Weekend of Good Shepherd Sunday
The 4th Sunday of Easter
April 17, 2016
Dear members and friends of Faith Lutheran,
Jesus, the Good Shepherd, laid down His life for the sheep, and then took it up again so
that He could continue to feed and care for His sheep. The image of Jesus as our
Shepherd is one of the dearest pictures in Scripture. It reminds us of our helplessness.
But it also reminds us of how safe we really are in the Saviors flock. In our three year
series of readings, the Good Shepherd gospel comes each year from a different part of
John 10, since Jesus developed this picture so thoroughly.
In our reading from the Revelation, we get to see what its like for those who have
already gone on ahead of us to enjoy the glory in heaven. This reading reminds us that
we are in the Great Tribulation, but we are reassured that the Good Shepherd who is
also the Lamb of God will bring us safely there by His blood. Once again, our reading
from Revelation will serve as the text for our sermon: The Lamb at the Center of
the Throne Will Be Their Shepherd.
Our reading from Acts gives us an example of how the Risen Christ is to be proclaimed
to the world. Pauls mission work brings him to Pisidian Antioch. He begins his work, as
always by proclaiming to the Jews in the town how Jesus died for our sins and rose
again. He uses Psalm 2 as his text and shows how Jesus is the one foretold in the Old
Testament.
As youd expect, we will also get to sing the 23rd Psalm and hymns based on it.
Our Lessons and Sermon Text:
Acts 13:1516, 2633
Revelation 7:917
(Sermon Text)
John 10:2230
Psalm 23
