INTRODUCTION

The aim of the proposed system is to develop a cost effective solution that will provide controlling of home appliances remotely and enable home security against intrusion in the absence of homeowner. The system provides availability due to development of a low cost system. The home appliances control system with an affordable cost was thought to be built that should be mobile providing remote access to the appliances and allowing home security. Though devices connected as home and office appliances consume electrical power. These devices should be controlled as well as turn on /off if required. Most of the times it was done manually. Now it is a necessity to control devices more effectively and efficiently at any time from anywhere. In this system, we are going to develop a cellular phone based home/office appliance . Automation is the need of today. The ultimate aim of technology is to reduce the load of mankind. To reduce the amount of human effort required to perform a task is the objective behind technical development. Dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) signaling is used for telecommunication signaling over analog telephone lines in the voice-frequency band between telephone handsets and other communications devices and the switching center. The version of DTMF used for telephone tone dialing is known by the trademarked term Touch-Tone (canceled March 13, 1984), and is standardized by ITU-T Recommendation . It is also known in the UK as MF4. Other multifrequency systems are used for signaling internal to the telephone network. DTMF, better known as touch-tone, is a system of signal tones used in telecommunications. Applications include voice mail, help desks, telephone banking, etc. There are twelve DTMF signals, each of which is made up of two tones from the following selection: 697 Hz, 770 Hz, 852 Hz, 941 Hz, 1209 Hz, 1336 Hz, 1477Hz. The tones are divided into two groups (low and high), and each DTMF signal uses one from each group. This prevents any harmonics from being misinterpreted as part of the signal.

Below is the description of a project, that is an application to automate the home appliances using the DTMF technology.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION This project aims at developing a DTMF BASED DEVICE CONTROL SYSTEM, which involves the control of the devices connected to the microcontroller by a handset. The phone will transmit a particular frequency corresponding to the key pressed to the decoder section, which will in turn provide a BCD output corresponding to each frequency. In accordance to the output, different devices will be switched on or off.

If key 1 is pressed form the handset, the device1 will be switched on. In case, key 2 is pressed form the handset, the device2 will be switched on. If these keys are pressed again the corresponding devices will be switched off. Same is the case for the key3 and key 4. The other unique feature of this project is the inclusion of a password to allow access to the device automation. To implement that, the person will have to first enter the correct password through the phone and only after that he/she will be allowed to control the devices of the home. Using this project we can control, both the switching on and switching off the devices connected to the microcontroller. In this, gsm modem is used, whenever any device will switch on, then the message will send to authority person. BLOCK DIAGRAM GSM Modem It is a hardware component that allows the capability to send and receive SMS to and from the system. The communication with the system takes place via RS232 serial port. Cell phone can be attached at the place of GSM hardware but it limits the hardware functionality such as sending or receiving of SMS. The DTMF Telephone Controller is ideal for remote control applications around your home, office, shop, or barn. You can remotely control almost any device with this controller project. The DTMF Telephone Controller unit continually monitors your phone line and looks for the proper user touch-tone sequences to remotely control devices around your home or The DTMF controller offers full control from any telephone anywhere in the world! The Telephone remote controller system board utilizes the Dual Tone Multi Frequency Tone (DTMF) encoding or touch-tone dialing technology, which was invented by the Bell System many years ago. When you press a numeric button in the telephone keypad, the keypad starts up two oscillators and generates two tones at the same time. These two tones are taken from a row frequency and a column frequency. The resultant frequency signal is called Dual Tone Multiple Frequency. A DTMF signal is the algebraic sum of two different audio frequencies. Each of the low and high frequency groups comprise four frequencies from the various keys present on the telephone keypad; two different frequencies, one from the high frequency group and another from the low frequency group are used to produce a DTMF signal to represent the pressed key. The DTMF Generation And Decoding DTMF is Short for Dual Tone Multi frequency and the system used by touch-tone telephones. DTMF assigns a specific frequency (consisting of two separate tones) to each key so that it can easily be identified by a microprocessor.

Relay driver is used to isolate both the controlling and controlled device. relay is an electromagnetic device, which consist of solenoid ,moving contacts (switch) and restoring spring and consuming comparitively large amount of power.

FIG. DTMF BASED DEVICE CONTROL SYSTEM

APPLICATIONS Can be used to implement wireless automation. Can be used to automate the device at school, homes, offices, etc. Can be used at almost all the government and non-government organizations.

TOOLS/SOFTWARES /COMPONENTS REQUIRED 1. KEIL Vision2 Software for programming of Microcontroller. 2. C Programmer and Software for the burning of the Microcontroller.
3. Components for designing of the embedded part.

4. Soldering kit. 5. Measuring Instruments (Multi-meter), etc.

Application and Advantage:

1. Can be used in various rooms like seminar hall, conference room, and study rooms in college where the capacity of room is limited and should not be exceeded. So the project will display the actual number of persons inside the room.
2. The other part of the project (password detector) can be used to automate the door

locking process, so the user need not to carry the door lock keys along with him, he can just remember the password and use it later to open the door. 3. Cost effective. 4. Fast and efficient

Future Development:
1. We can monitor and control more parameters and devices. 2. Voice announcement system can be added to indicate device conditions. 3. We can implement other related modules like fire sensor, wind sensor. 4. We can add the module of voice alarm system to indicate that the room is full and persons can not enter inside.
