Sip, Savor and Enjoy BV Wines Responsibly. 2012 BEAULIEU VINEYARD, RUTHERFORD, CA
During a wine tasting at Beaulieu Vineyard, you will not only experience todays great wines, you will also gain an understanding of how the wine business has evolved in the past fifty years and in the fifty years before that. In 1900, Georges and Fernande de Latour visited Rutherford, which Fernande declared a beau lieu, or beautiful place. Georges founded Beaulieu Vineyard in the red dust of Rutherford to create wines as great as, or even greater than, Frances best. BV was able to stay in business during Prohibition by producing sacramental wine for San Franciscos Catholic churches. In 1938, Georges brought Andr Tchelistcheff to the BV team. Known as the Maestro, Andr was arguably the winemaker most responsible for the Napa style made so famous in the 1970s and 1980s. Among many innovations, he introduced cold fermentation for white wines, secondary malolactic fermentation via inoculation for reds and the use of small French oak barrels for aging. He also produced Napas first cult wine, the Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Since that time, BV has continued to innovate. In 2008, a winerywithin-a-winery was created to craft the small-lot reserve bottlings. This strategy, like many others pioneered by BV, has been emulated by a number of other wineries. BV produces a wide range of wines. Besides the Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, the Reserve series offers Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and the Tapestry red blend. The BV Napa flight includes Cabernet Sauvignon and

Chateau St. Jean Winery and Vineyards, with its elegant architecture and European-inspired gardens, is a must-see winery in the Sonoma Valley. The estate is located at the foot of the Sugarloaf Ridge, off of Highway 12 in Kenwood. The Chateau and its exquisite gardens express the beauty and grace that distinguish both the winery and its Sonoma County wines. This awe-inspiring winery welcomes visitors from around the world to sample their wide array of award-winning wines, and enjoy its quaint courtyard with colorful shrubs, generous groundcover, rare palms and citrus trees. Two fountains provide a soothing atmosphere, with the central fountain situated in front of a sculpture of Jean, the winerys namesake. Founded in 1973, Chateau St. Jean has long been recognized as a leader in vineyard designated wines, and later, for the acclaimed Cinq Cpages, an award-winning, Bordeaux-styled blend of five red varietals. Among the 38 vintages produced, Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren, with 30 years of vineyard and winemaking expertise, works diligently to highlight the best of each vineyard in the wines. In celebration of their 20-year vintage anniversary release, their flagship 2009 Cinq Cpages Cabernet Sauvignon is available to customers for $75. The 2009 Cinq Cpages (Five Varieties) is a Bordeaux-style blend, complex and layered. Its deep garnet color meets robust aromas of blackberry, black plum, clove spice and rich mocha notes in the glass. In signature Cinq Cpages form, this wine combines the strength of the varied Sonoma County region to create a well-balanced, complex and powerful wine. For those who have a preference for white wine, Chateau St. Jean prides itself on its 2010 Chardonnay Robert Young Vineyard Alexander Valley for $25. This single-vineyard wine uses Chardonnay fruit from the famous Robert Young Vineyard located in north central Alexander Valley. The 2010 vintage highlights bright aromas of ripe stone fruit, lemon zest and hints of honeysuckle. This delicious wine has a creamy texture with bright acidity and

Napa isnt just one big name after another on Highway 29; most of the grapes made into wine are grown elsewhere, in considerably more bucolic settings. In fact, some wineries, special places far from limos and crowds, do their thing amongst the vines, alongside of the surroundings and not removed. Pope Valley Winery is what these latter places have used as their touchstone for decades, and its still making wines the way it did a century ago. Winding through picturesque fields, undulating vineyards and oakstudded hills, one gets the feeling of being transported back in time heading northeast away from the Silverado Trail. Originally called Locallomes after the Indians who first settled the Valley, the name was changed to Pope Valley after Julian Pope was given a land grant to the area by the Mexican government. After the governor signed it, Julian Pope paid twenty-five cents and Pope Valley became his, semi-isolated but within easy distance to the rest of the wider Napa Valley. The Pope Valley Winery was founded in 1897 as the Burgundy Winery & Olive Factory by Ed Haus. The original farmhouse still graces the property, as well as a blacksmiths workshop, complete with the tools of the trade. The winery itself is housed in an historic building that was designed, before electricity was brought to the site, to utilize the slope of the hill to move the grapes through the process of becoming fine wine. It was fashioned as a three-story gravitational flow winery with a handdug cave (taking, incidentally, nine years to complete without mechanization) to allow the wine to flow from crusher, to press, to barrel. The winerys vineyards include more than eighty acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, Merlot, Sangiovese and Zinfandel.

The Eakle family now runs the winery and produces 5,000 cases of wine a year from estate-grown fruit, with some from vines that are nearly seventy years old. Currently, siblings David Eakle as winemaker and Diana Eakle Hawkins as general manager are making great strides in bringing Pope Valley Winery to the next level of quality, distinction and recognition. Their efforts, along with consulting winemaker Shaun Richardson, have recently paid off at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, where the 2010 Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2010 Merlot Eakle Ranch both took Best in Class, and the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Eakle Ranch and 2010 Sparkling Blanc de Blancs also scored well. In addition, the Eakles also produce bottlings of Sangiovese, Sangiovese Ros, Zinfandel, Zinfandel Port, and a very rare Old Vine Chenin Blanc. The tasting room next to the winery is welcoming and without pretense, offering a number of limited production, wineryonly releases. There are special group or lunch tastings available by appointment, and the winery has picnic grounds, a bocce ball court and a horseshoe pit for guests enjoyment as well as brie and crackers for sale to pair with the wines. Wine flights are complimentary and no appointments are needed for groups under eight. The goal is not just to provide an escape from the rest of the Valley but to actually make you forget there is anywhere else at all. As you can tell, Pope Valley the area and Pope Valley the winery are very much alike: both are the true, authentic Old Napa which so
many people come to in search of. Well, like all good things, it takes a bit of time, a willingness to step away from where everyone is headed, in order to find, but when you do, the results are all you imagined and more. Head up and to the right and go taste for yourself why Pope Valley Winery has been making quite a name for itself by doing things in a time-tested, unpretentious way. Enjoy!
Come and experience the history and pastoral setting with picnic grounds, a bocce court and a horse shoe pit.

The year was 1969. Neil Armstrong took his first steps on the moon; the New York Mets were on their way to their first National League pennant; Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was topping the years box office sales. And an intrepid young Midwesterner, yearning to answer the call of his ancestors, was scouring Napa Valley for the perfect piece of land on which to plant the family flag. Now, on the eve of Jay Corleys 81st birthday, he looks back at his 40+ years in the Napa Valley and looks forward to the next generations taking the reins of the Corley Familys Monticello Vineyards
In 1969, the Stanford-educated Corley was a running a successful publicly traded company in Los Angeles, but wanted to trade his three-piece suit for overalls. After all, Recent Accolades farming was in his blood. Every generation of April 2013 Issue of the Wine Enthusiast: The Next Generation 2009 Corley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon my family for 400 years has been farmers. As - 93 points and "Cellar Selection" a boy, I loved spending time on my Things went well enough those first years 2009 Corley "State Lane" Cabernet Sauvignon grandfathers farm in southern Illinois. I just to make Corley think, we can do this. Soon - 93 points and "Cellar Selection" always wanted to get back to farming. the successful winegrower wanted to build a 2009 "Tietjen Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon At the time, Corleys friend, a wine shop winery. As an graduate student years earlier, - 92 points owner in Los Angeles, was developing a piece Corley had written a thesis on starting up a 2009 Corley "Yewell Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon - 91 points and "Cellar Selection" of property in Yountville. He invited Corley to winery. He opened his desk drawer, dusted off come for a visit, and Corley was hooked. I the old thesis and got started. would come up nearly every weekend for nine months to see what All seven of Corleys children helped out at the winery during their was going on here. I would just roam around, get to know people, high school years. But Corley encouraged them to go off, experience ask questions. There werent many people around, but the ones who the world outside of the winery where they had grown up, and then
were, as Corley ticks off the names of contemporary Napa Valley pioneers, were very helpful. A self-described Burgundy guy with a taste for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Corley was looking for a place where those varieties would thrive. He found it in an 80-acre prune orchard at the southern end of Napa Valley. He liked the propertys proximity to the cooling breezes of the San Pablo Bay and the fact that it sat next to the Napa River. I didnt think of being on Highway 29 to capture visitors, I wanted to be on the river because I knew access to water would be essential. Once the property was cleaned up, Corley didnt cut corners planting the vineyard. We used all of the new technology coming out of Davis. We tested the soil everywhere, and we drilled holes in the ground to see how the water was flowing. Then we planted the vines closer together than most people were doing in those days to stress them.

come back if they wanted. Kevin Corley, now Winegrower and President, became a successful banker in Los Angeles. Stephen Corley, now the winerys Director of Sales and Marketing, was a CPA who worked at the accounting firm KPMG before he came back to the winery in 1997. Chris Corley, the youngest of the three, has worked at the winery the longest. Initially aiming to be a marine biologist, Chris eventually decided he would rather drown in wine than sea water. He worked in the cellar under other winemakers for 13 years before he earned enough stripes to become head winemaker in 2002. Now the three brothers form a harmonious management team. Three of them is better than one of me, says the senior Corley.
honored the third President by naming the winery Monticello Vineyards after Jeffersons mountaintop home in Charlottesville, Virginia. In 1984, the Corleys built the Jefferson House, a very close replica of Monticello, on the Home Ranch that is now used as office space and to entertain guests. The four acres of grounds surrounding the Jefferson House are comprised of the same trees, shrubs and flowers Thomas Jefferson planted at Monticello. In the quaint, rustic tasting room, the staff pours a little bit of everything the Corleys produce from 80 acres of vines on the Home Ranch in the Oak Knoll District as well as four other estate vineyards in Napa Valley. With 30 vintages under their belts, the Corleys like to show off their library wines in reserve tastings in the Jefferson House. Slip into the comfortable black leather chairs and enjoy a flight of Cabernet Sauvignon, some Merlot, or their very popular estate Pinot Noir. People come for our Cabernet Sauvignon, Stephen Corley says, but they leave with Cabernet and Pinot Noir.

Suisun Valley & Vezr Family Wines are appealing to a New Bolder & More confident Wine connoisseur
Todays wine connoisseur has grown up with wine no longer being a sought-after culture, but a sheer household necessity. They no longer depend on adolescent movies in order to determine what wine is politically correct to drink. They are even very skeptical of well-known magazine scores that tend to give better grades to more frequent advertisers and Frenchy wines. The new, bold connoisseurs are far more confident they know exactly what they like and what they dont. These connoisseurs are also looking for something different: different blends, different appellations and more boutique-style wines that are handcrafted and hand pushed, small-lot wines. Suisun Valley is often referred to as The Napa Back Road. Quite surprisingly, The Napa Back Road only takes about 20 minutes from the Highway 121 Napa entrance of the Silverado Trail to The Vezr Family Blue Victorian Winery, just one of 18 wineries in the Suisun appellation. Better yet, there is only one traffic light between Silverado Trail and Suisun Valley. As these new wine connoisseurs become club members of the boutique wineries in lesser-known appellations, they are truly becoming cult-like about their support of their favorite off-the-main-road boutique winery. With this said, club members of all three of the Vezr Family wineries in Suisun Valley are some of the most devoted and
FUN FacT Suisun Valley actually has two appellations (Suisun & Green Valley) and these were established within a year of the first Napa Valley appellations. Also, Suisun was the largest wine producer before Prohibition. Suisun has a long history of wine production and vineyard cultivation.
enthusiastic of all fans and one can easily see why. Vezr Family wines are exceptional, its the only place you can taste and buy $200 quality wines for $45 to $90 a bottle, and every wine is good to exceptional. You will not encounter the all-too-common scenario, where only one out six flights of wine is marginally acceptable to be considered for a mercy bottle. (Definition: When the winery staff is so nice and yet none of the wines appeal to you, you simply buy a bottle to be kind i.e. mercy bottle). At Vezr wineries, this is never the case. In fact, there are more than 20 different wines and ports and all of them are so delicious you have a hard time stopping yourself from buying a bottle of everything you taste. The fact that all of their wines are so good is not by chance. One reason is, of course, the wonderful Suisun Valley which presents one of the worlds top ten growing conditions for fine wines, the other reason is passion, and family passion at its best. The Vezr family name is an ancient Hungarian name of the Chieftains that travelled over the Caspian Plains to Central Europe with Attila the Hun. Needless to say, Hungarian history, since that time, is filled with passion. Hungarians are
often known for living life large and people who have such a driving energy to make dreams into reality. In fact, Napa and California itself owe its wine industry and fine grape varieties to the dreams and vision of one Hungarian 150 years ago with Count Agoston Haraszthy, who brought 300,000 European vines to the Napa Valley and opened the Buena Vista Winery in Sonoma. The Vezr Family, both Hungarian and Portuguese, too push the envelope in winemaking like everything else in their life. They risk their entire harvests every year to bring in the ripest Cabernet and Petite Sirah in both Napa and Suisun Valley. If you love black cherries and ripe plums, you will especially love Vezr Family Vineyard Petite Sirah called La Sallette. You will also find this Vezr passion in the cuisine at The Steakhouse at Mankas. The only steakhouse on the planet operating in a working winery. The Steakhouse at Mankas is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., six days a week: Tuesday through Sunday. Tasting rooms are open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Come to the less travelled, hidden valley that borders its big sister, Napa, and buy a case of Vezr wines to show your friends you have a little bit of Attila the Hun in your cellar. Also, check out the new winery called Galvon in Suisuns other appellation called Green Valley.

WCtW: If you were to visit just one winery, which would you choose and why? AB: I prefer smaller and family-run vineyards, but one winery that I would pick is Copain Wines. The winery is perched on a hill overlooking the serenely beautiful Russian River Valley. The staff is warm, welcoming and extremely knowledgeable. The Les Voisins Pinot Noir and the Les Voisins Syrah are expressive, sophisticated wine blends born from neighboring vineyards in the Anderson Valley and Yorkville Highlands. They are spectacular. WCtW: Where do you send guests that want to learn about wine? AB: Robert Mondavi WCtW: Where would you take friends to learn about and taste organic wines? AB: Definitely Benziger Family Vineyards a great location for a picnic and awesome wines. WCtW: Tell us the best wineries to bring pets. AB: A great winery for that is Bella Vineyards and Wines Caves WCtW: Which winery has your favorite cave tour? AB: Jarvis WCtW: Describe the perfect day in wine country. AB: A perfect day for me would be to head to the Dry Creek Valley, hitting two of my favorite vineyards, Copain Wines and Dutcher Creek, then breaking for lunch at the Dry Creek Store. I would finish the day with another pit stop in the Alexander Valley at Meadlock Ames. WCtW: Which wineries have the best shopping for wine-related items? AB: I like Portalupi in Healdsburg.
WCtW: Describe the perfect day in wine country. CK: Start the day with a hike on the Sonoma
Overlook Trail and then enjoy an amazing treatment at Raindance Spa relax in the outdoor soaking pools in the Spa Garden. By 11 a.m., have your car and driver arrive to take you to some of Sonoma Valleys amazing wineries. Visit Repris Wines, on top of Moon Mountain and enjoy views of the Bay while sipping some fabulous wines! Or, try the family-owned VJB Cellars, where you can also have a little lunch at the charcuterie and then some gelato! Move on to St. Francis, Chateau St. Jean or Loxton! So many from which to choose and all unique! After dinner, you can listen to music at Eric K. James Tasting Room or another venue in our Historic downtown Plaza! WCtW: Who is your favorite new winery or hot spot wine bar/tasting room? CK: Has to be Bean & Bottle! It opened at The Lodge last year and has become a favorite with guests and locals! Full service coffee bar, charcuterie and wine shop. Complimentary wine tasting daily from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The bar features California-specific small-batch spirits for creating unique cocktails. The ambience is more City than small-town, a true gem! WCtW: Tell us the best wineries to bring pets. CK: We are so lucky that so many wineries in Sonoma Valley are pet-friendly! Anaba (great Pinots), Ravenswood (no wimpy wines), Nicholson Ranch (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and views), Imagery (art), BR Cohn (taste olive oil!), and at Kunde you can take your dog with you on a vineyard hike! All offer fine experiences for mans best friend.
Remember: Please sip responsibly! Plan to taste at no more than three wineries based on these recommendations.

Assistant Winemaker, Ana Diogo (with her son Tiago) and Marisa Taylor (with her son Ian)

RUTHeRFORD HILL WINeRY Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 200 Rutherford Hill Road, Rutherford CA (707) 963-1871 | www.rutherfordhill.com
Growing up amongst the vineyards in Sonoma County, Marisa Taylor Huffaker seemed destined to find a career in winemaking. At a young age, she recalls visits to the vineyards to watch her godfather, a vineyard manager, work in the vines. Like most people who grow up in wine country, wine was a typical fixture at her familys dinner table and Marisa developed a deep appreciation for the process of taking the tender grapes from the vine to the glass. Marisa has two degrees from UC Davis; a B.S. in Chemistry and an M.S. in Food Science-Enology and by the age of 25 was making her own wine using Pinot Noir from Carneros. This education provided Marisa with the solid foundation needed to excel as a top-quality artisan winemaker. After graduating, she honed her skills at Piper Sonoma, J Winery, S. Anderson Vineyard, Williams-Selyem and in Rufina, Italy. Today, Marisa is part of a talented winemaking team at Rutherford Hill Winery in Napa. Rutherford Hill Winery is a Terlato Family owned winery and while big Napa Cabs are expected, Merlot is their flagship wine and they continue to showcase this grape in its entire splendor. Marisa says, I appreciate its versatility and lusciousness that cant be found in a Cabernet. Merlot has lots of fruit and is all encompassing of the palate and can pair well with food. Its not intimidating and has such a large range of styles. Marisa starts with around 85 lots of Merlot; about 70% is estate-grown fruit and after tasting and categorizing each, she then goes back and hand selects between five and ten lots to blend for the different club member and retail wines within the Rutherford Hill portfolio. In the near future, she is going to produce specific block or appellation wines to further their distinction as a Merlot-focused winery. In 2000, a new winery within a winery was created for the production of reserve wines. This new state-of-the-art facility gives Marisa some creative options for winemaking. The Terlato family is extremely supportive of this exciting process and has given Marisa and assistant winemaker Ana Diogo a chance to create a blend to

commemorate the dual birth of their sons. Just as unique as their two boys, is the complex nature of the Ian Tiago wine. This wine is a blend of 50% Malbec and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and is sold exclusively at the winery or through the wine club. A distinctive aspect of Rutherford Hill is the extensive hillside cave system. The mile-long caves contain more than 8,000 French and American oak barrels in which all of the winerys harvests are matured. This unique, natural environment enhances the wine aging process and produces wines of consistent and notable character. Rutherford Hill Winery allows you the opportunity to become a winemaker for a day with a special Merlot blending session that takes place every Saturday from 11 am to 1 pm through April of 2013. This unique and fun experience is what brought out The Barefoot Contessa, Ina Garten to Rutherford Hill when she came to Napa to film a segment of her show. Her husband Jeffrey met with Marisa in the Rutherford Hill caves to blend a special bottle of Merlot for Ina and shared it with her at a picnic in Rutherford Hill's estate vineyards high above the winery.

FRANK FAMILY
V I N E Y A R D S
Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 1091 Larkmead Lane, Calistoga CA 94515 (707) 942-0859 | www.frankfamilyvineyards.com
The motto at Frank Family has long been Youll never have better wine ... or a better time, and given that the winery was recently awarded Best Tasting Room in the Napa vs. Sonoma Winery Showdown contest and has won Best Napa Winery for three consecutive years from The San Francisco Chronicle, its clear how much visitors wnjoy the experience at south-of-Calistogas Larkmead Lane. It was Lily Hitchcock Coit herself, one of the most colorful figures of early California, who originated the winerys name after the thousands of wild meadowlarks which inhabited the open fields and filled the air with their melodious warbling, and that embrace of natures bounty is evident in the award-winning wines from the more than 250 vineyard acres under the winerys control in Calistoga, Capell Valley, Carneros and Rutherford. First constructed as Larkmead Winery in 1884, the third oldest in the state, and refinished with native sandstone from the nearby hills in 1906, the building appears on the National Registry of Historical Places and is listed as a Point of Historical Interest in the state of California. Purchased by former Disney executive Rich Frank and his wife Connie in 1992 from Hans Kornell Champagne Cellars, the tasting room was renovated in 2008 and is housed in a 1930s Craftsman home which is open daily, offering oak-shaded picnic grounds and a scenic view. The wines are handcrafted in small quantities and are only sold at the winery and in a handful of select restaurants and retailers. Designed for intimacy, and thus requring appointments for six or more, via cellarpass.com or their website, there is a range of bottlings available to taste, including several sparkling wines made in the French methode champenoise style. Big reds are what the winery is known for, such as the Winston Hill Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Rutherford Sangiovese, all also only available through the tasting room. Additional releases include Chardonnay, Petit Sirah, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, a late harvest Chardonnay and Port. A friendly staff is led by Dennis Zablosky, whose philosophy is simple: I want visitors memories of the winery to be as much about their experience here as the wines they taste. Dennis is always happy to pour tastes of smallproduction bottles or a pre-release. Rich Frank knows just how to make visitors feel welcome: With my background at Disney, I really learned how to create a friendly and unique guest experience, and Ive been able to transfer those skills to Frank Family, as well as turn it into an educational experience for our visitors. We have something very special in our dynamic staff, our wine, and our history. Our tasting room is extremely down-to-earth. We want our guests to feel like theyve discovered something very special and very real, he says. The results speak for themselves: Frank Family Vineyards was awarded Winery of the Year by Connoisseurs Guide to California Wine in its Best of 2012 December issue. Rich Frank sums things up quite nicely: Our goal has always been to build a quality winery that makes outstanding wines at an affordable price point. And that they most certainly do come north of St. Helena and find out why word-of-mouth says this is one of the best of the best in the Valley and the state. Enjoy!

I would guess that all of the wine club members as well as the many visitors to the winery on the Silverado Trail in Napa know one thing for sure about Judds Hill always expect the unexpected. For example, the Judds Hill Valentines Day celebration will not take place on February 14 as you would expect. They decided to make that date even more special by celebrating ten days later on February 24, and calling it their Post Valentines Day Celebration and Pick-Up Party. Crazy? Maybe, but for winemaker Judd Finkelstein (hence the name) and his wife Holly, thats the way they like to do things, and apparently, so do all of their guests. The event runs from noon to 2:30 p.m. with great food, some form of live entertainment, lots of surprises and, of course, massage therapists who will offer neck and shoulder massages. Now, what other winery offers that? The event is free for wine club members and $25 per person for non club members and takes place on the crush pad next to the vineyard. Reservations are recommended by calling the tasting room at (707) 255-2332, and do you really think it is an accident that the phone number and the physical address are somewhat alike? The winery is located at 2332 Silverado Trail in Napa. They are open by appointment only every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Owner Judd Finkelstein was raised in Napa Valley. His college credits include the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Telecommunications at Arizona State where he earned a bachelors degree in television production. If youve been to the Judds Hill website (and if not, you should) then you have already seen some of Judds Wine Booty shows starring Judd and The Pirate. While it seems a little zany, the shows are also interesting and informative. So, whether it be pirates or magic or Hawaiian luaus, or even playing in his Napa Valley ukulele club with The Wine Country Flea Jumpers,
Judd is right at home having a good time. In addition to having a lot of fun, Judd is very serious about his winemaking. He grew up in the wine industry and learned the art of winemaking from his dad, Art. Our idea is that great fruit makes fine wine and we want that fact to show through, says Judd. We use oak subtly, keep the alcohols at moderate levels and blend carefully, among other techniques. We let the grape shine, which results in wonderful wines of true varietal characteristics. And, with names like Magic, Presitdigitation and Burkes Blazing Barbecue Old Vine Zinfandel, among others, you know that Judds Hill is a fun place to sample wine. Give them a call to schedule a tasting appointment or to RSVP for one of their events and experience the magic of this boutique, family-run Napa Valley winery for yourself. Judds Hill is located at 2332 Silverado Trail, Napa, CA 94558 and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by advance appointment. For more information, call (707) 255-2332 or visit the website at www.juddshill.com.

Shakespeare in the Vines will perform selected scenes from Shakespeares most Chef Alejandra Schrader romantic plays and sonnets during dinner. Shakespeare in the Vines is an acting troupe which specializes in the works of William Shakespeare. Following fourteen years of construction, Dario Sattui opened Castello di Amorosa in April of 2007. Situated in the hills above Calistoga, Castello di Amorosa a family-owned business produces world-class wines including popular white and red wines as well as proprietary Italian-inspired blends, including Il Barone, La Castellana and Il Passito. Wines are sold only at the winery. The castle winery was made with brick, wood and iron imported from Europe and combined with over 8,000 tons of local Napa Valley stone. Today, Castello di Amorosa, a popular Napa Valley destination, offers a variety of wine tastings and winery tours in a unique Tuscan castle setting. a covered seating area, all with excellent views of the geyser. The gift shop is stocked with snacks such as ice cream bars, chips and a variety of drinks, or if you want to make it a lunch stop, bring in a picnic lunch from town and a bottle of wine from one of the nearby wineries! Dont miss some of the other interesting features at Old Faithful. Check out the wishing wells that were once used as hot mineral therapy pools. Theres also an informative exhibit area on geyser eruptions and earthquake predictions, as well as a brief history of the town of Calistoga. And best of all, theres a petting zoo with Tennessee Fainting Goats, Jacobs Four Horn Sheep and Guard Llamas. Old Faithful Geyser of California is located at 1299 Tubbs Lane in Calistoga. The gift shop is a great place to find unique Old Faithful and Napa Valley themed souvenirs, including mugs, shot and wine glasses, postcards, T- shirts and sweatshirts in adult and child sizes, hats and visors, keychains, water bottles, pens and much more. Old Faithful is open daily year round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the winter and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the summer. Admission is $14 for adults, $9 for seniors, $6 for kids ages six to 12 and children under age six are free.

If you were to go on one winery tour during your visit to Northern Sonoma Countys wine country, I would highly suggest doing so at Korbel Champagne Cellars. Why? It is one of my personal favorite tours because it is historic (the winery was founded in 1882) - loaded with local and winemaking history, it is relatively short (only about 45 minutes) and the location is gorgeous Korbel is a beautiful old winery, set amongst the towering redwoods and verdant vineyards of the Russian River Valley. Tours are conducted on the hour, starting at 11 a.m. There is also a garden tour during the warmer months of the year. After your tour, stop in to the tasting room and allow Korbels friendly and knowledgeable staff to guide you through a delicious selection of sparkling and still wines. Brandy is also available for sale (but not for tasting, because of licensing restrictions). The tasting room and gift shop is large and airy, with a fireplace adorning the back wall (roaring and toasty-warm when the weather is cold and gray) and long tasting bars spanning each side of the room. Two huge imported antique crystal chandeliers hang overhead - providing sparkly vintage ambiance. It is well stocked with wine-related gifts, such as clothing, books, grape-themed jewelry, pottery and art prints. After you taste some wines, wander outside to the large patio, which surrounds the tasting room and gift shop. It is dotted with wrought iron tables and shaded by majestic redwood trees. Just across the patio is one of the best delicatessens in Sonoma County. Im not kidding their sandwiches, salads and freshly baked goods are amazing! Along with their yummy food and delicious Korbel wines, they also feature four beers from the Russian River Brewing Company (the brew master for the Russian River Brewing Company got his start at Korbel hence the connection) on tap, including the ever-popular Pliny the Elder. There are also a wide variety of take-away condiments and foods available for your shopping pleasure. Korbel Champagne Cellars is the perfect place to learn about winemaking history, relax a while, enjoy some delicious food and wine (or beer) and stock up on wine, gifts and foods to take with you to remind you of what a great time you had during your visit.

Meadowcroft Wines. I dont believe there is a more authentic Mardi Gras celebration in Northern California than what we have done over the past two years, and it just keeps getting better, said Tom Meadowcroft, owner and winemaker of Meadowcroft Wines. When it comes to the food, the music, the parade and the crowning of our King and Queen of Mardi Gras, this is as close to a Louisiana celebration as you can get. The Krewe of Meadowcroft Mardi Gras

artist Loretta Loy-adair at the charles creek Tasting Room & gallery
Charles Creek vineyard
Specializing in high quality Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon (as well as microscopic quantities of a dry Ros of Syrah) from great vineyard sources in Sonoma and Napa, Charles Creek Vineyard produces wines that are fruit driven, food friendly and easily paired with the courses of a meal. The winery tasting room is conveniently situated in a charming 1890s era storefront on the historic Sonoma Plaza. In addition wine tasting and sales, the tasting room also provides space to show the work of local artists. The Charles Creek Vineyard Tasting Room and Gallery, open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., is located at 483 First Street West, on the historic Plaza in downtown Sonoma. For more information, call (707) 935-3848 or email alan@charlescreek.com.
From plein air to still life, local artist Loretta Loy-Adair presents a selection of new and recent paintings at the Charles Creek tasting Room & Gallery. the show will hang from through march 31, 2013.
Loretta is an oil painter, whose initial inspiration came from her family of artists. Having lived in the wine country for more than 23 years, Loretta has found her inspiration and solitude in the Northern California landscape. Although Loretta paints a variety of subjects, her focus has been primarily on painting on location (en plein air) for the past few years. This discipline also compliments her studio painting where she paints still life and portraits. Loretta is most intrigued by alla prima painting, not only because it is challenging, but she feels that the immediacy exposes the true emotion of the artist in making the visual connection. Lorettas works have been sold in prominent galleries in Napa and Sonoma, including the Fairmont Gallery, North Bay Gallery and the Shirley Roberts Gallery. Lorettas works have been juried into several exhibits held by the Marin Society of Artists, Sonomas Salute to the Arts and Plaza Arts Center in Healdsburg. Her work, Trixie The Sebastiani Theater Ticket Taker, was on exhibit at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Arts 2007 Juried Biennial Show and Mustard in the Carneros#2 was juried in to the 2010 Napa Valley Mustard Festival. Loretta is a member of the Oil Painters of America.

Sonoma Plaza, a National Historic Landmark, is originally home to the last of the chain of 21 California missions. Throughout its colorful history including the Bear Flag Revolt where the California state flag was first raised in 1842 the small-town epicenter is now home to some 25 gourmet dining establishments, 40 boutique shops and art galleries as well as 18 unique tasting rooms. A well-known tourist destination, visitors come to Sonoma to experience the idyllic Wine Country lifestyle. Sure, doublewide tractors may grace the two-lane Highway 12, wide-open ranchlands blanket the valley between towns, and wooly sheep keep weeds and grasses minimal in the vineyards. But, no doubt, you will also find countless award-winning wineries and world-class restaurants in Sonoma. Sonoma is all about life, about taste and enjoying each day.
