MAE 434 Worksheet on Air and Fuel Induction Name: _Rees Winters___________ 2 points per question; answers must

t be typed on this form. Turn in hardcopy. 1. Why would an air intake manifold designer purposely roughen the internal surface of the manifold? Normally air intake manifolds are smooth to maximize volumetric efficiency. However, if high power is not desired, the manifolds are roughened to promote higher turbulence levels to enhance evaporation and air-fuel mixing. 2. Why do inlet valves close after BDC? Inlet valves close after BDC to ensure even distribution of the air-fuel mixture by inducing maximum turbulence and swirl 3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of multiple inlet valves? Advantages are greater flow at times when valves are only partially open, better overall mixture swirl in cylinder, and lighter individual valves allow higher rev ceiling without valve float. Disadvantages are more moving parts to fail and higher potential for having a sealing cylinder issue 4. Why is the shape of the cam lobe critical to proper engine operation? If the cam lobe did not have the right shape then the intake and exhaust valves would not open at the right time and the engines efficiency would decrease or not run at all. 5. What are the advantages and disadvantages of electronic actuators for inlet valves? Advantages are they are less expensive to operate over time, they inherently fail in place, and actuator positioning is more sti than pneumatic Disadvantages are that electrical energy has the potential to ignite a ammable atmosphere, they are not as easy to precisely position as a pneumatic actuator, and they are more di cult to make fail-open or fail-closed. 6. List at least three methods of variable valve control and describe each. 1. hydraulic-mechanical: system allows for an adjustment in the linkage between the camshaft and valves. 2. dual lobe valves: as engine speed changes, the follower that rides the cam shifts from one lobe to the other, changing valve timing. 3. electronic: (no camshaft) gives essentially infinite variation in timing, but it also allows for changing valve lift and gives much faster opening and closing times than that which can be obtained with a camshaft 7. Why is the volumetric efficiency higher in constant speed engines? They will be able to run at higher speeds and produce more overall power. 8. Why is tuning of the intake manifold important This gets the most air-fuel mixture into the cylinder as possible. 9. Why have 2 or 3 intake valves rather than just one large one if the valve area is the same in either case? With multiple intake valves it allows for better breathing and allows the engine to operate at higher RPMs. 10. What are the main methods of fuel delivery in an SI engine? What method is used in most modern automobiles? Why? Carburetor: mixes air and fuel Direct Injection: fuel injectors inside combustion chamber (this method is used in most modern automobiles because it is a completely dry intake so its a cleaner system). Indirect Injection: fuel injectors outside combustion chamber
