Issue of New Passport - General Guidelines (Time Required: Approx 45 Days) Please note that we do not retain original passports. Original passports need to be given to us only when the new passport arrives for cancellation of passports (NOT VISAS)

01. All passports should be machine readable. Hence no handwritten passports are being issued in line with the orders of Government of India. For more information on machine readable passports, please refer Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine-readable_passport) 02. The validity of a passport is ten years and it cannot be extended. Therefore, if the validity of passport is getting to be over, you would require to apply for a fresh passport (not renewal). However, in case a short validity passport has been issued, this passport can be renewed to its full term i.e., ten years. 03. Application for renewal (new booklet) of passport can be submitted if the final validity of the passport is less than one year. However it is recommended that you submit the passports six months ahead of the expiry period. 04. An Application Form for a new passport has to be submitted along with the old passport and copy of CERPAC (Residence Permit). 05. Applicants are advised to ensure that their application in the prescribed format is complete in all respects; that all columns are correctly and legibly filled up and no column left blank, unfilled/unresponded to or vaguely filled with a dash, tick, etc. All signatures in the application should be with ballpoint pen. 06. Your are required to thumbprint the application form only if you are unable to sign your name. 07. An applicant has the option to apply for an ordinary passport booklet of 36 pages or a Jumbo passport booklet of 64 pages of ten-year validity. (However, we strongly recommend that the applicants obtain a Jumbo Passport.) 08. An amount of Naira 900 will be charged extra for passports not issued in Nigeria. 09. A separate passport must be obtained by every individual. A child's name can no longer be endorsed on a parent's passport. 10. The applicant should submit the application in person for identification or through authorized representative. 11. Four recent high resolution glossy photographs of size 4.0 cm x 4.0 cm (40 mm x 40 mm) showing frontal view of full face ( not a close up of the face) in coloured civilian clothes against a white background taken in a studio should be submitted along with the application. Polaroid photographs and photographs with dark glasses or uniforms are not accepted. 12. Please ensure that the photographs are taken against white or light background (no black, red or other backgrounds). Photographs must taken with uniform lighting with no shadows, good contrast. 70-80% of the photograph must cover the head and chin area. ICAO have circulated a list of photographs with common problems and how to avoid. Click here to view them. Please note: Our photograph size is 4 cm and 4 cm (40 mm and 40 mm). Applications not meeting these requirements will not be accepted and we will not be responsible for delays in the application processing. Sample of recent photographs which had been rejected may be seen here. 13. In case of change of address in India, necessary proof is to be provided. Any of the following documents are considered acceptable proof. - electricity or water bill or a running bank statement, house allotment letter, property tax, income tax assessment orders, voters identity card, ration card. 14. It is an offence under the Passport Act 1967 to furnish false information in the application. Passport facilities could be denied on grounds of suppression of

material information, submission of incorrect particulars, willful damage/loss of passport or for unauthorised change/tampering. The Passport can be impounded or revoked for violation of one or more of the provisions of the Passport Act. Fines also can be imposed. 15. It is an offence to hold more than one valid passport at a time. Those Indian citizens acquiring citizenship/passport of another country should immediately surrender their Indian Passport to the Indian Embassy/Consulate. 16. If your police status is incomplete or adverse, you will be required to submit a completed PP form. The form is to be submitted in four copies along with photographs pasted on each of the form. The High Commission will call up and inform such individuals separately while processing the passport applications.
