powder coat
primer is superior to typical water-
based red oxide primers.
System #4 Hot Dip Galvanizing
is a simple, long-accepted method
of protecting steel from rust. It
works best on plain sheets, basic
tubes and other uncomplicated
parts, resulting in a spangled silver
finish. It provides the best corro-
sion protection in salt-air condi-
tions but is also the most expen-
sive finishing system. It is possible
to powder coat over galvanized
steel, however the hot dip finish is
not smooth and irregularities are
likely to occur.

resistant finish on the ceiling side, and covered with
a roofing material of the owners choice. POLIGON
can provide asphalt shingles, cedar shingles, multi-
rib or standing seam metal roofing.
The roof deck is made of 4 1/2 thick Structural
Insulated Panels (SIPs). Panels are for structural
loading as code listed NER 467. The roof deck top
surface is 7/16 thick OSB. The core is 3 5/8
thick EPS foam and the exposed ceiling is 5/8 luan

Custom
Colors
POLIGON offers 27 standard powder coating
color choices for your shelter. In many cases its
possible to match the frame to metal roof colors,
shown in the Color Availability Matrix, below.
Custom colors for frames are also possible.
When trying to exactly match a color, keep in
mind that not all colors are colorfast and some
may fade when exposed to UV rays. Since the
pigments used to develop custom colors are
environmentally friendly, this may limit the
range of color choices. Matching colors also
requires additional lead time and cost.
CUSTOM COLOR ORDERING PROCESS
1. Submit a sample of the desired color
swatch, a minimum of 3 x 3 to
POLIGON.
2. POLIGON will develop as close a match as
possible without sacrificing colorfastness
or environmental considerations. We will
submit two 3 x 5 powder coated color
samples for review and approval.
3. If acceptable, one sample shall be signed
and dated by the customer and returned
to POLIGON. Upon receipt of the
approved sample, a custom batch of color
will be produced.
4. If not acceptable, return one sample and
describe the nature of the correction
desired. POLIGON will develop one more
color sample and submit it for approval.
5. Production of a custom color will not
begin until an approved sample is
received by POLIGON.
6. Additional time is required for custom
colors, affecting delivery lead time.
7. The process also requires special pricing
to cover the cost of development time
and materials.
