Demonstrative adjectives and pronouns

esse, esses essa, essas

Study these words: esse (m. s.) esses (m .pl.) essa (f. s.) essas (f. pl.) that thing / person those things / people that thing / person those things / people near the person the speaker is addressing

Examples:
esse rapaz (masculine singular) essa rapariga (feminine singular) esses rapazes (masculine plural) essas raparigas (feminine plural) Essa cidade deve ser muito bonita. Esses planos no servem. that boy that girl those boys those girls That city (you are talking about) must be very pretty. Those plans (you just talked about) are no good.

Note: esse, essa, esses, essas can be used both as adjectives and pronouns:
A: De quem esse (adjective) livro a? B: meu, mas esse (pronoun) a teu. Whose is that book there? Its mine, but that one there is yours.

As can be seen in the examples above, when used as adjectives esse, essas, esses, essas, come in front of the noun, and as pronouns they usually stand together with the verbs Ser and Estar.

Note also: The word a usually follows esse, esses, essa, essas to stress nearness in
relation to the person being addressed: Esses sapatos a so muito bonitos Those shoes there (near the person addressed) are very nice.

Possessive pronouns

Study these words: meu, meus, minha, minhas, teu, tua, teus, tuas (O) meu my/mine (masculine singular) (A) minha- my/mine (feminine singular) (O) teu your/yours (masculine singular) (A) tua your/yours (feminine singular (O)s meus my/mine (masculine plural) (As) minhas my/mine (feminine plural) (Os) teus your/yours (masculine plural) (As) tuas your/yours (feminine plural)

The possessive pronouns above indicate possession and must agree in gender and number with the thing possessed. Meu, minha, meus, minhas refer to I and mean my, mine. Teu, tua, teus, tuas refer to you (second person singular) and mean your, yours

Note: a) In the sequence possessive + noun the definite article (o/os/a/as) precedes
the possessive: Este no o meu livro. O meu livro aquele ali. - This is not my book. My book is that one over there.

b) No definite article (o/a/os/as) is used when the possessive pronoun

stands alone: Esta mala no minha.. Estes dicionrios no so teus. Este casa minha. Esta calculadora no tua. This bag/purse is not mine. These dictionaries are not yours. This house is mine. This calculator is not yours.

The demonstrative adjectives and pronouns esse, essa, esses, essas (that one , those ones) indicate something near to or associated with the person being addressed or something already mentioned. As adjectives, they are placed before the noun, and their form depends on the gender and number of the noun they precede. As pronouns, they agree in gender and number with the nouns they stand for. Singular Plural For example: esse rapaz (masculine singular) essa rapariga (feminine singular) esses rapazes (masculine plural) essas raparigas (feminine plural) Essa cidade deve ser muito bonita.
