Student Preparedness Program: Conditionally Admitted Students

Implement and support a plan to address the needs of conditionally admitted students and students entering PSU with a GPA lower than 3.0 for fall 2011. Project Working Group Sukhwant Jhaj, Dan Fortmiller, Jackie Balzer, David Burgess, Melissa Trifiletti, and Rowanna Carpenter Project Description Freshmen who enter PSU with high school GPAs below 3.0 made up almost 30% of the fall 2007 and 2008 Freshman Inquiry (FRINQ) cohorts. Compared with students who enter PSU with high school GPAs above 3.0, students with lower high school GPAs experience lower fall-to-fall retention, earn lower college GPAs each term, are less likely to be in good academic standing, and earn fewer credits per term. As such it is important that PSU assist these students throughout their college career in order to ensure successful completion and retention. Key Barriers Students regularly admitted with <3.00 GPAs historically have not been advised any differently from those with higher GPAs though performance has lagged. Conditional admits have not been case managed by their respective majors, often leading to inappropriate academic plans.

Action Items Align PSUs institutional capacity to serve underprepared students. Plan and deploy interventions. Investigate, articulate and suggest alternate admission pathways for students who do not meet PSUs admission standards.

Recommendations and Decisions Conditional admit capacity equal to 5-10% of prior entering freshman class

Working with 2010-11 admitted <3.00 GPA students: Melissa and Dan will facilitate timely referrals to Academic Support Program (ASP) until school/college advising capacity can fulfill case management role while ASP is ultimately eliminated and College Success curriculum merged into Learning Center. Enrollment information will be shared with ASP, Athletics and Diversity & Multicultural Student Services to coordinate shared students. Dan will also design action/communication plans for each category of <3.00 students and work with ARR/UASC and new CRM team on implementation. ARR will continue to share any additional < 3.00 admission/yield data throughout the summer. Sukhwant will coordinate any specific activities for <3.00 FRINQ students. For 2011-12 we are moving forward the following actions items: -Matrix modification: Sukhwant will coordinate the redesign of the admission matrix and articulate an admission process for <3.0 HSGPA students based on performance analysis and retention outcomes. Sukhwant and Jackie will obtain appropriate approvals. -Capacity on conditional admissions: Dan and Jackie will establish the maximum capacity of conditionally admitted (to be defined internally) students before the 11-12 admission cycle begins. In addition, we will institutionalize our collaboration to ensure that all students with GPA below 3.0 and those conditionally admitted have a support plan in place before the school starts. Funding Required None required at this time Timeframe and Metrics Timeframe to be determined Metric Name/Description Under Prepared Student Index: Track the number of students who enter PSU with less than 3.0 HS GPA. Follow those students through their support plans. Under Prepared Student Intervention: Ensure all under prepared students receive some sort of intervention. Student Satisfaction: Ensure students receiving intervention are satisfied with intervention methods. Under Prepared Student Awareness: Are faculty and staff more aware of pertinent issues for under prepared students? Formula Compare levels of under prepared student graduation before and after implementation. Surveys Surveys Surveys
