Godbole Abstract
Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) (also known as Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS), or IMT Single Carrier (IMT-SC), or Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) is a digital mobile phone technology that allows improved data transmission rates as a backward-compatible extension of GSM. EDGE is considered a pre-3G radio technology and is part of ITU's 3G definition.[1] EDGE was deployed on GSM networks beginning in 2003 initially by Cingular (now AT&T) in the United States.[2] EDGE is standardized also by 3GPP as part of the GSM family. Through the introduction of sophisticated methods of coding and transmitting data, EDGE delivers higher bit-rates per radio channel, resulting in a threefold increase in capacity and performance compared with an ordinary GSM/GPRS connection. EDGE can be used for any packet switched application, such as an Internet connection. Evolved EDGE continues in Release 7 of the 3GPP standard providing reduced latency and more than doubled performance e.g. to complement High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA). Peak bit-rates of up to 1Mbit/s and typical bit-rates of 400kbit/s can be expected. EDGE technology is an extended version of GSM. It allows the clear and fast transmission of data and information. EDGE is also termed as IMT-SC or single carrier. EDGE technology was invented and introduced by Cingular, which is now known as AT& T. EDGE is radio technology and is a part of third generation technologies. EDGE technology is preferred over GSM due to its flexibility to carry packet switch data and circuit switch data.

EDGE technology
EDGE is termed as backward compatible technology; backward compatible technology is that technology which allows the input generation of older devices. EDGE technology is supported by third generation partnership projects; this

association helps and supports the up gradation of GSM, EDGE technology and other related technologies. The frequency, capability and performance of EDGE technology is more than the 2G GSM Technology. EDGE technology hold more sophisticated coding and transmission of data. EDGE technology can help you connect to the internet. This technology supports the packet switching system. EDGE develops a broadband internet connection for its users. EDGE technology helps its users to exploit the multimedia services .EDGE technology do not involve the expense of additional hardware and software technologies. It only requires the base station to install EDGE technology transceiver. EDGE technology is an improved technology which almost supports all the network vendors. All they have to do is to upgrade their stations. EDGE technology has its edge because it can make use of both switch circuit technology and packet circuit technology. EDGE technology is also believed to support EGPRS or in other words enhanced general packet radio service. It is important to have GPRS network if one wants to use EDGE technology because EDGE can not work without GSM Technology. Therefore it is an extended version of GSM Technology. Technology EDGE/EGPRS is implemented as a bolt-on enhancement for 2.5G GSM/GPRS networks, making it easier for existing GSM carriers to upgrade to it. EDGE is a superset to GPRS and can function on any network with GPRS deployed on it, provided the carrier implements the necessary upgrade. EDGE requires no hardware or software changes to be made in GSM core networks. EDGE-compatible transceiver units must be installed and the base station subsystem needs to be upgraded to support EDGE. If the operator already has this in place, which is often the case today, the network can be upgraded to EDGE by activating an optional software feature. Today EDGE is supported by all major chip vendors for both GSM and WCDMA/HSPA.

Evolved EDGE
Evolved EDGE improves on EDGE in a number of ways. Latencies are reduced by lowering the Transmission Time Interval by half (from 20 ms to 10 ms). Bit rates are increased up to 1 Mbit/s peak bandwidth and latencies down to 80 ms using dual carrier, higher symbol rate and higher-order modulation (32QAM and 16QAM instead of 8PSK), and turbo codes to improve error correction. And finally signal quality is improved using dual antennas improving average bit-rates

and spectrum efficiency. EDGE Evolution can be gradually introduced as software upgrades, taking advantage of the installed base. With EDGE Evolution, endusers will be able to experience mobile internet connections corresponding to a 500 kbit/s ADSL service. For making the GSM (Global System for Mobiles) networks advance EDGE (Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution) technology is utilized; the technology enhances the data capacity of GPRS up to three times. As a result the EDGE providers have capacity to address three times more subscribers as compared to GPRS while providing them three times faster data rate along with giving away more options of voice communications. The EDGE subscribers could access the upgraded mobile services on the go such as MMS (Multimedia Message Service), emails, high speed internet and downloading or uploading music and video clips. The technology is also known as single carrier or IMT-SC invented by Cingular also called AT&T.

We are living in the age of technological revolution where newer modes of communications are substituting the older ones. The GSM technology has standard efficiency corresponding to 2G and 2.5G. The need for faster and efficient communications has stirred the mobile phone technology; the EDGE technology has served as a milestone in enhancing data speed with respect to GSM cell phone users. The global leader of mobile phone technology is GSM where EDGE is a third generation (3G) technology. The transceiver of EDGE technology needs nothing but the base station for installation; there is no expense of hardware or software for deploying EDGE technology. The structure of EDGE resembles to that of GSM network that enables it to be directly overlaid on the present structure of the GSM network; thus EDGE is also termed as backward compatible technology the input generation of older devices. EDGE could be explained as a software up gradation for most f the existing GSM networks. Virtually speaking, all current GSM infrastructure installations are also EDGE configured due to the negligible cost of updating the GSM network, the high to mid level GSM networks come with EDGE radio technology.

The Structure of Edge EDGE is the extension of GSM technology as the technology could not work without the GSM network. The symbol rate of both technologies is same. The modulation is a bit dissimilar as the EDGE technology provides three times faster data transmission rate.

The up gradation is enabled by the association of EDGE with 3G partnership projects thus making its performance better than 2G GSM with better data transmission and sophisticated coding that supports the system of packet switching. What gives EDGE technology an edge over rest of the technologies is its capacity to employee both the packet circuit technology and the switch circuit technology. The EGPRS (Enhanced General Packet Radio Service) would be supported with the EDGE technology. The technology makes use of 8PSK for the upper five modulation layers. The three bit phase carrier triples the gross data rate: travelling swiftly over the network enables the adept data flow. The wireless and internet access points are easily accessible. Contrary to GSM network, the EDGE technology propagates short messages service (SMS) and MMS in a fast pace. The technology has augmented the number of internet and mobile phone subscribers. Facilities like internet browsing and videos surfing and downloading are aided and the GPRS and GSM users around the world could use same services in better pace.

EDGE technology has multiplied the users of mobiles phones as speedy internet access is in palm. The data transfer is accomplished in seconds; the GPRS technology takes 6 seconds in transferring a 40KB file where the file takes only 2 seconds on EDGE. The exploitation of EDGE technology is expenses-free. All GPRS and GSM users can make most of the technology with a single installation. Rysavy Research and 3G Americas. 2007-09-01. pp. 5865.
