Mr. Keith Johnson, City Manager City of Miamisburg 600 North Main St.

Miamisburg, OH 45342 Bishop Leibold School 6666 Springboro Pike Dayton, OH 45449 10/25/2012 Dear Mr. Keith Johnson: Im a sixth grader at Bishop Leibold School and my name is Stacey Mata, our class at Bishop Leibold sixth grade stem class made conclusions for chemicals people like us use in everyday life that may cause pollution. My team were making were making hypothesis of what will happen to our plants, because of different chemicals that were used on different plants everyones conclusions and information of supporting details were not all the same. To have an answer we experimented by having a container with regular potting soil and another mixed with the chemical, so our group chose car oil as the chemical being tested on and the plant being grass. We counted thirty grass seeds in each container, so that both plants being tested on will be the same to one another. We watered everyday with an appropriate amount of water that the plant needed to grow successfully. While observing the plant the container without the chemical grew and grew, but the container with the chemical did exactly the opposite by not growing as much and was growing slower compared with the other container. While studying the other teams plants some were not growing very well and looked as if it was poisoned in the other hand other plants that was tested on a different chemical looked perfect and even healthier than ever it just depended on what chemicals were used. For recommendations people that use chemicals outside their garage should be very careful with toxins near plants and use an object that would help try not to hurt the plants around. Some cars leak, so a good way to keep the oil outside the grass would be by using a square cardboard that would be able to consume the oil. This experiment helped find the answer by the help of the data supporting the answer by tracking how much one plant with a chemical can grow slower than another without a chemical being added. It depends on how much the plant will grow in the amount of time that is given. For stronger conclusions I would test different chemicals to different plants and come up with a way to stop what is hurting the environment or try to come up with something new that could help the environment with further testing. For I am keeping you updated on what chemicals may do to the environment, please try and help the environment. Best Regards,

Stacey Mata
