February 2012 - Issue

Its a Family Affair

Family Day 2012 was a huge success, as around 2,000 ADAT staff and their families flocked to the Armed Forces Officers Club and Hotel for a day of glorious sunshine, entertainment and team activities.
Stiltwalkers, clowns and face-painters were among the attractions for the many children who attended, who also enjoyed ice cream, crepes with chocolate sauce and cupcakes in ADAT company colors. However, the highlight of the day (apart from the buffet lunch, of course) was undoubtedly the Parade of Nations. Representatives of 51 different nationalities from among the ADAT family took to the concrete catwalk to model their national dress, turning the Officers Club into a feast of colour and reminding everyone what a cosmopolitan place to work ADAT is.

(continued from front page) Meanwhile the games were keenly contested. Avionics won the sack race, while Components came out on top in the tug of war. Individual honours went to Jefferson Tania in the individual sack race, Mohammed Awadat and Ahmed Roshdy in the wrestling and Louisa Spencer in the junior sack race. A one-off tug of war match between ADAT management and the organizing committee ended in a controversial win for the management team! Abdul Khaliq Saeed said: It was a pleasure to see everyone enjoying themselves and participating in the many activities. It not only allowed us to spend time together on a personal level, it also brought us together outside of work as a dedicated team. This show of teamwork was encouraging to see during the friendly competition during the event, and I ask you to bring that positive energy to your daily work at ADAT. I would also like to thank the organizers and sponsors for helping us make this a memorable event. Join the Q
You might have heard of Q-Pulse. You might know it is something to do with Quality Assurance. But you probably dont know much more about it. Rola Ghazi from AFS and Tamer Eltanbadawy from QA explain: Q: Can you tell us what Q-Pulse is? Rola: Its a new piece of software that allows us to log all ADATs data relating to Quality & Safety, and Customer & Supplier Management in one place. Q: What does it actually do? Rola: Whenever an audit is conducted anywhere in ADAT, Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) are raised using Q-Pulse, and then we can track them from the moment of raising in the system until they are closed. If, for any reason, the action owner doesnt address an issue before the target date, an automatic email alert is triggered by Q-Pulse. And if it is still not addressed, the overdue item is escalated automatically to higher management. Tamer: We also use it for Occurrence and Investigation management and customer complaints, using the same alert / escalation concept. Q: Why is this important, and what are the benefits? Tamer: Its important because of course we are all trying to reduce the chance of an incident, and therefore ultimately to improve customer satisfaction. Its a paperless system, which means things dont get lost or missed, and we can identify common issues that keep happening (which was more difficult when they were just logged on paper) and take preventative measures to stop them happening again. Its a good tool for root cause analysis of an issue for example, the answer might be that a staff member needs

to go on a training course and for statistics and management of risk. It also maintains a register of correspondence with customers, but dont worry it records compliments from satisfied customers as well as complaints! Q: What future plans do we have for it? Tamer: We are working towards having all injuries logged into Q-Pulse through a newly designed form. We will also extend Investigation reports to cover other areas like SH&E Occurrence Investigation Reports and Warranty Investigation reports, later this year.

airberlin C-Checks completed

We recently saw the completion of the last in a series of eight A330 C-Checks carried out for airberlin, all of which ran smoothly and every one of which departed on time. Our team and the airberlin team have struck up a very strong and effective working partnership and we look forward to renewing this relationship in the future, said Paul Horstink, VP Airframe Services. It is a great credit to everyone who worked on this project that airberlin spoke so highly of ADATs workmanship, cooperation and friendliness, while for our part I know that our staff enjoyed working with the airberlin team. Chiratidzo Mutyavaviri, Senior Customer Support Coordinator added: The airberlin team ethic was a key factor in helping us to deliver the goods on time, and our team were also very impressed by their material support no check was delayed because of spares that were the customers responsibility. Even on the rib 18 modifications that had very tight deadlines, we worked together so well that all the projects were finished on time.

Closer working on technical training

The first signs of closer working between ADAT and SR Technics under the umbrella of the MRO Network have been visible recently as the integration of our two technical training teams has begun to take place. The process officially began with a joint meeting between the ADAT team and the SR Technics team here in Abu Dhabi at the end of January (pictured). The new integrated team will be led by Markus Buergin, who says it is great news for both customers and staff: The technical training departments of ADAT and SR Technics are quite complementary as each brings different strengths. The integration will allow us to build on these strengths to offer a more efficient, streamlined service that will bring added value to third party customers like Etihad, as well as better meet our own internal technical training needs. Customers will also be able to look forward to improved facilities, and to innovative new products that can meet their evolving needs. And now not only the SR Technics staff here in Abu Dhabi, but also ADAT trainers can access the additional resources available in Zurich more easily. In total, the combined group will have over 60 qualified instructors serving more than 30 airline customers worldwide.

Congratulations
Congratulations are due to three members of the ADAT team who have successfully graduated after more than seven years of study. Ali Albaloushi, Mohammed Alzaabi and Turky Alhammadi (L-R) all UAE Nationals, have each gained degrees in Applied Science and Engineering Management from the Higher Colleges of Technology the end of a long road of study that began when they joined the company in 2004 as aviation engineers. The trio have worked together and studied part-time ever since, first achieving diplomas as aviation engineers, then higher diplomas, becoming technicians, and then earning their basic licenses from the GCAA in 2010. Recently they have moved from the hangar floor to Customer Support, where they work with aircraft managers, production planning and materials to ensure customer satisfaction. Mohammed says they have become very good friends after all this time: Yes, were like brothers! Aviation has been our passion for a long time and now weve graduated were all looking forward to doing something special in our field. Khalifa Abujamhoor, Vice President for Human Resources said: These three young men deserve our congratulations for their hard work and commitment. They have bright futures ahead of them with ADAT and we look forward to seeing them make many more contributions to the business. I have no doubt that they will approach their careers with the same dedication they have shown so far.

Employee of the Month Mansoor Hameed Qazi

The first ADAT Employee of the Month award of 2012 has gone to Mansoor Hameed Qazi, Junior Engineer in the Production Planning Department, Airframe Services. Abdul Khaliq Saeed presented Mansoor with a certificate and a cash prize at a ceremony held in the Hangar 6 cafeteria last week in recognition of his work on creating the Maintenance Requirements (MRs) for components for Etihads fleet. With a range of aircraft including the B777, A340, A330, A320, Maximus and MIDEX A300 Aviation Maintenance System (AMS), plus the Presidential Flight AMS, this project involved dealing with more than 5000 different components. Mansoors work helped ADAT meet deadlines and avoid financial penalties, by ensuring that there were no hidden factors associated with the creation of MRs and their interface with cMRO. Whenever he found mistakes in the system he corrected them, saving the company a potential AED500,000 per item. Mansoor also resolved legal issues that prevented AOGs & shortfalls, resulting in the delivery of timely and defect-free quality work to the customer. Mansoor trained employees in the troubleshooting processes for cMRO issues by drilling down to root-cause analysis, and then delivered solutions that allowed aircraft requirements to be built more efficiently in cMRO than the

previous IT system would allow. Many of the lessons learned were used on subsequent projects, allowing Planners to optimize their man-hours for more productive work.

Long Layover
What was Electrician your first position? Tell us a bit about your role: My team is responsible for all the electrical systems and fire systems across ADAT. Facilities works with all areas of the business. So we arent directly involved with production but we like to say production starts from us! Favorite memory of your time here? It would have to be when i was first promoted, to senior technician. That was a very proud moment. What has changed most during your time here? Everything has changed. When i first joined we only had one hangar, and 7 or 8 buildings. Our role has changed, too. Recently we have been consulted more on the design of electrical systems for new buildings like hangars, and actually all the electrical systems and fire systems for the wheels and brakes building were designed by our team. What do you like to do outside of work? Photography, driving, and cooking at home.

A new feature in which we take a closer look at some of our members of staff who are celebrating anniversaries of long and committed service. Name: Mudassar Hussain Hashmi Position: Principal Technician, Electrical (Facilities) Originally from: Lahore, Pakistan Date of joining: February 5, 1987 (25 years)
