OLIGON offers two Dugout
shelter models, center column
(DUG-CC) and offset column
(DUG-OC). They are available as
modular units. Integrated bench
seating, with or without back rests,
is an option on both models, and is
available in all three lengths.
Benches are made of Durawood, a

The competition invites all American
Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA)
members to submit original designs for a
site-specific shelter that both mirrors and
enhances its natural surroundings and ties
in with that years competition theme. In
exchange for design rights, POLIGON
agrees to manufacture the winning shelter
free of charge, showcase it at the Annual
ASLA Expo and donate it to a city and site
of the winners choosing.
The 2004 winner, the Western Skyline,
was submitted by the Salt Lake City firm
Landmark Design, Inc., and displayed at
the Poligon booth at the ASLA Exposition.
Following the show, the building was
donated to the city of Salt Lake to be
erected at Wasatch Hollow Park.
The runner up was the Santa Fe by
Jesse Scott of Sites Southwest in
Albuquerque, NM.
REFLECTING PLACE is open to all ASLA
members in the country.

petition, visit www.poligon.com or contact

erected quickly by maintenance crews or
skilled volunteer labor. Most large
POLIGON structures require professional

All Welders are certified in GMAW.
All POLIGON welding is certified to
AWS D1.1 by Welding Engineer,
Certified Welding Inspector, Cert
#03050023 and Associate Welding
Inspector, Cert #97040084 General
Manufacturing.
All operators and welders have been
trained on our Manufacturing Operating
Procedures and Standards documents.
This helps ensure that the product is
made correctly the first time.
All operators and welders inspect
their own work. The product they are
working on is checked and stamped
off at each step in the process.
The Quality Assurance Staff performs
audits on products before shipment.
Steel frame members are etched with
the job# and part#. This ensures
accurate job tracking in our plant and
identification of parts in the field.
Finishing
Shot Blast
Mechanically cleans the surface (pre-
treatment) prior to finish coat.
Blasts to near white conditions.
Steel Structures Painting Council
(SSPC) (SP-10), Near-white condi-
tion Cleaning: The removal of 95%
of all visible rust, mill scale and other
contaminants by blast cleaning.
Use where maximum surface prepa-
ration is required and high cost is
warranted. Recommended for cor-
rosive environments.
Improves surface adhesion by pro-
viding a surface profile conducive to
receiving paint.
Removes surface defects so the
surface finish is uniform in appear-
ance.
Mechanical cleaning is sometimes
the only way to remove excessive dirt,
rust or scale. (taken from Powder
Coating 4th Edition Published by
CCAI)
Powder Coat
Parts are visually inspected before
and after powder coat for defects.
Powder coating process is computer
controlled and monitored to ensure a
consistent high quality shelter finish.
Wash system is tested on a daily basis
and cleaned on a regular basis.
Powder is stored in an environmen-
tally controlled room to maintain
performance.
After powder coat finish, each job is
tested for color, thickness of the fin-
ish, gloss, adhesion and cure.

andrails are available in
Ornamental and Safety Orna-
mental styles. Safety handrails are 42
high with picket spacing no wider than
4. Safety handrails must be used in
shelters elevated more than 4.
Ornamental handrails are normally
used in shelters at ground level unless
site-specific code requirements are in
effect. Any of the handrail designs
shown can be manufactured at 42
high. Corbels (side brackets) are an
optional item. Custom handrails and
ornamentation can be developed to
your design specifications.

Roofing Materials,
Frame Finishes
POLIGON offers 4 protective
finish systems. The first step in
the finish process is to shot
blast the steel. This 8-direc-
tion process cleans the metal to
near white. It strips away mill
scale, welding slag, oils and
other contaminants, leaving a
super clean surface for the
coating to adhere to.
System #1 Powder Coating
is our most popular and econom-
ical finish. The steel is coated
with a Super-Durable Polyester
TGIC Powder. This finish is
designed for excellent outdoor
durability and fade resistance. It
is tough, resilient and will with-
stand harsh environments while
retaining its smooth high-gloss
finish for years to come.
System #2 E-Coat Undercoat
combines a dip process with an
el ectro-deposi ti on appl i ed
epoxy coating that bonds to the
steel. The combination of E-
coating and powder coating is
our most durable finish and rec-
ommended for coastal applica-
tions or other humid climates.
System #3 Powder Coat Primer
is electrostatically applied when
field painting is required and pro-
vides a good base for other
paints. The corrosion protection
of Polyester TGIC powder coat
primer is superior to typical water-
based red oxide primers.
System #4 Hot Dip Galvanizing
is a simple, long-accepted method
of protecting steel from rust. It
works best on plain sheets, basic
tubes and other uncomplicated
parts, resulting in a spangled silver
finish. It provides the best corro-
sion protection in salt-air condi-
tions but is also the most expen-
sive finishing system. It is possible
to powder coat over galvanized
steel, however the hot dip finish is
not smooth and irregularities are
likely to occur.

24 gauge Kynar painted galvanized steel roof pan-
els are applied directly to the frame to make the
roof deck and roofing in one step The system
comes complete with matching colored trim and
fasteners. Poligons metal roofing trim is hemmed
and reinforced for added stability. NOTE: METAL
ROOFING SHOULD NOT BE USED ALONE
WHERE CONDENSATION IS A CONCERN. USE
WITH A T&G OR SIPS ROOF DECK .
Traditional tongue & groove makes an attractive
interior ceiling. 2x 6 planks are shipped in ran-
dom lengths and are field cut at installation. The
planks should be sealed with appropriate weather
resistant finish on the ceiling side, and covered with
a roofing material of the owners choice. POLIGON
can provide asphalt shingles, cedar shingles, multi-
rib or standing seam metal roofing.
The roof deck is made of 4 1/2 thick Structural
Insulated Panels (SIPs). Panels are for structural
loading as code listed NER 467. The roof deck top
surface is 7/16 thick OSB. The core is 3 5/8
thick EPS foam and the exposed ceiling is 5/8 luan
faced plywood with grooves 4 on center. SIPs are
covered with a roofing of asphalt shingles, cedar
shingles, multi-rib or standing seam metal roofing.

Custom
Colors
POLIGON offers 27 standard powder coating
color choices for your shelter. In many cases its
possible to match the frame to metal roof colors,
shown in the Color Availability Matrix, below.
Custom colors for frames are also possible.
When trying to exactly match a color, keep in
mind that not all colors are colorfast and some
may fade when exposed to UV rays. Since the
pigments used to develop custom colors are
environmentally friendly, this may limit the
range of color choices. Matching colors also
requires additional lead time and cost.
CUSTOM COLOR ORDERING PROCESS
1. Submit a sample of the desired color
swatch, a minimum of 3 x 3 to
POLIGON.
2. POLIGON will develop as close a match as
possible without sacrificing colorfastness
or environmental considerations. We will
submit two 3 x 5 powder coated color
samples for review and approval.
3. If acceptable, one sample shall be signed
and dated by the customer and returned
to POLIGON. Upon receipt of the
approved sample, a custom batch of color
will be produced.
4. If not acceptable, return one sample and
describe the nature of the correction
desired. POLIGON will develop one more
color sample and submit it for approval.
5. Production of a custom color will not
begin until an approved sample is
received by POLIGON.
6. Additional time is required for custom
colors, affecting delivery lead time.
7. The process also requires special pricing
to cover the cost of development time
and materials.
